My World Tuesday - Cichlids

One of the things that keeps us busy is lots and lots of fish. Craig and T are trying to breed Cichlids. I couldn't tell you what kind but T can go into lots of detail. We've had some fish eggs and babies but none that have survived. Until now...
This is a breeding pair of Cichlids that have laid eggs and nurtured the babies so we now have a whole bunch of small fish. The tricky part is figuring out when mommy and daddy decided they aren't babies anymore and they become fish food. With any luck, some of these babies will survive and we will have hybrid Cichlids.

Fish Pic

One of our many fish. This one is in T's bedroom. It's some kind of Cichlid, I think it's a Flowerhorn. Dum Dum (from the movie Night at the Museum) keeps him company.

Fishies

We have several fish tanks with various types of fish. Craig and T are trying to breed African cichlids (don't ask me what types of cichlids as horses are my thing). I was downloading pictures onto the computer which just happens to be next to the fish tanks so I started playing with the new camera.

This is a pink convict (I had to ask).
The little black dots on the rock just below the fish are actually eggs that she is guarding.

A close up of the eggs

Some kind of cichlid - T has named this one "Chompy"

I tried to catch more pics but some of the smaller fish move so fast that it's just a blur. I have to do some more reading about using the settings on the camera and I'll try again.

Small Fry

fry (noun) - recently hatched or juvenile fishes

Did you know that this is where the expression "small fry" came from? T has a pair of bubblegum cichlid fish in a small fish tank in her room. The fish laid eggs about a week and a half ago which hatched and we've got little fish! Lots of small fry! It's hard to see since they are so tiny but the white specks in this photo are actual little tiny versions of mama. They swim around and when mama feels they have ventured too far, she swims out, scoops them up in her mouth and spits them out where she wants them (in this case a small Mason jar). All mothers should be allowed to do this :)

Sunday Stills - Color

This week's Sunday Stills Challenge - color. Since the weather has been uncooperative and dreary, I have to dig into the archives. I take lots of pics of my family, my critters and just things that interest me.

Believe it or not, this is a poison ivy vine in the fall of 2007. They look beautiful but I blister pretty much at the sight of them. I took this with the zoom setting ;)

This is T and Jet at a 4H horse show in October of 2008. I took this from a hill above the riding ring. It was a beautiful warm day - the grass was a brilliant green, not a cloud in the sky, and an obstacle course was set up in the ring with fall decorations. I was able to frame the pic to really get them in action.
Same pic, cropped to really see the horse and rider. The quality isn't the best because of the distance but I really love the pic, especially since she is jumping in her barrel racing saddle on a horse she uses for gaming (not the norm for this type of show).

A bleeding heart from my garden

And this contribution is from hubby and daughter - this is the other hobby in our house. It is a baby Flowerhorn cichlid. They are trying to breed these. This is the fish's natural color - no enhancements made.
