OptiPNG is a PNG optimizer that recompresses image files to a smaller size, without losing any information. This program also converts external formats (BMP, GIF, PNM and TIFF) to optimized PNG, and performs PNG integrity checks and corrections.

PyramidWorkshop is an image-compression System based upon the scientific work of John Robinson (inventor of BTPC) about image-compression with adaptive linear predictors and is in average more efficient than PNG/JPEG2000.

This is a research project to test GPU (OpenCL) usability for image compression. Jpeg format is chosen because it is relatively simple and I am familiar with it. 2013-01-22: For now only pixel conversion and DCT transform is done with OpenCL, entropy coding is done with CPU in one thread. Unfortunately this implementation is no match for even one threaded SSE2 jpeg encoder, too much data goes through PCIe. Please see: https://www.ghostscript.com JBIG2 is a compression format for lossless and lossy encoding of scanned monochrome documents at moderately high resolution. It is very efficient in that domain, claiming 100:1 compression. jbig2dec is a decoder-only implementation of the format.

Jpegant is a compact JPEG encoder for embedded applications. It is intended to be executed on small microcontrollers or microprocessors. High speed and small memory usage is its main concern. It implements a subset of JPEG standard. Now the code contains JPEG decoder so if you decided to use nonstandard transform or entropy coding in encoder you still will be able to decode bitstream (provided that you keep the decoder in sync of course). Release 1.1 source code and Windows executables are on the download page. For the latest release code look into the repository in 'release-1-0' branch. The SSE2 inplementation is present in 'simd.0' branch in the repository.
