You can collaborate with Gemini in Canvas to create or edit a doc, app, slides, or code. You can also turn your creation into an Audio Overview, quiz, or other format.
Important: To use this feature, you must be signed in to Gemini Apps. Learn how to sign in to Gemini Apps.
Start a new chat with Canvas
- Go to gemini.google.com.
- Below the text box at the bottom, click Canvas
.
- In the text box, enter your prompt.
- Tip: To have Gemini use a specific format or document type, like a slide deck, include this instruction in your prompt. Check examples for Canvas prompts.
- Optional: To upload files or an image with your prompt, click Add files

- Click Submit

What you can do with apps in Canvas
Edit apps & code
You can use the prompt text box to ask Gemini to make updates to your app or directly edit the code. Changes in Canvas are auto-saved.
Open the code & find errors, logs, and recent changes- To open and edit the code, at the top right of the Canvas panel, click Code. You can edit the code directly in the Code view.
- To find errors and logs from the preview, at the top right of the Canvas panel, click Show console

- To find recent changes in the code, at the top right of the Canvas panel, click Code

- Open the chat with the app you want to edit.
- At the bottom right of the Canvas panel, click Select & ask
.
- Use the cursor to select the section that you want to edit.
- In the text box, enter a prompt for how you want the text to be updated.
- Press Enter.
Important: To add AI to your app, you must be signed in to Gemini Apps and be 18 or over.
You can add Gemini-powered features to your app, like text and image generation.
- Open the chat with the app you want to edit.
- At the bottom right of the Canvas panel, click Add Gemini features
.
- In the chat on the left, Gemini will provide an overview of what AI feature was added to the app. You can respond in the text box and ask Gemini to make additional changes.
What you can do with docs in Canvas
Edit docs in Canvas
In the Canvas space, you can directly edit the text or ask Gemini to help you in the prompt box. Changes are auto-saved.
Ask Gemini to help edit selections- Open the chat you want to edit.
- In the Canvas panel, use the cursor to select the text that you want to edit.
- In the text box, enter a prompt for what you want updated.
- Press Enter.
Tip: Once you select the text you want to edit, you can also click Suggest edits to have Gemini recommend changes.
- Open the chat you want to edit.
- In the Canvas panel on the right, choose how you want to change it:
- To adjust the length of text: Click Change length
and select your desired length.
- To adjust the tone of text: Click Change tone
and select how casual or formal you want it to be.
- To adjust the length of text: Click Change length
- Open the chat you want to edit.
- In the Canvas panel, use the cursor to select the text that you want to edit.
- At the top, use the toolbar to edit your text. You can:
- Stylize headings
- Bold text

- Create bulleted lists

- Create numbered lists

Tips:
- If you can’t find the full toolbar, click More

- To view your saved versions, at the top, click Previous Version
or Next Version

LaTeX is a document preparation system widely used in academic, scientific, and technical fields to create high-quality documents with complex formatting, such as mathematical equations, tables, and multi-column layouts.
- To add LaTeX to any doc in Canvas:
- Open the chat with the doc you want to edit.
- At the top right of the Canvas panel, click Create.
- To select LaTeX, click LaTeX
.
- Click on the formula within Canvas
Exporting or sharing docs including LaTeX
You can export a doc that includes LaTeX as a PDF with the ability to preview before you download it.
You can also copy any Gemini response that includes LaTeX and it will include the unrendered LaTeX code.
Create something based on a Canvas doc
Important: For now, this feature isn’t available to users under 18.
- Open the chat with the doc you want to edit.
- On the top right of the Canvas panel, click Create.
- Select what you want to create:
- To create a slide show, custom visual or app, in the text box, enter a prompt that describes what you want to turn your report or doc into.
- To generate an Audio Overview, click Audio Overview

- To create and take a quiz, click Quiz

- To generate an infographic, click Infographic

- To create a web page, click Web page

Share, copy & export from Canvas
Important: If you are signed in to a work or school account, you can’t share links to Canvas content. You can copy the contents.
Share an app or content from Canvas- Open the chat with the doc you want to share.
- At the top right of the Canvas panel, click Share & export

- If you are sharing an app, review the app info.
- Choose how you want to share:
- To share the link: At the top, next to the
g.co/gemini/sharelink, click Copy link. Then paste it where you want to share, like in a messaging app, an email draft, or a forum thread.
- To share on an available social platform: At the bottom, click the social platform and follow the on-screen instructions.
- To share the link: At the top, next to the
Review app info
When you create a shareable public link for your app, you’ll be able to review info about your app. Anyone with that public link can view and edit data associated with the app. You can ask Gemini to make changes and Gemini will apply updates to your app’s code.
- Share data between users.
- Use Gemini-powered features. For example, if you want your app to use AI to generate text and images.
- Save data across sessions and devices. For example, if you create an app to track something over time.
- On your computer, open the chat with the Canvas content or app you want to copy or export.
- At the top right of the Canvas panel, click Share & export
.
- Choose if you want to export or copy the content:
- To open text in a new Google Doc: Click Export to Docs.
- To open slides in Google Slides: Click Export to Slides. You can also choose to export slides as a PDF.
- To copy the text: Click Copy contents
.
- Open the chat with the app you want to copy or export.
- At the top of the Canvas panel, click More
.
- Choose what you want to do:
- To copy the code: Click Copy code
.
- To open Python code in Colab: Click Export to Colab.
- To copy the code: Click Copy code
Copy & edit shared Canvas content
Important:
- For now, this feature isn’t available to users under 18.
- Shared links only open in gemini.google.com. You can’t open shared Canvas content in the Gemini mobile app.
When you open a public link to someone else’s shared Canvas content, you can make a copy and continue editing it with Canvas on your own. If your Keep Activity setting is on, the shared Canvas content will be stored in your Gemini Apps Activity. Learn how to manage and delete your Gemini Apps activity.
- Click the public link.
- At the bottom, click Copy Canvas.
