Mcscanner scans a network for multicast sources, which are explicitly avoided in typical network scanners such as nmap. It sends PIM Hello and IGMP Queries then listens to network traffic and prints out the source and destination.

A tool to monitor internet hosts` bandwidth usage in a Linux-NAT network. A daemon collects data and clients display them (currently a Java applet with a graph). It automatically detects new hosts and has a nice summary statistic.

NetDash is a network dashboard and intrusion detection system. NetDash passively collects network traffic and then stores key information to be analyzed for unwanted network activity. NetDash captures all traffic passed over the network and stores that traffic in a PCAP file that can be downloaded and analyzed with other tools such as Wireshark. NetDash processes each PCAP file and stores relevant information about each packet captured in a MySQL database. Loaded NetDash plugins display statistical and intrusion detection information on the dashboard and provide email and system notification of identified events.

Peep is a network monitoring tool that represents network information via an audio interface. Network diagnostics are made not only based on single network events but whether the network sounds "normal".

A small perl script that works with the vgetty package to allow you to call a phone number, type in an IP Address using DTMF, and have the system tell you if that site is up or down. Next up is "canned" IP Address support for commonly pinged addresses.
