Category self QD

@PotsdamLamb: They do, but they don't always show up in the QD category. I think the QD isn't recognized because nothing has actually edited the category. Eventually they might appear in the category on their own, I'm not sure. -- Auntof6 (talk) 01:21, 19 February 2024 (UTC)

Category Question

Since you know the most, this was one in which I removed the display title. I did not move it or anything. I’m not quite sure if anything needs to be done but I consider you the expert on categories. I know this entity does more than just animation. Some of the names on the list are not in the show as just animated like Michael Jordon as animated. He’s both, as is Lebron James (both for Space Jam).

Layout question

On an article when a HarvB or sfn is used, it will show up in the references section. I also need to put in the book it is being pulled from. On this article Bill of Rights 1689, for the moment, I put them under the references section as well. How should this be (it does not seem appealing to my eye right now based on they way they are set out. Do you think I should just covert to cite books (it's only 2 books and 3 cites to them)? So looks like when I run into that I need to make the notes section and reorganize what they put down as refs and put the books in the reference section. That would work for me. I don’t think it takes too much. It pretty much will keep us in line with them and simple.

Help

I forgot how to list a quote and ref in a discussion without the reference going to the bottom of the page (I did this at Wikipedia:Requests_for_deletion#Lumbini sal park lumbini sal park) and when you go to the main page, the reference is at the bottom. Depreciated title

Hi. I went through and removed DISPLAYTITLE from all article spaces. Now, everything left in Category:Pages with ignored display titles are user pages. I do not want to touch those pages, but a great majority are not active and have not been for some time. I was wondering if you wanted to take any action on those so that the cat can get cleared out and down to zero. I’ve been able to clear out a few other cats that are error based and I’m working on the lacks free doi one (takes a bit but getting there). @PotsdamLamb: Would you explain why you removed DISPLAYTITLE? As far as I know, it is still needed for some articles (and I see it's still on one where it's needed). I also see one where you removed it, Aelfric of Eynsham, where you could have renamed the page to accomplish what the DISPLAYTITLE was trying to do.

By the way, the word is "deprecated," not "depreciated".

When cleaning out this kind of category, please be thoughtful about what you're doing. Sometimes a thing that is flagged as an error doesn't mean it actually is an error or needs any action. It comes back as ignored (my phone autocorrects so apologies for that). If the display title is ignored then it is useless. I looked at the article you mentioned. There is no difference on the title displayed when I look at the previous version vs the version where it is removed. @PotsdamLamb: It's true that an ignored DISPLAYTITLE is useless. However, that one was trying to display the name with the correct "Æ" character. That didn't work because it didn't match the title, so it was ignored. However, if you think about what it was trying to do, that shows that the article needs to be renamed. Removing the DISPLAYTITLE without fixing that doesn't address the issue.

But moving the page to a name not using standard keys on a keyboard will affect the search for it, will it not? I do not know how to search for that. I would need to copy and paste it or find the alt number to type it in. It could also be a restricted character through the software as well per the template documents on en wiki. I can go through them and try a page redirect based on what was trying to be accomplished with the display title and see what happens. I moved it to Ælfric of Eynsham. Left a redirect in place with the standard keys of Aelfric of Eynsham to direct to the new one. I’ll look at the others and fix them if they indeed need fixing. I’m not sure how to do this one, as I believe I need an admin. Kīlauea is redirected to Kilauea which is backwards. So I can’t move it. Category reporting error

Hi. So on Category:BLPs needing more sources it shows on the right 118 articles needing more sources. When you scroll down just under the 98 subcategories heading it states there are 335 pages needed sources. There are none that are marked with no date (I’ve fixed those based on history). Do you know how to figure out where that number is coming from? For some reason I tend to believe the 335 number is correct based on our articles. And I just looked again. Some articles are dated back to 2012. Should I go through and update them to see if they are current and if not refresh the tag? @PotsdamLamb: I don't know. I never trust the numbers in the sidebars on the right, and I don't know how they're derived. Enwiki's numbers don't look like they match, either, although theirs seem closer.

Possibilities:

• It could be a cache problem.
• The date isn't always specified. I found at least one that doesn't have one.
• There may be more templates assigning these categories than the two listed; maybe those transclusions aren't included in the totals in the sidebar. However, I couldn't find any other templates or any modules that assign the categories.
• Some articles may have the category hard coded, although I don't see any of these, either.

When I said I didn't find any, I only checked the main template name. I didn't look to see if there are any redirects to the templates.

And it gets weirder. According the transclusion count:

• Template:BLP sources is transcluded 340 times
• Template:BLP unsourced is transcluded 900 times (but I don't know how many of them use the section parameter)

I figured out why theirs contains so many compared to ours. They have all articles that have any BLP template on it (i.e. Needs verification, disputed, etc.). I randomly picked out pages from here which shows a ton of articles. So I think the closest we have (as our counter is empty and has no link bancks - maybe delete it or I can trace their populating schema) is Category:Unreferenced_BLPs. So this is only those that are tagged no sources, not any of the other BLP tags. So at this point, I think we are good, but for the link on the start up we may want to change the category to the page with all of them listed and not just the recent ones. I am going to reach out to media wiki tech about why it won't show the earlier ones in the list, as it seems limited. Thanks and sorry about the long chain we have going. Ephebophilia incorrect introduction

Hi, the introduction to the article Ephebophilia, the part that cannot be edited in any way by common users, indicates it as a "paraphilia characterized by sexual attraction to adolescents aged from 15-18". Ephebophilia is not classified as a paraphilia but more of a sexual preference, one of chronophilic kind. Plus, the given range is 15-19, not 15-18. Could you correct it please? I did that due to the time and the difference in what they were doing. A lot of users have warnings, but the template says only, and I felt that the 50 or so pages they were creating before I could get an admin/sysop to block them were worth it instead of using the final warning. The idea was to tell them they will be blocked, whereas the other templates at 1, 2, and 3 say they may be blocked. Template deletion

Hi - Template:Infobox Law enforcement agency is no longer needed. The couple of articles that directed there then to the same but with a lower case law have been changed to go directly to the correct template. That is why I marked this one for QD as it is no longer needed. It’s an empty redirect. I guess the valid reason is housekeeping? Hennessy Carolina

Red link cats

@PotsdamLamb: Special:WantedCategories.

Just keep in mind that, as with all the "wanted" special pages, it just means that it has been used somewhere without being created. It doesn't necessarily mean that it should be created here. A lot of those appear on the list because people have copied from enwiki; it's possible that it's either a category we don't use here on purpose, or that it should have a different name here, or that there's some other reason for not creating it. Roy Van der Veen

This article was created by an account who put it on different wikis of which all deleted them (including here) for it being in another language and being non-notable. The picture they used was also deleted from commons due to copyright. There is no discussion to be had. User was notified of the QD of the article, removed the QD, posted it to the board and then I restored the QD tag and warned them and they acknowledged they cannot delete the QD (by thanking me for warning.) They put the request up on the board as soon as the QD tag was put on without putting wait on it. It was deleted quite a bit later and they made no attempt to fix the article, instead they went on other wikis and tried to save it which was unsuccessful. It's probably best to create the article in your userspace instead of making it a regular article. Furthermore, the deletion request was rejected by the proponent because it is still valid. @Acartonadooopo: That may be true, but it needs to be simplified. There are some complex words and complex sentence structure. An article can be well-written, complete, and have enough references, but here it also needs to be in simple language. @Auntof6 The MDY is not an issue. Many articles have it, so those editing are aware it's an American-based article and use the right date format, which also allows bot's to correctly format it. For the other one, I will remove it. The counts are mostly correct

@PotsdamLamb: You could add North America to it. Some people think that should be under geography stubs anyway, but some don't because there's more to North America than geography. Same is true for other stub types related to places.

Yes, I think it would be OK to do formatting if you don't change any words or context. @PotsdamLamb: Before I do anything with this, was there a consensus to remove the template? The documentation on it says, "This template is blanked out until a time where it is supported here." That implies that it may be supported in the future, and that it can be left so that it will be in place on some articles at that time. It also says not to use it here, but that can be taken to mean not to add it to anything new, not necessarily to remove it where it's already in use. Bots

BTW, I noticed we have a bot that handles disambiguation links and double redirects. We also have a bunch of redundant bots. But this one should help you out a lot.

1. User:RussBot Double redirects and manual disambiguation (Looks like it runs once a week, but I do not see it working or logging on any disambs.

Maybe you can reach out to them and see if they can generate a list for you and put it someplace for you to work on it.

And since I am here, I wanted to inform you of something else WMF is working on to help editors add value added articles to the project.

1. With in the mentee module, they will have tasks to complete that are pretty basic such as references, wikilinking, spelling, grammar.
2. This is the other one they are working on: Edit check. It seems to have some nice features and retainment of editors.

@PotsdamLamb: Thanks, although I'm not looking to do any mass disambiguating at the moment. When I do, I usually do fine with popups or AWB's disambiguation feature because I'm working with only one dab page at a time.

It’s manual. It basically can do one of two things. It can be run via the console for the owner and they can pick the page it should go to or they can get a list created of the page with the possibilities for it. Like I have a script that if an article is not linked to wikidata it searches through all objects looking for where the title is mentioned and then presents me options to select one. If one is available it asks me if I want to make one. Typically I don’t make a new one because if the article is not notable then the object is determined out of scope of the project. There are several things you do when you close an RFD, none of which are the things you did. Although you probably won't like this, it's usually best to let an admin close them.

New category for project

Hi! As you are the master of categories, I wanted to get a recommendation from you for my project, named by Darkfrog24 Total Backlog Annihilation. The only requirements are:

1. Easy for editors to do that do not need complex writing of anything.
2. Does not exceed 100 pages in the category

These requirements are only because the project does not only move slow, but because on the last one, I had many editors participate that are new to SEWP. The category we did was using this special link and we knocked it down to less than 20 from over 300 pages in a couple of days and allowed us to QD a lot of non-sense and such articles. Ok this one is  Done! Some took more work than others. A lot of them were because there was a template that used a date we didn’t have a date for like use Canadian English date January 2013 so my fixes were either change the date to a category we had or if I didn’t have enough to create a category I just removed it. I also discovered some other issues like an IP vandalizing a widely used template that caused a ton of articles to end up in an error cat that caught my attention. Took me an hour to figure out what was calling a non-existent module but I found it and fixed it so that cat is back down to normal levels. If you need anything else, please let me know. @PotsdamLamb: Yes. Otherwise we would be constantly changing dates on maintenance templates. There's no problem having maintenance categories with fewer than 3 entries. @PotsdamLamb: How about Category:Articles with broken file links (currently at 140 entries)? Those are mostly articles brought from enwiki that use files stored on enwiki. Hello - I have figured out how to bring the count down in Category:Pages using infobox television with unknown parameters (1,371 pages). The following parameters were removed from the {{Infobox television}} (see this portion here):

They just got off two back to back blocks. They are that famous Pakistani pushed from England. Mass-moving of pages in a category

Hello, @Auntof6, we have a couple of duplicate categories: Category:Singlechart usages and Category:Single chart usages. Both cats have over 100 pages. @Auntof6, That sounds like a reasonable approach. Most subcats in Singlechart usages are empty. I think it'd be better to redirect those (or possibly delete them) to the corresponding ones in Category:Single chart usages. Categories' names should be consistent with the parent template/Page, here Template:Single chart. We don't restore articles based on the fact that people "loved" them. (How do you know that, anyway?) Please use WP:Deletion review to ask for the restore. The information at the top of that page says that it is for articles that were deleted via RFD, but we have used it for QD'd articles before.

@Editorjummy: It seems to describe what the service is, but not say what makes it notable. It takes more than sources to show notability. It takes saying in the text why the subject is notable, then supporting that with a reliable source. The article also has a large number of sources for such a short article. Usually, one reference per statement is enough.

As for reviewing the sources, I see some that don't seem reliable, but I'm not going to look at them more closely. The service's own website is also used as a source -- that's considered a primary source and is definitely not reliable for most things.

Categories/Wikipedias AI

Hi - i remembered you said your speciality was categories (i still dont really understand them). I'm just saying in this entry that in the edit suggestions tool with the religion category selected, movies keep showing up. I checked the bottom of the page and religion doesn't show up. They are random movies which by the way have a lot of weird-looking intros with countries like 'country 1 country 2 country 3 country 4' and genres like 'genre 1 genre 2 genre 3 genre movie' and also i could see why a christmas movie would show up in the edit suggestions tool

Vandalism and similar articles

Hello! I have stumbled upon the Kurdish pages on this wiki, I have noticed extreme vandalism from both Regionalist Kurds and Nationlist Turks which both constinently change the Kurdish pages to be unreliable, I have tried to fix Iraqi Kurdistan and Kurdistan(state).

Also Kurdistan (state) and Kurdistan are the exact same articles, with Kurdistan (state) being about Kurdistan being a country while it currently isn't independent(the HDI,GDP,Religion etc datas are related to Iraqi Kurdistan, which is only the southern part of the region??) And I suggest for them to be either merged or Kurdistan (state) getting deleted due to its extreme vandalism and unreliability.

Also Kurdistan Region should be merged with Iraqi Kurdistan. They're the exact same thing.

Hi. Thank you for responding to my permissions request. You said I had some issues with writing in simple English. Could I ask for some examples or articles of mine where I used language that was too difficult? This will help me understand my mistakes. @BZPN: Sure. Here are some complex words and phrases that I see in that article:

suspended, ordained, apppointed, consecrated, resignation, left the priesthood, civil ceremony, dispensation

There are different ways these can be resolved:

• If we have an article about the subject, link the word. For example, you could link resignation. You could link "consecrated" to consecration. You could link "civil ceremony" to civil marriage.
• Reword the sentence in simpler terms. For example, instead of "he was ordained a priest" you could say "he became a priest". Instead of "appointed him as the Bishop of Solsona" you could say "made him the Bishop of Solsona." Instead of "left the priesthood" you could say "stopped being a priest."
• Explain the term after using it. For example, add "permission" in parentheses after "special dispensation".

@Ferien: Good question. In the guideline, the intro talks about pages, but the section that talks about the 3-entry requirement talks about articles.

The reason I'm asking is Category:2004 African Cup of Nations squad navigational boxes appeared in Category:Underpopulated categories, which seems to have got to over 140 categories now. @Ferien: As I'm sure you know, though, there are areas where our practice is to make exceptions to the rule. Maintenance categories are one, since there may or may not be maintenance items at any given time. Another is categories for births or deaths in a given year, plus all the higher-level categories needed to support those. Another one I remember is to allow for a complete set of categories where there is a finite set of something and little or no expectation of the set growing; I created Category:Hawaii counties under that idea back when we had only 2 entries for it, just to get a county category for every state. -- Auntof6 (talk) 23:27, 12 August 2024 (UTC)

@Cactusisme: In general, I see that the article is not categorized and has broken references. It looks like it was copied directly from enwiki without any simplification. That can get the article deleted, so you might want to move it to your userspace to work on.

Comments on the lead:

• There are complex words and words that could be changed to make things easier to understand. For example: variety, adapted, supernatural, fantastic, prominent, feature, typically, conquer, unique, influential
• There is complex sentence structure. Most of the sentences could be divided into shorter sentences to make them easier to read and understand.
• It might be helpful to break it into 2 or 3 paragraphs to make it easier for readers.

Comments on the list:

• There are complex words. A few just near the beginning of the list are avaricious, spherical, aspects, aversions. There are many others in the rest of the list.
• Complex and long sentences, as above.

It might help to look at things this way: our target audience is people who don't know English very well. If they come across a long sentence, they have to try to make sense of the whole thing all at once because they can't tell what pieces have to go together. If what they're reading has shorter sentences (which is how sentences are supposed to be here), they can evaluate a smaller piece at a time.

Here's an example. This is the first sentence in the article:

In the Dungeons & Dragons, the word monster refers to a variety of creatures, some adapted from folklore and legends and others created only for the game.

Here's how you could divide it into smaller pieces (with a little simplifying of words as well):

In Dungeons & Dragons, the word monster refers to different kinds of creatures. Some creatures come from folklore and legends. Other creatures were created only for the game.

@Cactusisme: Those are called named references. The kind of broken reference DI describes often happens when an article from enwiki is being adapted for here. If the part where a named reference is defined is removed but it's referred to in the text that's still there, you get this kind of broken reference.

@Cactusisme: I did some work on the article. The main things it needed were simplifying and more categories.

I noticed that you changed the term "the youngest winner in any Olympic sailing class competition" to "the youngest winner in any Olympic sailing competition", but that statement isn't true. As far as I can tell, he never won an Olympic sailing competition; he won a world championship. That is a top-level competition whose winners are likely to go on to the Olympics, but they are not the Olympics themselves. Please be careful when simplifying text from somewhere else. Sometimes it seems like a word can be left out, but doing so can change the meaning to something that is not true.

Speaking of text from somewhere else, it looks like you based the article on the enwiki article. If you did, please see Wikipedia:Transwiki attribution for information on the required step of giving credit to the source.

@MathXplore: That might be a better title, but I would point out to Cactus that matching enwiki is not enough of a reason to change a category name, and ask them why the change would be better. I would also point out that the current title and the proposed title are not the same. The current one is the nationality of the medalist, and the new one is which country they competed for. If I created the page with the same content that you put in it, it would get deleted for the same reason. The article is promotional in tone, doesn't have inline references to support any of the statements in it, and the references aren't even formatted in a way that people can use them. It also uses HTML instead of an infobox, which is not a good way to do it.

@Cactusisme: First, it's taxonomy. :) I updated the box from enwiki, and updated a module, but something still isn't right. I suspect there's a table that needs updating that contains the classification -- you can see that the enwiki one has the usual list (domain, kingdom, etc.), but it doesn't when it's used here.

@Cactusisme@Auntof6 When this happens you just need to create the missing template for each taxon until the errors go away. You can copy (or import) them from English Wikipedia. I copied over the missing templates for Agouti. Batrachoseps (talk) 09:42, 17 September 2024 (UTC)

I suspect the problem was that you only imported the first template and didn't continue importing the subsequent templates that each taxonomy template called. @Cactusisme: Not necessarily. WikiProjects aren't really that big a thing here. The pages belong to the user, even if the user is indeffed. The project could even continue as it has been. Review a Created Simple Wikipedia

Hey! I recently created a Wikipedia Here And I was wondering if you would be available to Review the wikipedia, as it's on the Requested to be Deleted list. I have revised it, I can more but I would like to receive some Intel on how I would be able to so the page doesn't get deleted, Sonny's page was not a promotion wikipedia but an informational, he has plenty of sources to back him up. Infoboxes

Hi. :) Yeah, I've been trying to work on fixing infoboxes so they have up-to-date information, and so on, but then I forget to check to switch them back to the images specifically on the Simple WP articles in question, or to remove the redlinks that I'd accidentally created. Sometimes I will copy and paste them and forget to switch the images back to the ones that are on the Simple WP entry. Remembering to remove the redlinked image codes is something I'm normally good at but it slips my mind occasionally.

Remembering to transfer notes and references over from en.wiki to simple.wiki is something I'm always trying to remind myself to do efficiently - especially when they are grouped named references.

Feel free to jab me again if I do something silly. :D Thank you for not making me feel too embarrassed! It's never my intention to transfer the wrong images over. As long as you're happy with me continuing to update data, that's cool. Bobo. 14:42, 30 September 2024 (UTC)

@Cactusisme: OK. First the good:

• It shows notability by mentioning the Paralympic medal.
• There's an infobox.
• The language seems simple enough.

Now the things that could be improved:

• It's very short, having pretty much the bare minimum needed to show notability. If you could add more detail, that would be good.
• Since the one thing that shows notability is having won the Paralympic medal, there should be a reference for that. Right now, there are references for the birth date and birth place, and those don't show notability. If one of the existing references shows that he won the medal, you could make it a named reference and use it in two places.
• There are more words/terms that could be linked.
• Please add one more blank line before the stub template. That's so that the output from the stub template is visually more separate from what's above.

I would say to add an image, but I don't see one on Commons.

Request for feedback

Hello. I'd like to ask your opinion about Davey2010 before I do anything stupid with this problem. Recently, I paid attention to this user's articles - I noticed that in many places sources for information were missing. For example, on Polish or English Wikipedia, the requirement is to provide the sources of all information - the same is true on Simple Wikipedia (Wikipedia:Verifiability). It appears that user Davey2010 is consciously publishing information without sources, which in theory should not happen. His explanation, however, is that the content is copied from the English Wikipedia and that Simple Wiki is not actually a real encyclopedia. This approach, of course, prevents users from verifying the information contained in these articles. I pointed this out to the user in his discussion, you can see this here.
