(Review for Deus Ex: Human Revolution - Directors Cut)

This is literally a Wii-U port of Deus Ex: HR with all the paid DLC stitched back into the main game. There is no point in buying this version of the game unless you really want to play TWO extra missions and hack turrets to shoot at the bosses. The original Deus Ex: HR is the definitive version to play because it doesn't have the traversal stutters and broken VFX of the "Director's Cut". Now you don't have to waste 40 hours of your life to find that out like I did. Unfortunately, the original version of the game was delisted when this one released, but you can still purchase keys from third party sites like Loaded (formerly CDkeys).

Surprisingly, I am fan of the cover shooter stealth system in this game. The stealth system is pretty forgiving though, even on the "Give Me Deus Ex" difficulty. You will also eventually unlock an augment that literally turns you invisible, making any tense scenarios and encounters trivial. You can choose to play the game without using the game-breaking augmentations if that's a dealbreaker for you though. I could see a more skilled player than me beating the game and collecting all achievements in less than 10 hours.

The story didn't interest me all that much, the entire game focuses heavily on the negatives and positives of human augmentation as a whole. Those in power love it and want to advance it as quickly as possible despite the obvious negatives, and the working class protest it regardless of the obvious benefits. The game wants me to believe that solution to both extremes is simply nuance. If only the people in power didn't openly abuse augmentation technology to control/harm others through a multitude of malicious means. The "social enhancer" augmentation is basically just mind control, the pimps in Hensha force working girls to get augmented, and companies like Sarif industries mass produce military grade augmentations that will ultimately be used for war.

The actual "Human Revolution" itself feels like the only sensible option to me. If the augmentation technology isn't heavily regulated and is regularly used as a means of control or a weapon of war by the most powerful, it would almost certainly be a net negative for humanity regardless of helping the disabled or improving worker productivity. I am probably just an idiot, but it's interesting to think about at the very least. In conclusion, If you just want tactical-stealth-espionage and don't try to focus too hard on the story it's really enjoyable. 7/10

I first beat this back in my xbox 360 days. But to be honest these older titles not only hold up well, but the gameplay is better than modern titles. And I truly believe that's not just nostalgia talking!

I bought this tonight for less than $2. I mean it's crazy when you think about it. 40 hrs of gameplay for two bucks. You can't beat the price/entertainment value.

Two notes before you install and get angry:

1. I had to use the steam input for the controller to change the controls to a modern input scheme, but this literally took 30 seconds to download a compatible layout for a modern setup and worked like a charm.

2. There was a definite stutter issue on my machine (wondows 11 direct x 11) every 20 seconds or so it would pause for 1/2 a second. This took considerably longer to resolve (about 30 minutes) but I was able to finally fix it with a registry update. I am still playing on win 11, direct x 11 and vsync is on. I was able to play for 2 hrs straight wihtout a single pause. So that issue is ceratinly fixable.

I downloaded a 2k texture pack and the game looks great. My only (somehwat gripe) is I wish there was a way to get updated HD cut scenes. Other than that I am having a great time exploring this awesome retro game (again)!
