Hey You

 

Brighton's Higher Love Records are always good for surprises. This time with a new interpretation of a forgotten song by a band from the C-86 generation. 14 Iced Bears are from Bristol and lead by Robert Sekula and played an jangly indie-pop and got known by their love ballad Hey Fever they recorded on a Peel-show.

Now Kent's Puerta Montt City Orchestra, the project of Angus Murray and Tim Salter, recruited the original singer Robert Sekula to reorganize this song and transfer it as Hey You. The result is a song that could be from many albums by Spacemen 3, Spiritualized or Velvet Underground. Strung-out backwards guitar and sitar strains accompanying the fragile breathless ballad. 

And as if that wasn't enough, Jesse Fahnestock remixed the song and spiced it up with handclaps and synthesizers. 

Pass A Wish

 

At the end of August Brazilian DJ Eduardo Ramos, the brainchild behind his project Pandit Pam Pam, released Pass A Wish including a remix by Jezebell. Jesse Fahnestock took the Brazilian vibe and added organs and a hypnotic and mystery groove to this song. Sounds a bit like African tribes but it works very well. 

Spring Calling

 

It is spring and it seems a lot of bands are going to release new stuff. So did Jezebell/Jesse Fahnestock who released Jezebellearic Beats Vol. 1 a 20 track compilation and as the title suggest there are variations of Balearic music. The ones I heard were all great in their way worth to give them a listen.

Monday's Long Song

 

Last Friday Jesse Fahnestock released his latest output Other Skies a collaboration with singer Emilia Harmony. Regular visitors know that I like the music of Jesse Fahnestock and featured him at these pages several times. The whole year saw him busy with several releases but this one is ace and will surely appear in my year ends list. As he said he tried to be like Primal Scream on Higher Than The Sun or The Doves on Fallen. And yes he fulfilled everything you can expect. Other Skies is dominated by a pumping bass and a psychedelic mist. How to make a great song better is showed by Sean Johnson and Duncan Gray on their Hardway Bros Meet Monkton Uptown mix when they added a lot of dub to this song. Violent Drive

 

Yesterday I featured Jesse Fahnestock's latest release that grabbed me from the start to the end. Today is the time to feature the latest release by Kerala Dust, a band regular visitors know that they appeared at this place for several times. Kerala Dust is a band formed in 2016 by Edmund Kenny in London and now switching between Berlin and Zurich. During the last years they played their very own version of Brisish Americana but now they left all their roots behind and made their own unique sound between Velvet Underground, Can and bluesy Americana. Kerala Dust made one of those albums you can hear in a row and it never gets boring. Hypnotic rhythms changes into progressive sounds to return into a bluesy mood with picked electric guitar lines to include Portishead sounds into their music. Since I got this album it was on heavy rotation and I can only recommend this here. 

Transition Theory

 

Last Sunday our dear friend Khayem released a post featuring 10:40's new album. Jesse Fahnestock made an album that I never expected in this way. He left his usual ways in mixing great music and turned into many kinds of music and sounds he was inspired by. And he made a record that grows for me the more I listen to it. If it was a slow-mo dub-inspired journey on Regime Shift Dub that could appear on every album by The Orb or a bleeping experience on At the turning of the time with a chilly groove  or Jimmy Ripp, a psychedelic krautrock inspired song with an analogue inspired groove. He makes everything right on this record. For me a highlight of this year because I didn't listen to any other album I can find more details in many songs the more I listen to them.

 

One Way To Go

It's December and Christmas is not far away. The cities are lit up and many people meet at Christmas markets to drink mulled wine after doing their Christmas shopping. Personally, I don't have much to do with the pre-Christmas season and don't immerse myself in consumerism. That's why it's all the nicer that Jesse Fahnestock aka 10:40 has a present ready for us. Since the beginning of the month, he has had an Advent calendar on his Bandcamp homepage in which he gives us an insight into his musical cosmos every day. One Way To Go is a shoegaze based excursion to cosmic sounds that could be a highlight on every record by Andy Bell. Monday's Long Song

 

In spring this year Matt Dunn released Disko Drohne an EP an uptempo dancehall inspired piece of music that now was remixed by various artists via Paisley Dark Records. Jesse Fahnestock made under his stage name 10:40 a rework that was inspired by The Doors early Stone Roses with sitars and leads you to a dark atmosphere on a cold November night.

Since I could not decide between two versions, here exceptionally a second song. This one is by Rude Audio and with more bleebs and beats and a bit brighter than Jesse's one.

Monday's Long Song

 

Kissed Again was first released as the closing track of Higher Love's label first sampler of Balearic inspired music half a year ago. Now Stockholm based DJ and producer Jesse Fahnestock is going to release this song under his alias 10:40. Great piano chords opens the song to join smooth electronic beats and acid house inspired sounds. For me a good way to start into a new week.

What Happens Now

 

A few days ago Jesse Fahnestock, a Swedish producer and DJ, introduced me to EKDK, a Spanish duo playing their own style of melodic techno. It is not the music I really join in but this song with it's steady moving groove and the voice of Amy Douglas captured me into a positive mood on my way to my daily work. Nothing more or less.

Thrill Me

 

A few days ago I found this song by Jezebell. I don't know were they are because my investigations in the internet weren't successful. It was released last autumn and mastered by Rich Lane at Cotton Bud. And Jesse Fahnestock is also involved in this production. Nothing more or less than a very fine acid house and balearic inspired chugging piece of music to start into the last working day of the week.

2021 - Short

 

I featured the other days albums that impressed me much and was played often at my place and I thought it was the time to write down the best songs of this year. Many of them you can find on the long posts and I have to admit that I am not the one that is able to finish the list because there were so many songs I heard the first time this year that made me happy once or several times. Other songs crossed my attention weeks later when I listened to them on my yearly playlist on Spotify where I collect new songs year by year. Looking at this playlist I find more than 200 songs and the more I think about it I can't decide which one would reach a top ten. So here are some songs, subjective of course and not showing the full range of music I listened too but still worth to be named when you look back on this year.

How Does It Feel

 

Jesse Fahnestock a Swedish producer and DJ is the mastermind behind the project 10:40 who brought us with Sleepwalker one of the best EP's from electronic beats. On Sleepwalker he re mixed another song by Spacemen 3 after after How Does It Feel almost six month ago. Both songs were released originally on Spacemen 3's third album Playing With Fire. Both songs were remixed on a down-tempo dub floor and both worth to give them more than a listen. Another remixes by great songs from an underrated album.
