Zulu

Zulu are a hardcore/powerviolence band from Los Angeles, California. The band was conceived by Anaiah Lei in 2019 as a one-man project, with him performing all instrumentals on Zulu's two debut EP's. They have since rounded out their line-up as a five-piece, with Lei taking on vocal duties. The project also signed to Flatspot Records, who re-released the aforementioned EP's, and have just recently dropped the band's stellar debut full-length, A New Tomorrow. Out the gate, this project set itself apart by elevating the confines of hardcore, managing to seamlessly blend ferocious powerviolence bursts alongside soul and reggae influence, whilst interpolating samples from major figures in Black culture. This full-length was one of my most anticipated albums of this year, and it did not disappoint. I say it a lot, but this band is one of the finest in the scene at the moment, both in terms of originality and impact, and I would not advise passing this up. Enjoy.

Closet Witch are a four-piece grindcore/mathcore band from southeast Iowa that formed in 2014. They got their start by releasing a pair of self-recorded EPs, and have since continued with a steady stream of releases, all containing their distinct blend of abrasive, chaotic grind and raw, and visceral energy and emotion. Their sole LP, 2018's self-titled album is a must-listen for fans of the more chaotic side of aggressive music, it's tangibly explosive output from a band that's made a known for themselves being high-impact. They released a full discography as well a few years back (that included everything released up until then), so if you don't want to go through each release, that's your best bet. Enjoy.

Me And Him Call It Us

Me And Him Call It Us were a three-piece (later four-piece) mathcore band from Atlanta, Georgia that formed in 2003 and broke up in 2007. They put out two full-lengths in their initial run, with a decent amount of demos and unreleased material being shared by the band posthumously. On their debut, the band unleashes explosive, charged shrieks of ear-splitting noise, alongside heavy, choking riffs with shots of sharp dissonance, all delivered in unbridled blast-beat chaos and neck-snapping syncopation. With fuel only lasting for short bouts, the album is broken up by ambient, atmospheric interludes that are more impending doom than sweet serenity. The follow-up, Loss, takes the sound founded on their debut and widens their dynamic range, with elements of more "conventional" powerviolence, grindcore, and screamo being apparent in the mix at times. Both projects are definitely worth your time, especially if you're a fan of bands such as The Sawtooth Grin, Ed Gein, or As The Sun Sets. Members of Me And Him Call It Us also went to form some incredible bands, most notably Dead In The Dirt and O'Brother. Enjoy.

Index For Potential Suicide were a five-piece screamo/hardcore/grindcore/noise band from Charleston, South Carolina that formed in 1998 and broke up in 2000. They released an EP, a split, and one full-length, with their entire discography being compiled on a single release in 2005. This band was a total melting pot of extreme music, which confluenced into their unique abrasion. They pull from varied sources including Man Is The Bastard, The Locust, Rorschach, and In/Humanity, with an added element of experimental noise and electronics thrown in the mix, with interludes sounding industrial and cavernous. Highly recommended, enjoy.

Magrudergrind

Magrudergrind are a three-piece grindcore/powerviolence band from Washington, DC that formed in 2002, and later relocated to Brooklyn, New York. They've been a staple extreme music for two decades now, with a plethora of fast-paced, pummelling and intensive material to their name. Think early Napalm Death meets Discharge, for a very brief and surface level reference point. They probably don't need much introduction, as most people familiar with grind have most likely heard this band. If not, you're in for one hell of a ride here. 

From 2003 to 2005 they released a ton of material, which was compiled on Sixty Two Trax of Thrash. I included the individual releases to satisfy the completist in me, but you really only need the compilation. It's solid stuff, though their best material came after it. In particular, their self-titled full-length and II (both produced by Kurt Ballou) are essential. Enjoy.
