Spotlight: Why I am DIVERGENT

You may be aware that this week UK Book Bloggers have been divided into Factions and have gone head to head to get their reviews for Insurgent ( you can see my review HERE ) As you can see from my review the book really got me thinking about human nature, the way we fit into society and how characteristics alter due to the challenges life throws at us. So I thought I would apply these questions to myself and examine the factions that make up the society in Divergent/Insurgent to my own place in society. Although we may be born into a certain sector of society this is not necessarily what defines us.

All information and pictures regarding the factions is taken from The Divergent Trilogy Fansite

ABNEGATION:
1. to refuse or deny oneself (some rights, conveniences, etc.); reject; renounce.
2. to relinquish; give up

How does this fit me:

The biggest reason for being ABNEGATION is that I am a Mother. As a parent you go without things yourself in order to provide the best you can for your children. Even the smallest act of selflessness goes a long way. All parents, especially Mothers are Abnegation. Why especially Mothers I hear you ask, because we give our bodies over to what is basically a parasite [ ; D ] for 9 months.

CANDOR:
1. the state or quality of being frank, open, and sincere in speech or expression; candidness.
2. freedom from bias; fairness; impartiality.

How does this fit me:

I value honesty, to be perfectly truthful [ ; D ] I value honesty a lot more than I used to. Having been through a form of personal hell at the hands of another person, with the lies told in order to protect themselves, believe me I truly understand and appreciate the need for honesty. A relationship built on lies is like a house built on sand, it will crumble to the ground quickly.
This does not mean at the expense at someone else's feelings, I do think that tact and diplomacy are necessary skills in life and they are a learned skill dictated by society's acceptance of certain things, situations and people.
I try to tell my girls that honesty is always the best policy, lies will be found out in the end, just accept the punishment if you have done something wrong as the punishment will be worse if you lie.
Lies have a habit of biting you in the bum when you least expect it, you need to have a very good memory if you are going to lie. Be warned [ : D ]

ERUDITE:
Characterized by great knowledge; learned or scholarly
The word “erudite” focuses on knowledge rather than intelligence– intelligence being something you’re born with, and can’t necessarily control, and knowledge being something that you acquire.

How does this fit me:

The biggest thing is probably that I am a Librarian and a Mother, I encourage the pursuit of knowledge all day, every day. In school and at home.
I covered WWII in YA Fiction during a library lesson last year ( you can find details HERE) during which we discussed Hitler's Book Burning, this is what I told my classes:

Books give you knowledge, knowledge gives you power.

The power I mean is the ability to question things, not accept what you are told blindly. Knowledge allows you to overcome any preconceptions about your place in society. Rich, poor, young or old  being able to access knowledge on any subject gives you the ability to achieve anything you want to.

I think that proves my point [ ; D ]

AMITY:
1. friendship; peaceful harmony.
2. mutual understanding and a peaceful relationship, especially between nations; peace; accord.
3. cordiality
It’s not just about banjos and apple-picking. It’s about cultivating strong relationships and trying to understand each other.

How does this fit me:

The key word for me with Amity is FRIENDSHIP. I am probably a really rubbish friend in the 'real' world, I forget birthdays, I never ring but if my 'real' friends need me I would be there like a shot.
I value my on-line friends tremendously, without their support I probably wouldn't have coped with the past few years. I know that no matter what time of day or night, there is always someone there to talk to. FRIENDSHIP is an important thing in life, you never know when you're going to need your friends.

DAUNTLESS:
Fearless, undaunted.
Undaunted: courageously resolute, especially in the face of danger or difficulty; not discouraged.

How does this fit me:

Whereas I am certainly not fearless, I would say or rather other people tell me I am Undaunted. Why? My life got shattered into pieces last year, you all probably know the reason, it had been going on a lot longer than just last year but last year tipped the scales in my knowledge and understanding of the situation. Everything I believed in and worked towards from the age of 20 was turned to dust within a very short space of time.
I have had to rebuild my life and re-evaluate a lot of things. Although at times it is very difficult there is no way I could let myself be discouraged.

This also involves AMITY as I wouldn't have coped with my friends and ABNEGATION as you can't give up when you have children.

DIVERGENT
1. diverging; differing; deviating.
2. pertaining to or causing divergence.
3. (of a mathematical expression) having no finite limits
Diverge: 1. to move, lie, or extend in different directions from a common point; branch off.
2. to differ in opinion, character, form, etc.; deviate.
3. Mathematics . (of a sequence, series, etc.) to have no unique limit; to have infinity as a limit.
4. to turn aside or deviate, as from a path, practice, or plan.

I have certainly deviated from the path I was on - BIG STYLE.

Proving I am
DIVERGENT.

Spotlight: Classics Carnival Coming August 2012

As most of my lovely blogging friends are already aware, I am running an entire month featuring Classic Books that have been re-written and the stories updated. Personally I love Shakespeare, Bronte, Austen and Shelley BUT I also know how much pupils struggle with these books in school. How they find them less than appealing. Following on from a twitter conversation today I thought it wise to announce my plans in advance even though the month isn't until August. Huge thanks to my lovely friends that look after me - what would I do without you in my life even though I haven't met half of you lol.

If you would like to contribute with a guest post or guest review please contact me at asamum3 (at) gmail (dot) com

I am especially interested in posts that examine how the classics can be related to life today, especially to teens.

Thank you in advance and if you would like to copy and paste the images below onto your blogs I would greatly appreciate it.

When Real Life Gets In The Way

I am having panic attacks that I am goingto lose all of my wonderful followers through lack of posting, unfortunately I have had LOADS of personal things to try to resolve and it had just got in the way of blogging [ : ( ] Normally when I know there are school holidays coming up I try to schedule things in advance. It isn't as if I have nothing to put up its just I havent had the time to write the posts.

So today I thought I would start getting back on track (following an attempt to ring the bank - 30 minutes on hold and then Tax Credits - a further 20 minutes on hold *sigh*) anyway here is a little inspirational post for when real life gets in he way of what we truly want to be doing.

As you may be aware I moved house recently. It came as a major shock to realize just how many books the girls have (I am not mentioning mine lol) most of which I know they aren't going to read again. I may be raising a team of book addicts [ ; D ]

St David's Day

You all already know how proud I am to be WELSH.
So I thought I would take this opportunity to ramble about what being welsh means to me.

Wales has never what you could call a rich country but we are rich in culture <3

Wales has some of the most beautiful countryside in the world (yes I am biased)

You can probably tell I have a thing for water.

Lets not forget about the obvious welsh things:

Lastly Welsh songs:

Yep it makes me cry.

This sums it up perfectly:

Spotlight: One Day Global Blog

I came across this purely by accident this morning, I just had to share as it is such an inspirational idea.

Full details taken from The National Literacy Trust:

On 29 February, leap year day, David Mitchell, deputy headteacher at Heathfield Primary School in Bolton will be encouraging pupils, teachers and anyone else, anywhere in the world to write on the same blog.

Heathfield Primary in Bolton has already gained an international reputation for encouraging its pupils to blog. Deputy head David Mitchell introduced classes to the idea in 2009, and since then they have been busy posting their writing online.

Since Heathfield Primary introduced blogging, it has seen a sharp increase in its pupils’ writing results, including those for boys. The proportion of pupils gaining level 5s rose from 9 per cent to 60 per cent in just 12 months, and the past two Year 6 classes at the school made double the expected progress in writing in their final year.

On 29 February, the blog will begin as soon as the day starts in Tonga and end 48 hours later when it reaches midnight in the Western Pacific. Everyone will be able to add postings to the blog with a few clicks, Mitchell says, and he hopes the site will help to create a global picture of people’s experiences that day. “Who will be the youngest? Or the oldest? Will there be any marriage proposals?”

The blog will be moderated by Mitchell and other teachers and volunteers, including, he hopes, some at schools outside the UK. Schools can get more information at:http://feb29th.net.

Read more about the project, blogging tips, and evidence that it works at TES.
David Mitchell will be leading a webinar on the subject of blogging for National Literacy Trust Network members on 13 March 2012. Find out more.
So what are you waiting for - go leave a message.
Also check out the great resources available for teachers.

2012 Hopes and Dreams

I just wanted to write a little post about what I hope to get out of the coming year.

When I started writing it I thought it was going to be little now I think it may be epic and need splitting lol - I tend to ramble [ ; D ]

You probably aware - generally because I wear my heart on my sleeve and my emotions on my face - that 2011 was an absolutely awful year for me and my family. I was really, really hoping to move before the New Year to make a complete fresh start but alas Estate Agents, Banks and general rubbish red tape got in the way. Hopefully it won't be too long before we can move. The house we are moving too is rented - something I never, ever thought we would have to do after purchasing my first house 18 years ago.

It does make me really sad and I have an awful lot of regrets regarding this aspect of my life. However, the house we are moving into is for want of a better word, well, ME. It's OLD lol. It needs an awful lot of modernisation which I am loath to do with it being rented BUT it has a lot of potential even without spending an absolute fortune on it. I will be scouring free-cycle and if desperation sets in calling on my wonderful on-line friends to look out for free/cheap stuff for me too [ : D ] cos you know you guys are AWESOME.

In other news [ ; D ]

Every year I challenge myself to be more organised - this year I truly mean it. I have seen what leaving things can do - in the worse possible way. So no more. I have post-its, colour coded diary and the amazing Lynsey from Heaven, Hell and Purgatory has a wonderful colour coded to-do list for me <3

I have felt that being a School Librarian that I should have a really wide reading range in order to personally recommend books to the teens. I still feel that this is applicable however, I have read a lot of things I haven't overly enjoyed. I find I read heck of a lot faster if I am captivated by the book I am reading. I know it makes me totally shallow but hey life is too short [ : p] I am extremely lucky that I have found blogs to follow whose opinions on certain genre I don't read I trust implicitly - the recommendations I give for these genres are based on their opinions and I do tell the pupils this. So I decided for this year I am going to concentrate my reading on the books I really WANT to read. This does not mean that my reading list will not be affected by other people's reviews especially as I have just bought two books after reading reviews on My Favourite Books

This will also not affect my blog in any shape or form because, I am one very lucky girl that has AMAZING guest reviewers (HERE)

I also have my girls that review for me and a few pupils at school - truly amazing teens <3 They have diverse reading tastes that enhance my skills as a blogger and a librarian. I truly appreciate everything they do.

I have a few things I would like to talk about with the blog but I think that might be for another post [ ; D ]

So for me 2012 is about being myself and really accepting who I am, I maybe 40 but you know life is a journey of self discovery whatever age you are.

Here's hoping all your hopes and dreams come true in 2012.
