beach walk

Yesterday was one of those stellar Seattle days - clear and sunny, brisk yet warm, just begging you to go out and breathe the fresh air after weeks of pouring rain.  So I did.

I went to Lincoln Park, a nearby seaside park, for a walk.  It was amazing.  First I noticed that in spite of the sun, it was colder than I expected and when I turned the point and was walking into the wind, it was downright freezing - but I persevered.

Then I noticed that the type of people who walk on a weekday morning is different from the folks at the park on the weekend.  It was mostly older people walking their dogs or young moms with strollers or toddlers.

Then I noticed this - someone's beach art, left for others to appreciate and enjoy.

Can you see how they jammed the light-colored log into the tangle of roots then balanced the darker branch on top.  Balanced!  I did a double take when I saw it and had to go closer to make sure of what I was seeing.  The branches are each probably 4-5 feet long.

Amazing, right?

Then I continued my walk and left the path and walked on the beach (harder going over those rocks).  But you get a different perspective of the tangle of driftwood.  This amazingly colorful and textured log caught my eye.  Most of the driftwood has all the color bleached out of it so this log really stuck out.

A little further down the beach is texture of a different kind.

After taking several pictures of all these swirls I walked away, glanced to my side, did a double take and went back......here's what I saw.

Do you see it?  It's a log dog!  Mother nature was certainly generous in sharing all sorts of delightful surprises on my walk.  I had the BEST walk!

Then I got home, checked the mail and there was some wonderful mail art and the last of the round robin zines to create in.  Who could ask for a better day????

beach walk

Dan and I went for a fall beach walk last weekend and I wanted to share a few photos....

Some clever person created this fish 'sculpture' from found driftwood bits and branches.  It's so artistic!

A little further down the beach we came across this carving in a driftwood log. Someone put a lot of effort into this art that will be transient. It was such a joy to stumble across these two examples of artistic effort - at the beach, just because, no expectation of longevity, just joy in creating.

I noticed this empty bench in a little clearing at the park (we were at Lincoln Park in W. Seattle) and asked Dan to go be my lonely person......

The path up to the park from the beach - this is where I started gathering those giant maple leaves that became my sewn garland.  I love that in Seattle we enjoy the colorful leaves of deciduous trees but also have the contrast of deep greens of the evergreens like in the park photo above.

Our Seattle beaches are pretty rocky and I miss the white sandy beaches of the Caribbean or Tahiti or Hawaii.  BUT, I've become quite addicted to rock gathering at our wonderful beaches - I have piles of rocks showing up on my window sills, table tops, in vases and wrapped in yarn... There's a lot of beauty in a rocky beach! :) (just hard to walk barefoot across the beach!)

As we here in the west are enjoying our fairly mild fall/early winter weather, my mind is continually wandering to those of you on the east coast and the mess of weather and nastiness that you're dealing with.  I can only hope that you all get through the mess without undue hardship.

sunset

This challenge is just begging to show off some of my photographs - Jenn, hosting APR #34, wants to see a sunset.  Have I got a sunset (or two) for you! I've never painted a sunset, but I've taken many photos of sunsets so here are just a few of my faves (actually the only ones that are tagged so I can find them! :))

Chelan, WA

Alki Beach, Seattle, WA

Hawaii

The Big Island, HI

Tahiti

Puerta Vallarta, Mexico

Orlando, FL

Isn't Mother Nature just amazing? All that rich color and beautiful texture in the sky.....I enjoyed my brief sojourn through my old photos - hope you found something in here inspiring (or at least pretty)!

Wait just a minute!  I wandered back through my artwork and did find a couple that are in sunset colors - so I'm calling them Setting Sun (collage) and Beach at Sunset (watercolor) (hey, look at that shadow!:) ).

Thanks Jenn - can't wait to check out everyone else's sunsets.

beach time

This weekend was high summer here in Seattle - over 85 both days! :)  D and I took advantage and spent the afternoon at the beach. (you know I just realized how much effort I was expending to not mention his name - I see other folks who have charming names for their significant others so as not to refer to them by name.....but, honestly, I'm all over the web with blogs, flickr, FB, etc and mention his name all the time, so there's really no expectation of privacy and I have no secrets...so I give up on that - hubby's name is Dan. There, I said it. In the future, I'll refer to him as ..... Dan.)

Anyway....a few beach photos from summer in Seattle!

Here's my obligatory foot photo - and that's as much as I got in the water....it's freakin' cold!

Don't these rocky Washington beaches look appealing?  He actually has a lounger cushion under his towel...not laying directly on rocks!

Occurred naturally, didn't help mother nature along.  Looks like kelp salad doesn't it?

Beautiful colors in this wood, huh?

Rocks on driftwood log with iron bar.....
Hope you all had a relaxing, pleasant summery weekend as well.
