Nope is a common way to say "no" to somebody, typically as a more emphatic alternative. People most often use it verbally in casual situations but may also type it online or in text messages.
For example, your friend may ask you if you want anything to eat or drink, and you reply, "Nope. I ate before I came over." Or, your brother may text you, "u gonna come out to the bar tonight?" to which you reply, "nope. i gotta wake up early in the morning."
Origin of nope
The origins of "nope" are complicated since there are various claims to its origins based on variations in different languages, including Swedish, Spanish, Korean, French, and Italian. These languages all have a version of nope where they add the "p" sound to their version of "no" to add a sense of finality.
In the English language, one of the most common origin stories of nope dates back to at least the 1850s. However, some sources date it back to the 1600s.
