Years Of Frustration
For years, SEGA has been attempting to make decent Sonic games in 3D. Earlier 2D Sonic games had 2D-Esque minigames. Their actual 3D games had awkward controls, questionable physics mechanics, bad hit detection, glitches, and nauseating camera perspective. Disastrous games such as Sonic 2006 and Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric proved that reimagining Sonic in 3D does not translate well. On the brighter side, SEGA did their job well. Some of the decent 3D Sonic games were Sonic Adventure, Sonic Colors, Sonic Generations, and Sonic Forces. Critics and even fans themselves still notice the bad 3D games over the decent ones like a sore thumb. Fans are still looking for a proper Sonic game in 3D, while others decided to program their fan games.
Faithful Fan Adaptation
Sonic The Hedgehog 3D takes the same plot of Sonic 3 & Knuckles for the Sega Mega Drive. Dr. Robotnik and Metal Sonic steal the Master Emerald from the floating Angel Island. Its defender Knuckles the Echidna confuses Metal Sonic from the real Sonic. The Angel Island drops to the ocean after the disappearance of the Master Emerald. Sonic the Hedgehog and Miles "Tails" Prower meanwhile were chasing Dr. Robotnik after their last fight. The two landed on an island as their plane ran out fuel. During their journey, they will meet Knuckles and Mighty the Armadillo. The four anthropomorphic heroes decided to team-up and stop Dr. Robotnik’s nefarious plan of world domination. The game comes with 3D environments based from the Sonic 3 & Knuckles stages. It has 8 levels to clear. There are 3D models for the characters, enemies, and objects. The game has high-resolution textures to match up with modern computers. Players can choose Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Mighty. Each hero has different abilities for traversing the world and fighting enemies. Anyone who is skillful can find unlockable contents, Easter eggs, hidden secrets, and special stages. This is similar to the older Sonic games. This game supports different kinds of controller input. It works well with gaming joysticks for more optimal controls.
Going Fast In 3D
Sonic The Hedgehog 3D is a good attempt to show the potential of a decent Sonic game in 3D. It has the same ingenuity of Sonic Adventure despite the dated visuals and sounds. This game also gives Mighty the Armadillo a chance to shine again as one of the main protagonists. Fans can enjoy fast-paced adventures with their favorite anthropomorphic heroes.
