about

The Carpe Sonum issue of mysterious artist Slowly Drifting will make you wonder where the artist has been hiding before making their debut herewith. When ambient music, or what anyone defines as such, enters with the subtle touch of a feather gracing a cheek, taking its time drawing your ears in, nudging your frontal cortex ever so slightly, you can rest easy that you’re in the good graces of a superior craftsmen. So much of A Tremendous River carries the listener on an ever-shifting series of colorful currents and eddies thanks to a seemingly effortless combination of guitar, guitar processing, horizon-melting digital hues, and a formidable mosaic of abundant electronic textures. By the time we get to “Rotherhite”, the mind instantly recalls similar territories mapped out by A Small Good Thing, Coyote Oldman, and Vidna Obmana, charting a course through deep Americana as glimpsed through a decidedly acute electronic prism. What is evoked are the blasted climes of windswept prairies, dustbowl seancés, of times when primordial ghosts are caught unawares below twilit, ashen skies. Once the very act of “Pondering” takes hold, our ears beholding the innovative moves birthed on Eno’s On Land for good measure, it’s quite clear that Slowly Drifting knows how to inaugurate the very notion of deep listening with but a few choice sonic tools at his disposal. Big skies, bequeathing big ideas, with beauteous aural images to boot.

LONDON
2014-2022

A collection of melodies, harmonies and textures recorded over the
last few years. Waves of sound, slowly drifting along.

Recorded at various locations and across a number of years, the
tracks provide a patient pause in a world of busy chaos and movement.

Rotherhithe includes recordings of an old piano in the bottom of
the entrance to the Thames Tunnel Shaft in London. Echoes of piano
chords bounced around the cavernous space.

Boxing Day, recorded on the day that inspires its name, includes
swells of synths created and edited from various sound sources. A
time for reflection, coming up to the end of another year, the track
moves along at a contemplative pace.

Pine Trees is inspired by the atmosphere of David Lynch’s Twin
Peaks–a show which became a lockdown favourite, and helped to capture the energy of the dark winter nights.

Harmony, with a sample from popular philosophical orator Alan Watts,
is one of the oldest tracks on the album. It plants the seeds of a
sound that began many years ago, but continues to this day. The
track layers multiple guitars on top of one another to produce a
vast ocean roar.
