Who Was Who Is Who #32

So for want of anything better to write about on a Monday, I'm going to go through all my copies of Who's Who and see if I can predict who will make it over to the new DCU by the end of 2012, who might make it and who hasn't got a Night and Fog's chance.

NEGATIVE MAN - at the time of writing (end of March) we've seen The Chief in the background of a story so it seems likely that the Doom Patrol will be appearing at some point though nothing's been confirmed so far. With that in mind, I'm going to put him in the possible column.

Who'd Like A Cocktail? #77

Kilowog comes up with an interesting expletive in Green Lantern #52

  • Black Terror #9 - Phil Hester obviously learnt his writing skills at the Kevin Smith School of Getting as Many Words as Possible On To The Page; this all seemed a little crammed in, especially at the start, with no real pay-off except the reveal that Black Terror's secret wish was . . . a ghostly flying pirate ship.
  • Green Lantern #52 - Sinestro the White Lantern; John Stewart being cool and collected; Nekron suffering his first real loss; and on top of that, the reveal that Compassion is a many-tentacled thing.
  • Justice League: The Rise of Arsenal #1 - come on, did we really need to see what Lian went through?
  • Power Girl #10 - the circle is almost complete as Ultrahumanite returns to give Power Girl grief . . . in the body of Terra! "The banana and bad behaviour", "What have you done with Terra's brain?" . . . damn I'm going to miss this team when they go.
  • The Stand: Soul Survivors #5 - the adaptation gets to the halfway point and the good guys are on the move.
And what made me smile:

Power Girl's team have a little dig at themselves!

Blackest Night #8 Cover Revealed

The Source, DC Comics' blog, revealed the inked cover of Blackest Night #8 which has Sinestro pretty much front and centre:

Looks like just about everyone with a ring bursting out of Nekron's skull?  Bruce Wayne's skull? Some poor bastard's skull!  Have just noticed, though, that Mera appears to be missing . . . doesn't bode well for her.

Who'd Like A Cocktail? #65

And the first Cocktail post of 2010 rolls in all too quickly:

  • Battlefields: Happy Valley #1 - Garth Ennis's wartime stories returns with an established bombing crew forced to accept a new pilot straight out of training. Genuine characters with dialogue that's so liberally peppered with profanity that even the main character comments on it!
  • Black Terror #6 - this mini-series has started to drag of late; it could probably do with being read all in one sitting which (if I'm lucky) I might find time to do.
  • Blackest Night #6 - something of a holding issue, this one, as the Deputy Lantern Corps is created in time to fight back against the forthcoming invasion, but still a good read. And I'm so looking forward to the forthcoming resurrected series that are advertised in the back of the book!
  • Blackest Night: JSA #1 - the JSA fight back against the Black Lanterns; Power Girl gets pissed off; and Mr. Terrific realises he's been pre-empted just a little too late. A couple of gripes, though: how come Kal-L is in his standard and not Black Lantern costume? And why does Power Girl refer to him as her cousin in one panel and then, four panels later, as her uncle?!
  • Crossed #8 - man, this is one messed up world.
  • The Dark Tower: Battle of Jericho Hill #2 - wait, nine years went by? Just like that? This General Grissom looks like he's being set up just to act as the bad guy for this mini-series rather than some one of any note. Still, as ever, the art's gorgeous.
  • Green Lantern #49 - John Stewart deals with the return of Xanshi and his dead wife excellently, just in time to get a big shock as he leaves. Oh and we kinda/sorta get the origin of Nekron as a little extra as well.
  • Justice Society of America #34 - no surprise who the guest villain turned out to be; love how Liberty Belle rationalises how her and Hourman can be on different teams but still be married; and really liked the Society having safeguards in place to prevent further infiltration.
  • The Stand: Soul Survivors #3 - Fran and Stu get together, leaving Harold to scheme his schemes.
  • Teen Titans #78 - Deathstroke and his family fight against the Black Lanterns with a team-up at the end that I didn't see coming.
And what made me smile this week:

Mera gets feisty facing off against Wonder Woman in Blackest Night #6!

Who'd Like A Cocktail? #59

With the wonders of technology, I'm not even here when I'm posting this!

  • Ambush Bug #7 - the mini-series that almost died finishes in typically bizarre fashion. Marvellous series but I think this might be the end of the Bug.
  • Blackest Night #4 - Damage is done for! 100%! Nekron rises! Oh crap!
  • Blackest Night: Titans #3 - who'd have thought Dove would turn out to be the saviour of the day?
  • Final Crisis Aftermath: Ink #6 - a bit up and down, this series, but at least that ending's kinda cool.
  • Green Lantern #47 - waaaaait a second . . . did Sinestro just get a first name after almost 40 years? Or have I somehow missed that in the past?
  • Justice Society of America #32 - Power Girl gets ready to hit someone!
  • The Last Days of Animal Man #6 - and this mini-series wraps up nicely. Really enjoyed this and, if you haven't been reading it, I recommend picking it up once it's collected.
  • Teen Titans #76 - Beast Boy acts like a dick; Aquagirl and Bombshell bitch about each other; Blue Beetle and Static bitch about Beast Boy. That's the entire issue. Anyone remember the days when this team liked each other?
    • Ravager co-feature - Ravager over steps herself and, for the first time in a while, gets her arse kicked.
And what made me smile:
The bare faced cheek of Keith Giffen!

Nekron's First Appearance

I dare say it's no surprise now that Nekron has been revealed as the power behind the Black Lanterns what with the release of the cover art for Blackest Night #5.

To tie in with that, I've written up some basic notes about the Tales of The Green Lantern Corps mini-series from 1981 that featured his first appearance over at the Annotated Blackest Night.  You can find them here.

Enjoy!
