Married Into Hell is a visual novel hybrid game that blends together board game, rogue-lite, and auto-battler elements. It's a very simple and straightforward game to pick up and play, but succeeds in creating a strategic and satisfying gameplay loop.

The plot in the game keeps a lighthearted and comedic tone throughout. The basic premise is that the daughter of the ruler of hell, Princess Flow, has runaway from home after her mother promised her away to anyway who could clear her 18 trials through hell. Flow ends up at the estate of the demon noble, Aeolian, and explains her situation to him asking for help. Being the kind soul Aeolin is, he offers to help her with her problem by clearing the trials of Hell himself and making Flow fall in love with him along the way so she does not have to marry a total stranger. And thus you begin to clear the trials along with your other companions, Juliet and Yuyo.

It's a pretty fun story that has a strong rom-com vibe to it. The interactions between all the characters are well done, with lots of cute and endearing moments. The main character Aeolian is especially well done, where despite his demonic ways, always truly cares for his companions.

As for the gameplay it is a pretty simple board game where you take turns rolling two sets of dice. One set of dice will determine how many tiles you move, and the other is a character specific dice with different special effects. You can choose between each of Aeolian's traveling companions for each trial, and each of them will have their own set of dice that focuses on different things. Flow for instance will upgrade her combat power, at the sacrifice of healing power.

As you traverse around the board, the boss will also take their turn and fill the board up with tiles with different effects. Tile effects can range from battles to random events and stores. There is a decent amount of tile variety throughout the game, and new tiles will be gradually introduced as you get further, but I do think there is a bit of a lack of interesting event tiles.

As for combat in the game, it is an auto-battler where you and the enemy will both automatically attack each other at regular intervals. The game mostly plays itself here but there is a bit of strategy involved with the inclusion of equipment. The equipment randomly rolls different stats and rarities, with higher rarity gear having more stat slots. In addition to the rarity the equipment will also have a level, with higher level gear rolling higher stat values. Choosing synergistic gear is a large part of the strategy involved in the game, and it can be very satisfying to get a strong combination of effects. Despite the game being a board game auto-battler, there is quite a bit of thinking and decision making involved, but ultimately there is some luck involved as well. I think If you like auto-battlers or board games, then you’ll probably have a blast, but those looking for something more active or actiony may find themselves wanting more.

Thankfully though, the game does have a bit more to offer which may win you over, through the real content of this game, the H-content. H scenes typically occur every few levels and at each boss battle. Scenes are primarily composed of progressive static CG images, but a few scenes are animated as well. The art is highly detailed, and the scenes that are composed of static CGs do have a good number to make the scene feel more alive.

Overall, Married Into Hell successfully blends together multiple genres in a unique and creative way. The story is cute and charming, with easily likeable characters and humorous dialogue. The gameplay is simple and easy to pick up, with a surprising amount of strategy and thoughtfulness to it. A bit of luck is required as well, but the game succeeds in delivering the satisfactory jack-pot hit feeling one looks for when playing a rogue-lite. The only warning I would give is to people who are looking for a more action-based game, but I do think the H-content delivers enough for it to be worth checking out even for those who may not normally be the target audience.
