Century Sleeper - "awaken" (2006 bombworks)

consisting of Ian Arkley of My Silent Wake, Seventh Angel, Ashen Mortality, etc.
and James Allin of death/doom band Visionaire.
having been a fan of several earlier projects from the band members here i really had no idea what to expect.
i suppose it could be said that this release in some ways isn't as heavy as other projects of the guys involved...but that isn't really the case, rather there just isn't as much of a death metal feel.  its been too easily dismissed, for this is a great album, if you heard a bit in passing, give it another shot, surely you will be rewarded.

its doomy and gloomy and gothy to be sure.

at first i wasn't sure what to make of things, but after listening for about 6 minutes, it all started to so beautifully sink in and i realized what a gothy metal treat i'd stumbled upon. the vocals are interesting and emotive and are not stuck in one particular style or form of delivery, which is nice. heavy, not as slow as you'd expect, but strangely catchy dark music from these two accomplished vets.

1. voyage

5. lost on your ocean

pale horse - "mournful" (1993 a.r.t. records)

incredibly excellent release.  here we see a welcome addition to the already fantastic pale horse sound with the inclusion of a few guest artists and some sparingly used (but in all the right places) clean vocals.
a.r.t. records was a really terrible anti-fan, anti-artist  label, but pale horse was really great.

1. iniquity
2. finding solace
3. sublime kingdom
4. false prophet among us
5. through the eyes of deception
6. the treasure

various artists - "NORWEGIAN LIGHTS" (1996 rowe productions)

Norwegian death/doom/metal compilation.
extol and antestor both sound extremely different here than what they went on to sound like shortly afterwards.
its a shame really, both of these bands should have explored there sound presented here for a bit longer than they did. oh well, at least we have this!

Paramæcium - "repentance" (1997 self released)

a couple of months ago i began ripping the "silent carnage" tape by austrailia's Paramæcium, but decided against it in favour of the cd reissue with bonus tracks.
why not? it has a cleaner sound and the two recorded tracks are very much well worth having.
the original "silent carnage" songs sound markedly different from what came after in the career of Paramæcium, but are easily among my favorite output of theirs, though it isn't really fair to measure it all up side by side. (how's THAT for a run-on sentence?!)

Tracks 1 and 2 were recorded in 1994 with new arrangements and feature the band's "Within The Ancient Forest" lineup, while straying FAR from the "within..." sound.
Tracks 3 to 6 are the 1991 "Silent Carnage" recordings. a recording of "abstraction" would have been a magnificent addition to this EP...it definitely should have been here, i have no idea why they didn't record/include it here.
still, this is a ridiculously sweet EP of old school death / doom.

1 Silent Carnage
2 Dead To Death
3 Sogno Di Morte
4 Silent Carnage
5 Dead To Death
6 Abstraction
