The game’s most immediate irritation is VAL, the AI companion. Where the original featured a genuinely witty narrator, this iteration introduces an abrasive, poorly written voice that quickly becomes grating. This tonal misstep extends to the visuals; the art style has been shifted toward a sterilized, "Disneyfied" aesthetic that strips away the gritty personality of the original space station, replacing it with a generic corporate look.

The game's sole redeeming feature is the inclusion of cooperative multiplayer, which offers some fleeting enjoyment if you have a partner to distract from the core design flaws. Ultimately, Spacebase Startopia is a hollow imitation that misses the essence of what made the original great.
