They said I had something once. I remember that much. A spark, they called it. Said the stage would love me, said the lights would make sense of everything rattling around in my head. I believed them too. I practiced in mirrors, in shop windows, on cracked sidewalks like they were Broadway floors. Funny how their voices changed over time. First it was “kid, you’ve got potential,” then it was “maybe next time,” and eventually it was just silence, or worse, that look that says you’re no good before anyone even says the words. But I can still hear the music sometimes, faint but steady, like it’s waiting for me to catch up. Maybe the crowd’s out there somewhere, maybe the curtain’s about to rise and they just forgot to tell me. I pat my pockets like I’ve done a thousand times before and think, where’s my tap shoes? I feel a song coming on.
