Quite common in Taman Melawati, they go in a small flock of 5-10 birds to feed on grass seeds which form their main diet.     The young bird lacks the scaly markings

An individual from a flock of Scaly-Breasted Munias  (Lonchura punctulata ) feeding in the bushes nearby a stream. She stopped on the fence to rest and preen.

Feeding White-Headed Munias

Still managed to squeeze in about one hour of birding after all the house chores and queueing for the Record Book at my youngest son’s primary school. Eventhough it was a short trip the results were more than satisfying.

Observed a flock of White-Headed Munias (Longchura maja) consisting of 3 adults and 3 juveniles flying around in search of a good place to feed. A strange thing happened when the 3 juveniles started chasing one of the adult birds onto a Durian tree asking to be fed. Judging by their size I would have thought that the juveniles were able to feed for themselves. Just before I left I actually saw the 3 juveniles pecking the grass seeds and feeding on their own (photo  bottom left). Anak-anak manja!

MUNIAS- all for one, one for all

Near the Goat shed was a small stream with beautiful clear water flowing down from the hill. A flock of Munias were cooling themselves near the water’s edge. They were Scaly-Breasted Munias and White-Rumped Munias The Black-Headed Munias which I normally observed hanging out with this bunch were absent. I haven’t had much success in getting good photos of Munias but this time round the Munias were not on edge probably because of the water. In the searing heat, I managed to get close enough for some decent shots.

	Looking out for any signs of danger. It’s OK, just a wierd looking character holding a wierd looking light-emitting contraption!
