YELLOW AND WHITE IRIS

I've been on a sort of Iris kick lately. They eluded me for so long, but finally I feel like I'm getting a better grip on them. For this painting, I used WN Transparent Yellow and Gamboge. They're really the only yellows I ever use. Most of the other yellows are somehow jarring to me. Anyway this one was alot of fun.

Wabash Purple and White Iris

I love the name of this Iris --- "Wabash Iris". It reminds me of an Iris in a tuxedo. This one makes me very happy, because it is definitely in the direction that I want to go. It makes me feel like I'm making progress. I never realized how complimentary purple and green could be together.

I'd love for you to visit my watercolor blog at http://paintinginwatercolor.blogspot.com

Dutch Iris Flower Challenge

Watercolor by Erika Nelson"Dutch Iris" 2.5"x3.5" watercolor
This format is also known as ACEO (Art Card Editions and Originals). I took the reference photo 7 years ago so I'm glad to have finally painted from it for my watercolor group's flower challenge. This iris was simply begging to be painted with the its beautiful contrasting colors of yellow and purple along with the ridges on the tips of its petals that fold along the tips for added feature.
