# UPDATED May 2015 # Scroll down to see the update of my Review
OMV brings to you a network attached storage solution for beginners and avanced users.
It has the simplicity, yet is still comprehensive, that is needed for beginners who don't know much about Linux.
It is even easier to install than your Windows. OMV takes care of anything itself. You just need to setup your root password. No more interaction is needed from you to install this Distribution.
After the installion you can start right away with settup up your shares, configuring plugins and services, creating a raid or filesystem on your new hard disk. All that can be easy done via a simple Webinterface.
OMV features a simple Plugin API and comes with a bunch of Plugins developed and maintained by votdev itself. Plugins that are included from the beginning and just need to be installed in the plugin section feature support for clamav (Antivirus), DAAP (itunes media server), netatalk (AppleTalk) and one for USB Backups. There are also some Plugins for Users with needs that go above the usual: LDAP, LVM2, iSCSI Enterprise Target, UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) and one to manipulate the the IP Route table.
Besides that there are already many Plugins made from the community for the Fedaykin (OMV 0.4) version. Available User made Plugins are: autoshutdown, dnsmasq, git, mysql, processlist and transmissionbt. More Plugins, that are not maintained at the moment, but available and working on Fedaykin are: cups, minidlna, openvpn, subversion, virtualbox and a website plugin. Greyhole will be available again in the next OMV version.
The upcoming version Sardaukar (OMV 0.5) will feature a better and redifined Plugin API which will make it even easier for Users to devolop Plugins.
Other new Features that are coming to OMV are Static IPv6 Support (0.5) and dynamic Support in 0.6. Version 0.6 also takes the step to move from Debian Squeeze to the new stable Debian version Wheezy.
Keep in mind that openmediavault just builds up onto a standard minimal Debian installation. So, anything that can run on Debian, will much likely also run on OMV.
## Update ##
Since I wrote this review, many things have changed. OpenMediaVault runs on Debian Wheezy for over a year now with the Version 1.0. The upcoming Version 2.0 will make the jump to the latest Version of the Webframework that's used. A couple of months later we well then see the version 3.0 which will make the jump to Debian Jessie.
New Features in 1.0 for example: Widgets in the Dashboard, there are even more coming with 2.0, more Plugins than ever before - combining core and third party plugins OMV now has over 65 (!) Plugins.
OpenMediaVault is allways enhancing, and it will continue to do so, with its very active community and third party developers.

It works in theory, but in practice it’s really slow. I have it installed on a computer plugged directly into my router’s gigabit ethernet port. We have WiFi AX, but to transfer 300MB of files from my Macbook Pro A1 it says it would take 3 days! I have SSDs on both sides so i cannot imagine why it’s so slow.

Absolutely awesome! By far the best free NAS OS on the planet!

Just switched over from Freenas and I have to say as a non techy home user OMV is so much easier to use and understand, if i can understand and use this anyone can and the guys on the support forums are amongst the most helpful I've ever come across on any support forum A thousand thanks to Volker for this amazing piece of software

This is a great stable, free, and open NAS. The developer is responsive and pushes bugfixes constantly. Installation was a breeze and 3rd party plugin support is great!

I am using commercially avail. 4-bay NAS solutions since years from various brands. The majority of them are ARM/linux based given the better performance/energy/cost ratio compared with Intel ones. All these solutions are fine, but have limited flexibility when it comes to compute intense and special tasks to integrate into the system. My first OMV 4-bay NAS was based on N40 HW and is running since 1.5 years at outstanding stability. Recently I built a most up to date 4-bay OMV NAS based on latest Haswell architecture. The platform is running very stable and is expetect to outperform all commercially avail. NAS systems wrt performance/energy consumption. The next OMV release 0.6 will be based on Debian Wheezy and is intended to reach below 14watt in idle (AC side) with 4x4TB RED hard drives and a boot mSATA SSD. The concept and power figures were proven with latest Ubuntu version. Furthermore I did try other linux based free NAS solutions and concluded that OMV is the way to continue. Special thanx to Volker Theile and the OMV team to make OMV happen and successful.

I spent a long time looking for something that would be just right for a NAS. I have tested most Linux software over the years and was very glad to have found OpenMediaVault. Although very young OpenMediaVault has proved itself as a worthy contender for the NAS market. I, for one, wish them well with this Project! I already have it installed on four computers looking after files in my small computer company here in Sweden. If you are looking for a really easy and well thought out web administered NAS OS - then you won't go far wrong with OpenMediaVault. They have an excellent hard working and aim to please support network at their forum. Good luck and keep up the good work! bookie56

Migrated from Synology, loving the flexibility. Great NAS software, really stable.

Nice NAS software, easy to install and even easier to configure. Saved loads of time setting up the NAS to support several XBMC installations. Thanks to the sweet plugins MYSQL was breeze. Been using this since release and it just keeps getting better.

It took me a while to install it and configure it, but it eventually worked. Still some bugs to deal with. All in all, being Open Source and Free, I'd say it's a good piece of software and it definitely comes with nice potential. Thanks for it!

Been using OMV for a year now and love it. It's stable, reliable and everything we need at work. Useful bunch of plugins, too. Very pleased with the support from the forum, too.

A great NAS distro.

Really nice linux based network attached storage solution.

OMV is awesome. I left FreeNAS because of their limitations in my home and I want something easy to use and just work. (Not tried latest version of FreeNAS but it still looks more hands on than OMV). Alot of plugins have been made available and my life has never been easier :)

Using OMV to build a home NAS with an old Pentium 3 and a Raid 6 of five old mixed disks was great fun! An excellent web UI to ease the task, a good community and a good feedback from the developer to solve issues are the main reasons to try OMV. Also, the fact it's based on Debian makes it very easy to finding information on the Internet to solve issues or tune the system.

I've been running OMV a couple of years now and I've never had any regrets. Along with the plugins it got all the features I need, and then some. A beginner or an intermediate user would have no problem with setting up a NAS using OMV. As an advanced user, used to Debian-style Linux, everything feels familiar and it easy to get even more functionality out of my NAS, by installing additional Debian software. Also, I've posted a couple of times in the forum, to get support and ideas with various things and my experience is that something useful always comes back to the thread creator. Highly recommended.

OMV is what I used, after getting disappointed by Nas4Free. It is way more easy to use. Easy to install and easy to set up. It has agreat community and a decent support in the forum. Works just fine!

Great. Second generation of NAS for Volker. Easy to install, linux architecture, lots of plugins. A programmer Volker Theile and a forum that really helps. - easy to install - easy to use - The best NAS project.

Very easy to use and stable nas distribution for home users. Real alternative for everybody who dont want to buy expensive nas systems (Synology, QNAP, etc.) or want much more flexibility. Also very good support and development and a living community.

Really great. Easy to install, good architecture, lots of plugins (as extensions). And a programmer (and forum) that really helps if there´s a need. - easy to install - easy to use (dosen´t matter if you´re a Mac, *.nix oder Windows user) The best NAS project I´ve seen in the last years.

I decided to move from WHS2011 to an open Source Home Server Solution. After a two weeks of intensive research I came to the conclusion that OMV might be a perfect candidate to fulfill my needs. Even with very very little knowledge of Linux etc. I had a working System within a couple of hours. Installation and configuration is a breeze and almost everything worked like I wanted. The OMV Forum was a helpful place for further information and in my case for active and friendly help when I had some minor trouble with my configuration. An excellent solution - no point for me looking elsewhere.
-
Great NAS solution, I've been a Debian user for several years and this is what I've been waiting for. Good clean design, does what it needs to do and constant development!
-
Great and easy to use NAS system. The standard system is great and it can be extended with plugins built by the community.
-
Thank you for this software. After 6 month evaluation now I have moved my old Freenas machine to OMV. Stable, more opportunities, increasing number of plugins and extensions, and easier to understand also for non Linux professionals. As for Freenas before Volker made an excellent Job.

I previously used both FreeNAS and NAS4Free and I enjoyed them. However, I was looking for a Linux based system instead and finding and using this was perfect for me. The developer and community support is superb and really welcoming. The system itself is very easy to use and familiar and tweakable due to its Debian base. I highly recommend this and eagerly await further development.
