Swamp Eyes is the solo experimental folk project of Evansville-based singer/songwriter, Sam Kuban. At only seventeen months old, Sam's firstborn was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. His latest release, “Something’s in the Hall,” is a direct emotional response to navigating the intense fear surrounding this unforeseen diagnosis and its complications from a parental perspective. This chaotic folk experiment offers the listener a deep-dive into an awe-inspiring binary world of soothing finger-style guitar juxtaposed with spastic blasts of percussive chaos that somehow satisfyingly coexist.

about

This was originally written drunkenly and improvisationally in a dive bar basement. Lyrically, the song is about how we can’t be sure if there’s anything after the life we have now, unless we personally make it happen by giving our loved ones good (or bad) memories to think and talk about. The same biological process happens to every single person in the dirt, and we never know when it's our time to face death. It’s up to us as individuals to make sure we live on in any way we can, if we want to.

lyrics

Dig a hole for the dreamer
Stomp the Reaper's shovel down
Dig a hole for the dreamer
Hungry soul meets hungry ground
As the lungs embrace the soil
Once they tire from the toil
Let his silent future bellow
Through the town

Dig a hole for the sinner
Let the rainfall wash him in
Dig a hole for the sinner
Careless grave for careless skin
As the lungs embrace the soil
Once they tire from the toil
Hear his silent future drowning out the sin

Mother Earth will chew the gristle
Of the good, the bad, the gone
Through fallen trees the wind still whistles
Darkness shudders at the dawn
Every beauty starts in shadow
Every flower from the seed
Now they've started
Digging holes for you and me

When we make our final fall
And hope our time they still recall
The bones in the garden tell it all
The bones in the garden tell it all
