Medium - Rehearsal Tape '96

Medium (col) - Rehearsal Tape 1996
1) The Battle
2) On the Left of My Lord Lucifer
3) Countess Bathory (Venom cover)

Updated

Today's destination is Colombia and I could use some help again. You remember the previous one-song rehearsal by Medium I posted here? Well, here they are again with another rehearsal tape from 1996 (which I titled slightly different to keep 'em from being mixed) and once more I got no tracklisting to go with it. Except for the third track which is extremely easy to identify. I'm pretty sure their two originals are from "The Battle" demo yet that's little help as I haven't gotten that one. Help would be greatly appreciated!

UPDATE: RazorAttack confirmed both tracks are from "The Battle" - he gave as titles "La batalla" and "A la izquierda" which match, well, "The Battle" and "On the Left of My Lord Lucifer" on the demo. I'm not sure if they were titled in Spanish like he said or did they switch language with Abaddon (both tracks appear on the '08 album), but since they're in English on the demo I used those versions of the titles here too.

Soundwise this is less bass-heavy than the previous tape was and also a bit less messy, again good enough for a demo or rehearsal demo. The music has still that same old school vibe and groove, first track sounding almost heavy metal at first but getting very ferocious and fast around the middle. It returns to closer to the initial moods again before the end. Second track follows starting at bouncy midtempo, sticking to it for most of the track and speeding up to end. A cool solo around mid-song. Last song should need no introductions. Both originals seem very recognizable and I suppose if you had the demo you would be able to name them pretty easily. Cool stuff, hopefully the titles and a rip of "The Battle" surface soon. Meanwhile this is recommended for people into South American black metal and generally into more old schoolish sound.

Here's some reading for you, Abyss Ritual 'zine from Colombia, concentrating on black metal and made by two guys called Tshoggua and Putrid. I think they did at least 2-3 issues more after this. Would be interesting to see some of the preceeding ones too, don't know if all were in English though. One of the guys did also another black metal 'zine called The Realm of Nachzehrer, which I should have an issue too but can't seem to find it! But I think it was actually quite similar to A.R. which was very underground sort of a 'zine as you might notice looking at the roster featured. This is definitely a big plus in my books, it's great to see more obscure acts featured! Well, and Mortiis. Yet again. The interviews are mostly quite interesting to read which naturally is another plus. Some of the articles are actually written by the editors while others are label bios reprinted so they vary a lot. Big blocks of typewriter text, typos and misspellings included may intimidate some while others will feel it refreshing. Recommended if you're looking for more ug content and do not care for fancy looks!

Medium - Rehearsal 1996

Medium (col) - Rehearsal 1996
1) Evil Emperor

Mediafire / Depositfiles

Quick one today and another pretty obscure piece from good old tape trading days. Here's a rehearsal by Colombian black metal band Medium, consisting of a single untitled track. Untitled as in I didn't get a title from my trader, don't know if the track had one or not. Don't know much else about Medium either, I think they had a demo or two (and/or rehearsal tapes) out in the 90's and then quit. Metal Archives mentions some of the band members later formed Abaddon which I haven't heard but appears to be black metal. Further info, track title, band pics/logo and other recordings would be welcome!

About the content: we've got one quite long (over 6½ minutes) track with decent rehearsal quality. The sound is slightly bassier than expected and could pass for a demo (well, rehearsal demo at least). Main voice is almost hysteric shriek and the music is nice, old schoolish in the South America tradition and gets almost bouncy at times. It's for the majority of time midtempo but you got both your slow parts and fast bits, so plenty going on for one track. I'd like to hear more from them, check this out if you enjoy old school style black metal recorded lo-fi, South American hordes or collect obscurities.

UPDATE: I've been informed the song title is "Evil Emperor" - I will re-upload with the corrected title ASAP! - Done now.

It was my birthday, so to sort of celebrate I'll post several things, rejoice. First we have the Colombian black metal cult Nebiros, not to be mixed with Polish/German band, the French one-man band (their split demo is quite good - and I want the rehearsals mentioned on the M.A. page!!!) or the UK black/noise one-man wonder. I'm not going to start debating about which one is the true/best Nebiros since I haven't even heard all of them, let's just concentrate on this one for now.

This is a rehearsal tape I got in my tape trading years and it has a quite good sound, featuring first three tracks familiar from their "Guerreros de Lucifer" album (1995, re-released 2005, buy it) and then two quite interesting covers. I'm assuming the 08 meant August, not 8th rehearsal, but not sure about that. Obviously as it is a rehearsal the sound is raw and primitive but it works well for me and I've heard plenty of demos with less listenable sound. Nebiros' black metal is more of the old school sort, taking occasionally influences from old heavy metal as well as their peers. Mostly mid paced and quite simple, I've always found it very satisfying, but as seen from the pussy review on M.A. not all will agree. Decide for yourselves and check it out. The band has also a more recent album (2008) out and released a 7"EP last year so be sure to check them out too!

This is for comrade F.U.C.K.C.O.L who contributes to RAF666underground. Enjoy, brother.

Obviously it is here up for grabs for anyone who might be interested in some raw & crude, ugly & old school real Colombian black metal. I got this in late 1995 from one of my tape trader friends and to speak the truth I wasn't very much into it. Later I learned to appreciate it's primitive, occult charm. The sound is quite good despite the tape's age, a certain hissing is present but it's not bad. As for the recording itself, it has clear rehearsal-like sound, entirely passable for a black metal demo. This isn't one of my more literate days so I'll quit typing here, take it or leave it.
