Rocroi 1643

Fought on 19 May 1643 between the French army of the Duc d’Enghien and the Spanich army under Francisco de Melo, Rocroi is probably one of the most controversial battles in the long period of conflict between the kingdoms of France and Spain. The numerous sources, be they official accounts, memoirs, or correspondence, most often contradict each other. The principal controversy of this battle, far from being anecdotal, concerns the French right flank, placed under the direct command of Louis II de Bourbon,the Duc d’Enghien. The version generally accepted by historians of French sources affirms that the cavalry of Gassion overthrew and quickly pushed backthe first Spanish companies, eventually defeating them. However, Spanishsources, defended by historians beyond the Pyrenees, contend that the cavalryof the Duc d’Albuquerque, opposing that of Gassion and Enghien, brokethrough the squadrons and two infantry regiments of the French advancedguard on two occasions! Thus, there exist today two battles of Rocroi: the one found in Spanish works and the one found in numerous French works. Reconstructing a global vision of the battle remains a delicate undertaking. For this reason and to avoid any dubious interpretation,it seemed necessary to Stephane Thion to include numerous quotations to illustrate the unfolding of this battle. A great study with splendid military paintings and pictures.

A mixed infantry formation made up of about 3,000 men armed with pikes, swords and handguns, the innovative and influential tercio or ‘Spanish square’ was the basic combat unit of the armies of Spain throughout much of the 16th and 17th centuries. Arguably the first permanent tactical formation seen in Europe since the Roman cohort, the tercio was the forerunner of modern formations such as the battalion and regiment. The variety of different weapons fielded in the tercio meant the Spanish infantry could resist opposing cavalry forces while overcoming every kind of enemy infantry deployed against them. Featuring full-colour artwork and photographs of rare items held at the Spanish Army Museum, this study covers the whole period during which the tercios were active, opening with the third Italian war between the forces of France and the Holy Roman Emperor and concluding with the final transformation of the Spanish tercios into regiments in 1704.

Kodaň 1659

11.února 1659 se pokusila švédská vojska Karla Gustava dobýt v rámci tzv. První severní války dobýt Kodaň.V noci jedenáctého února vyrazili švédští vojáci do útoku.Po prvních úspěších, které spočívali v obsazení 2 zamrzlých dánských plavidel útok absolutně ztroskotal a led před kodaňskými hradbami zůstal pokryt kobercem mrtvých švédských vojáků.Většina raněných navíc přes noc umrzla a ráno " ...zvědavce čekaly odporné scény.Všude po sněhu se válely mrtvoly nebo kusy mrtvol.Zloději nechali ležet těla nahá s odhalenými zraněními a rozšklebenými ranami.Hodně mrtvých bylo zasaženo opakovaně a byli rozstříleni k nepoznání ... A tak se stalo, že mnozí z mužů,kteří viděli v zářijovém slunci hořet Krakov, zjevit se panenku Marii nad klášterem v Čenstochové, nad Zamoscí padat nocí žhavé koule z děl jako hvězdy, andělské husary při poslední zteči na písečných pahorcích před Varšavou...skončili tady své pozemské bytí jako potrava pro psy a lišky ... Obraz znázorňuje kodaňskou domobranu, složenou především ze studentů a řemeslníků., připravenou k odrážení švédského útoku. Vyobrazená jednotka, oblečená kompletně v černém mě tak zaujala, že jsem přes víkend nastříkal "všehochuť" starších figurek od Foundry ( ECW, TYW ) základovým sprayem ( černým ) a tak udělal první a zásadní krok k vytvoření znázorněné jednotky. Nepředpokládám, že se mělo jednat o nějak velký regiment, podle pravidel "1644" jsem si ho proto stanovil ve složení 12 Musket a 12 Pike.
