The new Gemini for Home voice assistant gives you a more natural and helpful way to control your home, get information, and get things done.

Availability and early access

Early access to the Gemini for Home voice assistant started rolling out on Google speakers and displays on October 28, 2025 beginning in the United States in English and will be released to more Google Home users over time. You’ll be notified when it's available to you, or you can request early access.

Once you switch to Gemini for Home voice assistant:

  • It’ll be immediately available to everyone in your home.
  • Compatible devices in your home and devices you add to your home later always use Gemini for Home voice assistant instead of Google Assistant. 
  • If a device in your home isn't compatible now but becomes compatible later, it will automatically switch to Gemini for Home voice assistant. 
  • Once you switch your home to Gemini for Home voice assistant, it can't switch back to Google Assistant.

Access to basic features of the Gemini for Home voice assistant is available at no cost. These include smart home controls, media search and playback, alarms and timers, calendars, notes, lists, and reminders. You can also ask Gemini questions on a wide range of topics.

Some features like Gemini Live are available on compatible devices with a Google Home Premium subscription.

Request early access to Gemini for Home voice assistant

Early access for Gemini for Home is different from the Public Preview for the Google Home app. Join early access to be among the first to get an invite to upgrade your assistant to Gemini for Home. You’ll be notified when Gemini for Home features are available for your home.

Before you join, confirm your Google Groups settings to ensure you can sign up for early access. To do this:

  1. Sign into Google Groups.
  2. Tap Settings and then Global settings.
  3. Confirm "Add me to their groups" is checked.
  4. Tap Save.

Make sure you’re using the latest version of the Google Home app, then:

  1. Open the Google Home app .
  2. At the top right, tap your Profile picture or Initial.
  3. Tap Home settings  and then Early Access.

Compatible speakers and displays

The complete Gemini for Home voice assistant will be coming to these speakers and displays:

  • Google Nest Hub (2nd gen)
  • Google Nest Audio
  • Google Nest Mini (2nd gen)
  • Google Nest Hub Max

Older speaker and display devices will support most Gemini for Home features, but not Gemini Live:

  • Google Nest Wifi point
  • Google Nest Hub (1st gen)

Gemini for Home voices

Your voice assistant comes with a range of new, more natural-sounding voices. To pick the voice for your home:

  1. Open the Google Home app .
  2. At the top right, tap your Profile picture or Initial.
  3. Tap Home settings  and then Gemini for Home voice assistant and then Voice selection.

This voice selection applies to your home’s speakers and displays for everyone in the home.

Media search and discovery
With the media search and discovery feature, you can search for a song without knowing the title or the artist. Describe any part of the song and your voice assistant will find it for you.
To do this: Say "Hey Google," then:
Request a song

“Play that song that goes [lyrics].”

“Play the song from [movie] where [scene in the movie].”

“Can you play the acoustic version of [song]?”

Discover songs and listen to them

“What are some popular country songs of this summer? Can you play the second one?”

“What are the 3 best songs by [artist]? Hey Google, play the first one.”

Request an album

“Play the album of the year from the [award show].”

“Can you play the album from [movie].”

“What’s the recent album from [artist name]? Hey Google, play it.”

Request information about a song or artist playing

“When was [song] released?”

Learn with Gemini for Home

You can ask Gemini about complex concepts, brainstorm ideas, or get advice and troubleshooting tips. This includes the basics such as time, weather, local information, and more.

Say, “Hey, Google,” then:

  • “Can you help explain why the sky is blue to a 5 year old?”
  • “Suggest fun activities for a backyard party for adults.”
  • “My dishwasher isn’t draining. What might be wrong?”
  • “I want to go for a bike ride this weekend, which day looks good?”
Cook with Gemini for Home

Gemini is your helper in the kitchen. Find out how to whip up quick meals, look for recipes, or even make something from whatever’s in your fridge. Get on top of meal planning and preparation with smarter shopping lists and improved timers.

Say, “Hey, Google,” then:

  • “What can I cook with just bread, tomatoes, and cheese?”
  • “Add the ingredients to make an authentic vegetarian Pad Thai to my shopping list.”
  • “Set a 20-minute timer called “Rice” and a 25-minute timer called “Chicken.”
  • “What can I substitute for vanilla in my cake recipe?”
Household coordination

Keep your home organized and on track. Create and edit reminders, calendar events, notes, and lists just by talking naturally.

Say, “Hey, Google,” then:

  • “Add a dentist appointment to my calendar for next Monday at 2 PM.”
  • “Remind me to make a brunch reservation one month before Mother’s Day.”

Gemini Live

Important: This feature requires Google Home Premium.

Say “Hey Google, let’s chat” to have an in-depth discussion with Gemini. As long as the Gemini Live session is active, you can ask follow-up questions or interrupt, just like in a normal conversation. Get help on what to make for dinner, discuss current events, get advice, learn a new skill, or just be creative and have fun.

  • “Hey Google, let’s chat.”
  • “Hey Google, let’s chat about what to make for dinner.”
  • “Hey Google, let’s chat about the latest news on space exploration.”
  • “Hey Google, let’s chat. I want to create a bedtime story for my daughter.”

Tip: If you’ve set an alarm or timer, your chat may be interrupted. Say “Hey Google, let’s chat” to start Live Mode.

Search video history

Important:

  • This feature requires the Advanced plan of Google Home Premium, and one or more Nest Cameras with the "Event descriptions" feature enabled.
  • Household managers can choose to restrict access to searching video history to voice matched users. They can also choose to make it available to non-voice matched users, including guests and kids.

Use your voice to search your camera history to find out about something that went on in your home. Get a spoken summary of events, and on smart displays you can also view associated camera clips. You’re also able to ask questions about your camera’s footage.

Say, “Hey, Google,” then:

  • “Were any packages delivered?”
  • “What happened in my home today?”
  • “Hey Google, catch me up on what happened at home today.”
  • “When did the dog go outside?”

Set up Gemini for Home voice assistant

You’ll receive a notification from the Google Home app with the message “Introducing Gemini for Home” once the upgrade to Gemini for Home is available for your home. Tap on the notification to be directed to the Google Home app, then tap Get started and follow the prompts. During this process, you’ll be able to set up your voice assistant. If you close this notification, you can also follow these steps.

  1. Open the Google Home app .
  2. At the top right, tap your Profile picture or Initial.
  3. Tap Home settings .
  4. If you were invited, a banner should appear “Set up Gemini for Home for more natural conversations.” Tap Get started and follow the prompts to learn what you can do with Gemini, upgrade to Gemini for Home, and Acknowledge disclosures. During this process, you’ll be able to set up your voice assistant and response filtering.

Change Gemini for Home voice assistant settings

Your voice assistant offers a variety of settings you can customize to suit your preferences. Check which of the settings you want to change in the Google Home app.

  1. Open the Google Home app .
  2. At the top right, tap your Profile picture or Initial.
  3. Tap Home settings  and then Gemini for Home voice assistant.

Tip: You might need to scroll to find the specific setting you’re looking for.

Speech & conversation
Voice selection and Language lets you choose the voice and language for your Gemini for Home voice assistant. You can tap “Hey Google” sensitivity to adjust how it responds to “Hey, Google.”
Personalization
Tap Voice Match, Face Match, and Personal Results to check which devices have them turned on.
Activity, data, & access

To review your Gemini for Home activity, such as commands and questions you’ve asked, go to Home History.

In “Data & access,” you can set additional controls for the assistant and choose to enable or disable some features. Enable Conversation across devices to chat with your voice assistant as you move throughout your home. Turn on Video history for displays to see search results based on your camera history or keep it off and hear audio results.

Gemini for Home response filtering lets you choose a content filter for voice responses to limit who can access sensitive topics. The default is to filter responses for guests, but you can choose to filter responses for everyone or turn off the filter for all. Voice-matched kids always receive the filtered experience.

With Parental controls, you can control voice assistant results for children.
Linked services
You can access settings to services that you have. Tap Calendar, Communication, Home control, Media, Notes & lists, Photos, or Tasks to check which services are connected to each one.
