Black Flag over the Horizon!

So]]This past weekend a couple of friends of mine did a Paint weekend, it was designed to get folks painting and we were going to work on LI, but you could also work on other stuff. So I had dug out a few pirate models that I wanted to get painted, well one thing turned into another and by Monday, I had painted a total of 79 models! Here are the results.

Old Glory captives

More Old Glory, this being some Governor types, all but one (the Cook) are Old Glory. The cook is from Black Cat.

An assortment of Old Glory Captains

Old Glory armed civilians.

A few more Captains from Old Glory.

Old Glory sailors

These are old Foundry models

A mix, on the left, and Center Black Cat, right is an old Ral Partha dancer.

More Old Glory pirates

All but the drummer are Old Glory, the drummer is an old Foundry.

So there you go, more Pirates for some games of LotHS and some models that have been waiting for some paint for a very long time.

Pirates, Desperados and Ghosts!

 So,

Been getting back into the swing of painting and finished up a few Pirates that I have had laying around for years, all but the Captain, are Foundry, I think the Not Capt Jack is from Black Cat Miniatures. It was nice to get the brushes back in action.

A bunch of Scallywags!

Now they are upstanding sailors!

Next up, a few Pulp Miniatures Banditos, I picked these guys up from Adepticon well over 5 years ago and wanted to get them painted.

We don't need any stinkin badges!

This is an Idol I picked up from Reaper a few months ago, was going to use it in my Viking games, but realized I can use it pretty much for any period really. It reminds me of the idol from 13th Warrior.

Mother goddess???

Take what you can & leave nothing behind!

Then while listening to Apache by the Shadows, I had a great idea for a Boot Hill scenario for FfoL and needed some ghostly gunfighters. I had a bunch of Foundry old west models around and they are shorter then my other ranges I have. So I decided they would be perfect for some Undead!

Ghostly Gunfighters

And here is the colors I used to paint these guys, no GW foundation paint here, just good old layer painting. Yes that is an old Citadel Colours Blue Wash, its about 30+ years old and still has half the bottle left!

Lots of colors!

Well there you go, the brushes are back to painting and getting that mojo back, now to find time to play some games, its been months since I rolled dice!

More buildings for Pirates!

 Okay,

Got this new building assembled last night, they call it a corner tavern from Sarrisa Precision, It has a very Caribbean feel to it and all the buildings I plan to add a Spanish style roof to the buildings. With these newest additions to my collection I can now do a nice little port town for pirates to raid.

A group collection of the newest buildings.

Next up as I said, Spanish tile roofing and then onto paint, so stay tuned.

New settlement rises

Okay,

The first building for my LotHS table was built this weekend, the Simple Block house. Nice little kit and the kit allows for the doors to open as well as the shudders if you choose. I will be adding tape to the doors to act as hinges and will be opening up the shudders as well. But it feels nice to get back to a fun project that has been in the works for years.

Simple Block House

I also put together these two fountains that can really be used for any period really, its for the Gangs of Rome line, but a fountain is a fountain to me. You get two fountains in the kit which is nice.

So there you go, a couple of terrain pieces completed, now have about four more buildings to assemble for this LotHS table.

The Old West and Caribbean just got a little bigger!

 So,

With my renewed vigor for gaming, I took the plunge and purchased a few buildings for some Old West Gaming and some Pirate gaming, my go to Sarrissa Precision

I ordered last week and today the box arrived well intact, the only thing that had any damage was the little candy they threw in there, the weight of the building kits smashed it...LOL

So here is the haul, first up a nice color catalog that they threw into the box, very nicely done, nice pictures of all there stuff.

2023 color catalog!

Next up items for the Caribbean build project, Fountains. I suppose I could use these for Old west down in old Mexico.

Fountains, there are two in there I think.

Next the actual buildings for the Caribbean, these are from their Mediterranean line and look like some nice Spanish buildings.

Two Story Farmhaouse

Two story building

Next up are the buildings for my Old West table, I have been needing a nice bank, and when my buddy came out from Kansas last year, we went to Tombstone and this bank looks like the one down there.

Brick Bank for the Desperados to rob!

Blacksmith for all your wagon and horse shoe repairs!

Hotel. looks like one that was down in Tombstone.

Dead mans bundle, an Undertaker, Boot Hill and an Undertakers shop with Hearse.

So there you go, Just a few buildings to keep me busy for awhile.

Dwarven Pirates!

Good Morning all you salty old dogs!

Today a quick update on a few really old models. So many moons ago I used to play a GW classic game called Mordheim, I had a few warbands from the lists in the book but wanted a dwarven warband (the rules released with Town Cryer). But I had this great idea of using the Long Drongs Dwarven Pirates which were a Unit of Renown for Warhammer Fantasy Mercenaries unit.

Well as soon as I saw these models I knew I had to buy them and would use them for Mordheim and started painting them. But then we stopped playing and the group I played with went their separate ways.

Dwarven Pirates!

So the dwarves got put into a box half finished and left they way they were for many many more moons. But then last week when I got the itch to paint up some of my Historical Pirates, I remembered these guys, so the hunt was on to find them.

I did locate them and as I looked at them I decided to mount them on 25mm rounds (1" washers actually) and decided to finish them up. I have to say Iloved this little project and there was ot much left to do on the models and was a nice little break.

So what started out well over 20+ years ago finally got finished and the models look awesome, it actually has me thinking about using them for Mordheim again, hmmm.

Avast me hearties!

Funny what time and a movie will do, so this past weekend I was scrolling thru the old tv stations and landed on Pirates of the Caribbean Curse of the Black Pearl, which has held up over the years.

Now some know I wrote Legends of the High Seas for Warhammer Historical 14 years ago now and the Pirates of the Caribbean movie was inspiration for the game.

Now after sitting there memorized watching the move, I got the bug to bust out a few miniatures from Black Scorpion and a few others. I have been working on a few at a time and the crew is growing. Its nice to come back to the pirates again, feels very comforting.

Russians and Pirates

So,

Life has been interesting, now that we are starting to open back up, one more thing now has us back in our homes...sigh.

But enough of that, I have still been busy, did my last commission for my buddy Robert last week, a Regiment of Russian Napoleonic troops for him. Robert gave me some completed troops to match paint to, and I did a great job match painting them, see for yourself below.

Roberts Russians
The other thing that ended up on the paint bench were some pirates! My buddy Merle in Kansas reached out to me a couple weeks ago and said that his local group was going to be playing Legends of the High Seas and wanted to let me know about it, basically that people were still playing my game.

So because of this, I dug through the old lead pile and found some figures to paint up. I have been painting a pirate a day and do most of it on my lunch hour as I am still working from home. Here is last weeks and this weekends accomplishment.

Pirates for the Wicked Wench
So there you go, still painting and planning, I have about 7 more pirates to complete and now I am looking at doing some terrain work for some Necromunda, so stay tuned!

Legends of the High Seas turns 10!

Wow,

My little pirate book un-officially turns ten years old this month, reason for the un-official tag is that I started writing it in May of 2006. Last night I stumbled onto my original notes when I started writing and it took me by surprise that it has been ten years.

So I figured with the game being ten, I should give some background on how it came to be and where it is going. So take a seat and listen to this salty tale of pirates and plunder.

Well as a few readers know and a few folks that have the book, it all started with a the First Pirates of the Caribbean movie, but the allure of pirates started further back with me. Living in Southern California for most of my young life, I would make frequent trips to Disneyland with my family. Pirates of the Caribbean was & still is one of my favorite rides in the park. Ironically when I worked at Disneyland, I was never trained on Pirates, learned just about every other ride on the west side of the park, but never Pirates.

When I moved to Phoenix Arizona back in 1999, I joined up with my current group of gaming buddies and started doing historical gaming. One buddy of mine, Tom of Ponatowski's Legions ran a big Pirate game using rules that the group had created. It was a huge multi player game with all kinds of pirate drama going on, I loved those games.

Then in 2001, Games Workshop released Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle game. Many in our gaming group, including myself got into this game. But as I played it, I thought this would make an awesome Pirate or Samurai game. Also at this time our game group had Warhammer Ancient Battles in heavy rotation and my buddy Tom had connections with Rob Broom of Warhammer Historical.

I can't remember when Mark Lathams Legends of the Old West came out, but once I saw what he did I was blown away and thought GW had some sort Servo Skull following me around stealing my ideas for adapting the LotR game for historical uses.

Then June 2003 and the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie came out, after walking out of the theater with my wife and son, I knew I had to do something with pirates. I went home that day and started thinking of how to write a set of rules for pirates.

Flash forward to early 2005 and I finally had gotten a rough draft of Pirate rules done. In fact all these were was the Lord of the Rings appendix break down in the back of the Lord of the Rings SBG fellowship book. At this point, Tom and I got in a game of pirates using the LotR rules. Tom mentioned he was in direct contact with Rob Broom and that he was looking for authors to expand the Historical line out from WAB. So after a few brief emails back and fourth, Rob Broom asked me for a proposal on writing LotHS. I then waited. I finally got word in 2006 that I was given the contract to write the game, but I had to have it ready in about 6 months to write it. Luckily I had started with basic writing before then, so I had a jump start thanks to Tom prodding me about writing.

From that point onto 2008, I was writing and play testing the game with a small world wide group of salty dogs. Also during that time, I was put into contact with many game companies that produced pirate models off of some of the stats and crew types. Black Cat Figures, Black Scorpion Miniatures, Crusader Miniatures were just a few folks that did figures for the game. I was in nerd heaven having some of my favorite companies talking to me about sculpts for the game. Many other companies also sculpted up new pirate figures to be used for the game as well.

In late 2009, early 2010 I started working on a follow up book to LotHS and the working title was going to be called Shipwrecked. It was going to add in a few more crews, Spanish, Dutch as well as some other types. Would have more scenarios as well as more campaign elements. But that's when Warhammer historical started having internal troubles. I was told that there would be no other books for LotHS and that this could be the end of Warhammer Historical. Well the end did finally come when GW pulled the plug on Warhammer Historical. I can't go into the issues, but I was well aware of what was going on and was told to keep it hush about it.

Now many folks have asked about why I didn't just put out the new stuff I had written for Shipwreck on my own. Well there were two main reasons, first, the computer I had written it on had a melt down and I was not able to get the files recovered from it. Secondly and more importantly, I was done with thinking about and writing about pirates! I wanted to move onto other hobby projects and after the let down of not getting a second book, I was just done with that chapter of my life. You see writing a book and getting it published was a bucket list thing for me, so I can cross that off the list.

So what now of Legends of the High Seas? Well I wish I could say that GW is going to put it back into production, but alas that is not the case. But what I have been thinking about is starting to re-write Shipwreck and make it available here on the Ole Cursed Treasures blog. Why the sudden shift you might ask? Well that's a good question that I had to ask myself. While out with a Robert, Jeeping in the desert, Robert asked me, "So, what do you want to do hobby wise?" Well I after spending a few days to think on it, I want to play pirates with my rules! (as well as a few other games).

So my plan is to start writing up a few lists, working on a few Pirate models and finally getting around to building me a proper Caribbean town to play said pirate games on. I want to get back to having fun with my friends and possibly dragging a few of them back into pirate gaming. I think enough time has passed for this old salty dog to head back to sea with the other bilge rats!

So last night, I painted up a few X marks the spot tokens as well as pulled out all my pirates from there little container homes. It seems I still have a ton of Pirates that need paint! So stay tuned folks, there will be more LotHS content coming along. now I must get back to digging out all my pirate booty and press ganging a few fellow gamers back into the Pirate Kings services!
