Make & receive phone calls

You can make phone calls from the Phone app and other apps or widgets that show your contacts.

To make a call, you can tap any phone number you find on your device. In Google Chrome, to copy the number to your keypad, tap underlined phone numbers.

If you don't have the Phone app, download it from the Play Store.

  • If you're unable to download the Phone app, your device might not be supported.
  • Once you've downloaded the app, follow the prompts to set it as the default phone app.

Important: To use the Phone app, you must accept the prompt to set it as your default.
  1. On your device, open the Phone app .
  2. Pick who to call:
    • To call someone you recently spoke with on the phone:
      1. On the Home tab , next to the number tap Call .
    • To call a contact saved to Favorites:
      1. On the Home tab , under "Favorites," scroll to find the contact.
      2. Tap the number.
      3. Tap Call .
    • To enter a number:
      1. Tap Keypad .
      2. Enter the number.
      3. Tap Call .
    • To select a saved contact:
      1. At the top left, tap Menu and then Contacts .
      2. At the top, under “Favorites,” find the rest of your contacts listed alphabetically.
      3. Select the contact you want to call.
      4. Tap Call .
  3. When you’re done with the call, tap End call .

Tip: With some supported carriers and devices, you can also make video calls, video conference calls, or RTT calls. Learn how to make video calls or RTT calls.

Answer or reject a phone call

When you get a call, the caller’s number, contact name, or caller ID info shows on screen. When a carrier can verify that this call isn’t spoofed, above the caller's name or number, it shows Verified . While most carriers support this, Verizon doesn't. The specific wording and icon may vary.

  • To answer the call, swipe right when your phone is locked, or tap Answer.
  • To reject the call, swipe left when your phone is locked, or tap Dismiss.
    • Rejected callers can leave a message if you use:
      • Voicemail service with your carrier.
      • Take a Message feature by Google.
  • To reject the call and send a text message to the caller, tap Message New message.
  • To have Call Assist answer the call instead of you, tap Screen call or Urgent?.

Tips:

  • If you answer a call while on another one, you place your current call on hold. If you use the Quick phrases feature on Pixel, you can answer, decline or silence your calls with your voice. Learn how to complete tasks without "Hey, Google".
    • To turn the feature on: Go to your device’s Settings, then search for Quick replies, and then turn on Incoming calls.
    • To use this feature: Say “Answer,” “Decline,” or “Silence” when you receive the phone call.
      • On the incoming call screen, you can find a “Say Answer” dialog. This indicates that the feature is working.

Use phone call options

While a call is open:
  • To bring up the keypad, tap Keypad .
  • To switch among the earpiece, speakerphone, or any connected Bluetooth headset, tap Speaker .
  • To mute or un-mute your microphone, tap Mute .
  • To pause a conversation without hanging up, tap Hold . To pick up the call again, tap Hold again.
    Tip: This function is only available for customers who subscribe to the catch phone service option. Otherwise, you'll find an error message on the screen.
  • To switch between current calls, tap Switch . Others are put on hold.
  • To merge current calls into one conference call, tap Call merge .
  • To minimize the call, go to the Home screen. Learn how to get around on your phone.
    • To move the call bubble, drag it.
    • To hide the call bubble, drag it down to "Hide" at the bottom of the screen.
  • With some carriers and devices, to:
    • Switch to a video call: Tap Video call Video call.
    • Transfer an active call to another number:
      1. In an active call, tap Add Call .
      2. Enter a phone number.
      3. Tap Call .
      4. After the call connects, tap Transfer . Your call transfers to the number you entered in step 2.
