Pinterest Challenge - Reversible Apron Dress

REVERSIBLE APRON DRESS

Well, selling our house has been slow going so far so I need to keep myself busy so I don't stress out about it.  Last night I started thinking about painting the kitchen backsplash to give it a faux finish stone look...you know...trying to feel in control of getting the house to sell quickly (not desperate it's only been 2.5 weeks, but who wants it to drag on right?)  Anyways, to keep myself from a possible disaster I decided to take the Pinterest Challenge today instead and make the Reversible Apron Dress I pinned from Scattered Thoughts of a Crafty Mom.  I bought the fabric a while ago and have been meaning to do it...so today was the day!  Once my little guy went down for his afternoon nap, I went to work on it, it came together rather easily and my piece of junk sewing machine actually didn't give me much to complain about.  My daughter had fun cutting fabric scraps and pretending she was making the same top for her doll.  Here is the final result (I would have taken pictures outside for better lighting but it's 100 out there and J had no interest .)  Anyways, I love how it turned out, as this is only my 3rd attempt at sewing clothing for children (2 Rapunzel dresses...one for J and one for my niece) and they were not perfect....this Apron Top was so easy, nothing went wrong and I am sooo happy about that (especially because did I mention I have the most annoying sewing machine ever???)

Anyways...Here it is

Wanna Try it?

Check out the PIN HERE!

Here are a couple pics outside with better light with the green side.

Yes it's been so hot and dry for so long...everything is dying even though we water it.

Land of Nod Floor Pillow Knock Off

Floor Pillows

I saw these floor pillows on land of nod or pottery barn a long time ago and wanted to make a knock off version...as it sat on my long list of things I wished to do, I stumbled across a great tutorial from Susan at Living with Punks who saw them and had the same idea but actually did it!  So I bookmarked her tutorial and have been wanting to make these ever since and tonight was the night!!! If this gives you any idea of how long things may be on my wish list of things to make and do...Her tutorial was posted two years ago and that's about the same time I bookmarked it.  Since then it's been pinned 27K times!  That is incredible!  One of those great things about pinterest....I can go look at my boards and see the things I want to do verses having them become lost in a bookmark folder like this did for a long time....so now I have her tutorial lost somewhere in my bookmarks and on pinterest.

Anyways, I was so glad she made a tutorial because it is really easy to follow. I got to make the floor pillows AND got to skip the trial and error part!  So these are my floor pillows....and here is the link to the great tutorial Land of Nod Inspired Floor Pillow.

awww...these floor pillows brought them together...look at them so happy holding hands!!! I didn't even tell them to do this I promise!

this didn't last long...once they noticed the handles on the floor pillows, they made a great handle for holding on while having a pillow fight...

Anyways, these were not hard to make so if you are still pretty new to sewing my suggestion would be GO FOR IT! The Tutorial by Susan is really easy and simple to follow!

Scrappy Saturdays!

I've been thinking about starting a weekly link-up for a while now and just had the idea the other day while making some flannel PJ bottoms for a doll that it would be fun to host a a link-up featuring projects made from scraps!  So if you have made anything using fabric scraps, paper scraps, old clothing, or any other re-purposing projects, link em up!  I'm not going to be too strict, if your creation was coming up with an amazing dinner using leftovers...that works too or if you think of something else!  So come back every Saturday and link up your projects and lets get inspired visiting each other!

I may form a new hobby of making doll clothes, it was like instant gratification!

Flannel Scrap Doll PJ Pants

So there is a thrift store not too far from our new home.  I have never taken the kids to a thrift store but thought we'd check it out one day this last week.  J didn't want to go in, she wanted to go home and I said "Well, there might be something special inside, let's go check it out!" so she reluctantly went in and then she found it....a snow white toddler doll in great condition for $1.50.  It was love at first sight as Snow White is her favorite princess.  As I buckled J into her carseat, she held her snow white doll tenderly and chatted away with her saying "You are going to be with me now! First I'm going to take you to the park and we can play for a while and then I'm going to take you home and you are going to stay with me..."  We went to the park and J sent her down the slides and pushed her on the swing and made her walk in the sand...then that night when I tucked them in bed together, J was a little disturbed that Snow White didn't have any pajamas to wear, she can't wear her princess dress to bed!  So the next day I let J go through my fabric scraps and pick out something to make PJ bottoms with.  She found some cute pink and green plaid flannel that was left over from the play purse I had made her 2 Christmas's ago.  So I kind of drew a pattern on some paper after tracing the dolls legs to get an idea of the size.  I made these pretty quick and the whole time had the feeling they were probably going to end up not working and thrown in the trash but they WORKED!  And now "the girls" aka J and snow white, look so cute tucked in bed with their PJs on together.  (We borrowed the shirt from the cabbage patch doll)

Here is the play purse tutorial I made with the same fabric 2 Christmas's ago

NOW Let's see what you did and post your project below!  I will feature one of your projects each week!  Don't forget to add Scrappy Saturdays to your weekly blog hop list! :)

No Rules for my link up, but I'd appreciate it if you decided to be a follower and even more if  you linked back to the link-up or posted my button somewhere on your blog!

How to make a Pillowcase Dress

How to Make a Pillowcase Dress
with matching headband

Supplies for Pillowcase Dress
3/4 yard fabric (that is ~45 inches wide) or more if needed mine is made to fit a size 4
5/8 yard of contrasting fabric
at least 90 inches of matching 5/8 inch wide ribbon
matching thread

I made my pillowcase dress to fit my size 4 daughter, so depending on the size of your child you may want to cut your fabric a little longer and wider for a bigger size or smaller if needed.

Wash, dry and iron fabric.

Fold fabric till you have 9.5 inches across.  Cut your fabric to an 9.5 x 20 inch rectangle, repeat so you have a front and back piece.  You should now have two 19 x 20 inch pieces of fabric.  Fold your contrasting fabric in half and cut two 7x11 inch rectangles, when you unfold you have two 7 x 22 inch pieces of fabric for the bottom band of the dress.

For the armholes, with fabric folded in half down the center of the dress, on the top corner opposite the folded edge, mark two inches in from the side and 4 inches down.  Cut out armhole with a slight curve as you go as shown in picture below on both dress pieces.

Open fabric and lay flat, right side of fabric facing up.  Take you long contrasting piece of fabric and fold it in half lengthwise so it is now 3.5 x 22 inches and iron flat.  Place it on top of your dress piece, lining up the raw edges of the contrasting panel with the raw edges of your dress piece.
Pin in place along the raw edges and the sew together.

Press bottom band down and iron everything flat.  Repeat with second dress piece so  you have two identical pieces. that look like this.

Line up the two dress pieces with the right sides of the fabric facing each other and pin the sides. Make sure that the seams between the main dress piece and the bottom band line up.

Sew along the entire side of the dress starting at the armhole and sew all the way down to the bottom.

Now for the armholes, I just used the iron to press the seams in about a 1/4 inch then folded it over a second time and pressed and pinned to create a finished edge and then stitched over it.

Then folded and press the top edge of the dress by an inch and stiched along making a 5/8 inch casing for the ribbon.

Cut your ribbon in half so each piece is about 45 inches.  You can always trim it shorter if desired afterwards.  Thread the ribbon through the casing.  I attached a safety pin to one end of the ribbon to help push it through.

Tie the ends of the ribbon together on each side and your pillowcase dress should look like this

Matching Headband

Plain Headband
you can use one you have lying around or pick one up in the jewelery and accessory section of your local craft store.
Fabric scraps from pillowcase dress
Glue Gun

Heat up your glue gun.  Take a long fabric scrap that is around 1 inch wide (it doesn't have to be perfect).  Put a bit of hot glue on the underside of the headband and then press on the scrap of fabric and begin tightly wrapping the fabric around the headband at and angle working upwards.  You can add more hot glue to the underside of the headband as you go to keep the fabric secure.  Leave a little extra fabric at the ends so you can fold and tuck it under and glue into place.
For the Flower Rossett, I used the scrap fabric from the coordinating band along the bottom of the dress, you can follow the instructions on my Flower Accessory Tutorial Here.  Then I just hot glued it to the headband.

Easter Outfits - Pillowcase Dress w/ Headband & Baby Boy Romper

I decided last minute to make some simple matching Easter outfits for the kids Saturday night.  I have been wanting to make a pillowcase dress for forever so this was a good time to finally whip one up.  I always thought they looked easy but after making one, it was so gratifying because they really ARE so easy and look so sweet, what more can you ask for...almost instant gratification!  The romper for my 12 month old son took a little longer but it was still pretty simple, it only took longer because I was being cheap and didn't want to pay $13 for the pattern I found at the store so I made my own pattern, but I made it as simple as possible....No diaper changing access and I didn't even take time to make button holes and sew on buttons for the straps, I went with Velcro.  Well....B didn't seem to like wearing his outfit as much as J liked her dress.  He kept ripping it off, which was easy to do with Velcro.  Oh well...it worked for the day, and the fabric was 50% off at Joann's so I'm not too worried if he never wears it again.  I just had this idea it would be cute if they were matching for the day.

Two things I was excited that we got the kids for Easter was the Jesus Storybook Bible and Bedtime Blessings.  The Jesus Storybook Bible has beautiful colorful illustrations on every page and it tells the stories in such a great way.

We were planning on doing this activity but ended up using up all our eggs when we dyed them.  Here are some instructions for resurrection cookies with a printable chart that I'm going to try and remember to do next year.

And finally, here are 2 videos, Amazing Grace is just such an amazing song with an amazing story behind it.  If you haven't watched the movie Amazing Grace yet, add it to your list!  Plus I love this version of it.
