28mm ECW Royalist: Lord Carnarvon's Horse

 The third and last unit on the Royalist right flank. This is the first time I have painted a plastic regiment from Warlord Games and they are decent. The previously seen two regiments were metals from 1^st Corps, which cost GBP36 each, and this one was GBP25

so a savings of GBP11 per regiment. But when you factor in postage from the UK to France the Warlord Games work out cheaper again as they seem to post from within Europe and avoid customs duties. But. on the other hand, the plastics need time to build.

I think for the other cavalry Brigade (and the commanded foot) I will probably use Warlord Games but for the infantry and artillery I will certainly continue with 1^st Corps.

The Cavalry Brigade commander (of the right wing) is Thomas Wentworth, 1^st Earl of Cleveland, who had a good reputation in that role. The figure is Gustavus Adolphus from Warlord Games and I like the pose although I have had to slightly alter the horse pose as it's clearly jumping a hedge.

28mm ECW Royalist: Queen's Lifeguard Regiment of Foot.

 The fourth foot regiment so far completed out of a planned five for the Royalists. I will complete another horse regiment before I return in August to other projects.

28mm ECW Royalist: C-in-C Prince Maurice (Moritz Pfalzgraf von der Pfalz)

 

This is my three figure command base for the Royalist army. Maurice is an interesting chap and in many ways more charismatic, although less flamboyant, than his elder brother Prince Rupert. He also had a number of independent commands suitable for this small early-war army of 5,000.

Two of the figures are from 1^st Corps and the third from Avanpost which I bought many years ago before the war. The BCW Project has an excellent biography of him here:

28mm ECW Royalist: Foot regiment of Henry Tillier.

 This is the third foot regiment of my first Royalist battalia, the front line, and the only one I know of with it's own Facebook page. Apparently green was a colour associated with this regiment and the gyronny system was used on it's flags. Beyond that, the rest is my conjecture. Figures by 1^st corps and flags from Flags of War. All that is left to do for this brigade is a general and two light guns.

28mm ECW Royalist: Foot regiment of Sir Gilbert Talbot

 Back in May 2024 I showed you the first of the foot regiments and that was the 'blue' regiment of John Belasyse. Here is the second and it is the yellow regiment of Sir Gilbert Talbot. I really like these 1^st Corps figures, not just because 'unit deals' are well priced. The third unit of this battalia will be Henry Tillier's and that will follow soon.

I have always got to paint both sides (one of the problems of living in rural France) so I will follow my normal rule of 12/12 or about 12 units for each side to finish the armies. Flags are from Flags of War.

28mm ECW Royalist: Horse regiment of Prince Maurice

Again here we have figures from 1st Corps as mentioned previously. I decided to do a horse regiment belonging to Prince Maurice as, although he is less dashing that his more famous brother Prince Rupert, he may well have been a more able general. He also had an independent command at times. I'm not sure if I will continue this project in 28mm or not.

28mm ECW Royalist: Foot regiment of John Belasyse, 1st Baron Belasyse

 

I am not sure why I got drawn into ECW in 28mm, given that I am currently on a long run with Epic scale, but I was curious about the figures from 1st Corps and wanted to look at them. I bought a foot regiment and one of horse too. Here is the foot regiment – a 'blue' Royalist one.

Belasyse was a rich man who raised six regiments of horse and foot soldiers at his own expense. He was a catholic who married three times and fathered six daughters. He lived through the reigns of both Charles's and James and died in 1689. He looks very splendid in his portrait dated 1636.
