summer workshops!

Härjedalens Sommarakademi 2013 (The Härjedalen Summer Academy)

Sweden's Pioneering Summer Academy, where performing and non-performing arts will meet

10 days, June 28th – July 7th (English and Swedish speaking), Härjedalens Kulturcentrum

Internationally renowned photographer Anders Petersen will hold a photography workshop and I will hold a paper art workshop during this period. The theme is bark.
. . .

The Summer Academy
Located in Härjedalen, one of Sweden's highest elevated counties, and under the auspice of Härjedalens Kulturcentrum (The Härjedalen Cultural Centre) in a newly renovated timber framed theatre building from 1921, which provides the perfect setting for a truly special summer school experience.

Situated only a short walk from the mystic nature, the Härjedalens Summer Academy offers a fantastic mix. Here, in the peaceful village of Lillhärdal 500 km northwest of Stockholm and 400 km northeast of Oslo, under the tutelage of well known cultural personalities, it will be possible for students, young artists and competent amateurs of all disciplines to enhance their creativity and inventiveness.

Workshop Philosophy
We will not, as at other Summer Academies, hold workshops on specific separate subjects, but strive in the workshop work to find mutual or parallel aspects in what is normally seen as two separate art forms. By challenging artistic development in separate genres, the workshops will seek to articulate shared expressions and positions as well as point out differencies, boundaries and discrepancies.

In each of the parallel 10-day workshops two opposing art forms or cultural spheres will meet. We will, from a given theme, seek and study both concrete and abstract interactions in two given separate fields. The chosen theme will reflect the mystic Nordic nature surrounding the village of Lillhärdal. The theme 2013 is bark.

come fly with me

Sigtuna by air. Our house is somewhere right in the middle of the photo, below the dark green woods.
The large white plains are Lake Mälaren, covered in ice, still...

paper art in the shop's window by Angelica Solander

Back to Göteborg last weekend, this time I flew. I usually prefer to go by train, but it's so unsure this time of year, the trains are often late due to snow or ice etc. This happened last time I went - not so fun after a long workday. But flying proved to be no better - we were also late going back home. But arriving in Sigtuna at 11 pm turned out to be rewarding in a way: the sky above our house was a strange bright green - it was Aurora Borealis, northern lights! Quite unusual this far south.

I popped in at Sintra Arts & Craft while in Göteborg. There was a ceramics exhibition by Eva Skarbäck that I wanted to see. Love those jars (Nonstop) and bowls...

Box making workshop at Rum för Papper went fine. Small group, cosy atmosphere, good results.

happy workshopping Sunday

I spent the last 3 days in Göteborg. Had my eldest daughter Olivia with me, she stayed at her friends house for two nights while I met with friends and relatives, saw a couple of art exhibitions and last but definately not least, held a bookbinding workshop at Rum för Papper yesterday with a lovely bunch of people. The beautiful shop filled with interesting paper goods. It's small and cosy, there's not a lot of room for the particapants to work in, but everyone always manages to make their own small collection of notebooks in varying techniques.

In two weeks I'll be back for the box workshop. There is still room for a couple of participants - why don't you join us? Check out the type of box we're making here :)

Back from a two-day workshop at Nyckelviksskolan, holding a paper maché course for the  "Hantverkspedagogerna" (= craft pedagogues). It's always enjoyable and inspiring to be there. Here are some of the works the students came up with.

Amazing what you can do with paper :)

I'm featured over at the blog All Things Paper today - thank you Ann!

workshop in book paradise

Proud bookbinders! Sara and Clara documenting the fruit of their hard work :)

I held a bookbinding workshop in Sigtunastiftelsens library - a paradise for book lovers! It even smells heavenly from all those old worn pages... Eleven enthusiastic participants attended. We had such a nice evening and would have actually needed more than 4 hours – there was so much to talk about!

For those interested in a mini vacation, combining a workshop with a nice stay in Sweden's oldest town: I'm giving a 3-day bookbinding course at Sigtuna Folkhögskola this summer!

Friday July 20th - Sunday 22nd, check the link here, scroll allllll the way down to the second last post (my husband Mattias is giving an illustration course and he's last on the list).

in the making

A week ago in Göteborg.
Workshop at Rum för Papper, making book boxes with ten enthusiastic participants with various backgrounds; photographers, graphic designers, record label owner, textile artist, author, stylist and otherwise generally interested paper nerds :)
Shop dog Kellogs couldn't care less and didn't understand all the fuss about paper, cardboard and glue.

Yesterday I visited Magasin 3, to see an exhibition with chinese artist Ai Wei Wei. It was extremely interesting, gripping and touching. One of those artists that leave a huge mark in history.
One thing annoyed me though; the museum was swarming with show guards looking over ones shoulder to make sure nothing was touched or that you weren't standing too close. A paradox, since his art also criticizes surveillance...

boxing it

Off to Göteborg again tomorrow!

I feel kind of like a ping pong ball going back and forth, but I do enjoy the trips, going by train is my favourite means of transportation. Sunday I will hold a book box workshop at Rum för Papper. Here's what we'll be doing, a box for three books (A6-format). Simple enough, but you have to be meticulous if you want a snug fit.
Check in to see if there are places left!

I have some time when I arrive, to pass by Göteborgs Konstskola (art school) that has an open house. They promise interesting activities and a waffel café - this must not be missed :)

room full

Spring Sunday and a room full of paper and participants!
Bookbinding workshop in the small, but cosy, Rum för Papper in Göteborg. Eleven keen paper and book enthusiasts sewed and glued, Tove (one of the three shop owners) served us with paper of all kinds and colors. For me it's always inspiring to be there - and in Göteborg, meeting up with old friends.

In two weeks I'll be back with a boxmaking workshop. There are still places available!

Tomorrow morning I'm off to London with Mattias - and the Bacchanalia opening on Wednesday evening :)

...to go to Rum för Papper in Göteborg and hold a bookbinding workshop on Sunday.

Have a nice weekend!

Kaleido workshops

Sorry all english speaking - this is an ad in swedish for my upcoming workshops in Uppsala :)

paper pulp Nyckelviksskolan

Day two at Nyckelviksskolan was devoted to paper pulping. The students experimented with color and form. And with mixing in coffee-grounds (second image from bottom).
