Session Overview
Session Thirty-One begins quietly enough.
The party wakes Sunday morning at the Veil, completes the
Alignment of Purpose, and discovers that the relics they carried through the
overwhelming ley-line energies of Abydos have finished changing with them.
Rana’s Tear of Ra expands beyond judgment and healing into
creation. She can restore barren natural environments, create plant life,
manipulate weather, and turn damaged land fertile. Tariq deepens his bond with
the Rod of Command, gaining power over the earth itself. David joins the
Crystal of Physical Perfection permanently to the Arcane Blade, transforming
the weapon into an enhancement of his own body. Michael’s Chrono Charm has
already awakened in the Void. Yusuf’s scorpion amulet remains unfinished, its
eventual nature still to be determined.
The heroes have returned from one of the oldest sacred
places in Egypt carrying powers that increasingly resemble the offices their
ancestors once held.
Then General Haziz Simbel calls.
The legendary commander is looking forward to hosting them
for dinner, but before they arrive he wants an agreement. No powers used
against one another or anyone at his home. His son will not attend. Simbel
himself has abilities that cannot simply be switched off, but he wants their
first meeting conducted without psychic intrusion, magical defenses, coercion,
or supernatural intimidation. The party agrees.
Before dinner, the day becomes an unlikely mixture of
artifact administration, intelligence work, transportation logistics, and the
increasingly surreal consequences of being among the most recognizable people
alive. NAIomi digs deeper into the Spaniard’s history and develops a strong
theory that much of his postwar assassination career was connected to the
United Nations. David retrieves the party’s newly acquired helicopter, thanks
the mechanic who restored it by handing him a pound of handmade gold discs and
then flies the machine back to High House.
Because apparently owning a helicopter was not enough. It
needed to become a medieval gratuity system too.
By late afternoon the heroes arrive at General Simbel’s
estate expecting a dangerous military commander. They find children.
Children from different nations play across the grounds.
Some carry the physical scars of war. Some are missing limbs. Some have
disabilities. Simbel has gathered them into his home and allowed them to grow
up without forcing his religion, politics, or military worldview upon them.
The dinner that follows becomes one of the campaign’s most
important reversals.
Simbel is arrogant, intense, opinionated, suspicious of the
future, and utterly convinced that another war is coming. But he is not the man
Scrambler described.
He fears that Storm-touched people will become the weapons
of the next war. He admits what lies beneath the secret military base west of
Alexandria: a cache of objects believed to have survived the Library of
Alexandria. He offers the party access. More importantly, he begins revealing
that he does not fully understand what his own son has been doing with powered
prisoners.
The military conspiracy the party believed belonged to
General Simbel may instead belong to the generation beneath him.
And throughout the evening, Simbel looks at Rana
differently. Not with fear.
Not with political calculation. With hope.
By the end of the night, Rana communes with Ra and receives
another direction. Somewhere among the recovered treasures beneath the military
base is a map connected to the temples she seeks.
The party spent weeks wondering how to infiltrate the base. General
Simbel has just invited them inside. Sometimes the universe opens a door. Usually
only after the party has spent six sessions discussing how to break through the
wall beside it.
The Story So Far
Session Twenty-Nine brought the Alexandrian Storm to Abydos,
where Michael’s bloodline was recognized by the Temple of Osiris and the
identity of the Nigerian Prince became historical fact rather than convenient
disguise.
The party discovered that the temple was not simply a ruin.
It was an active sacred system of guardians, bloodline recognition, ley-line
power, hidden chambers, and ancient judgment. Michael crossed the Void with
David, awakened the Chrono Charm, and recovered the soapstone tablet belonging
to his royal ancestors.
The party also carried several previously dormant relics
through the extraordinary magical environment of Abydos. Those objects began
awakening.
By the time the group prepares to return north, the world
outside Abydos has not become any simpler. General Haziz Simbel has invited the
entire party to his private estate. The secret military base west of Alexandria
remains connected to powered prisoners, Simbel’s son, and rumors of objects
rescued from the ancient Library. The Spaniard has joined the party’s orbit
while carrying a professional history that remains largely hidden.
Session Thirty-One begins Sunday morning at the Veil.
The party has returned from ancient history. Now they are
going to dinner with modern history.
Major Events & Key Moments
1. The Relics Finish Waking
Sunday begins with the Alignment of Purpose at the Veil.
The ceremony also completes the party’s attunement to the
objects carried through Abydos. Exposure to the Temple of Osiris and its
overwhelming ley-line field has changed the relics, but their final forms
reflect the people carrying them.
Rana’s pewter Anklet of Translocation now allows her to
teleport approximately one hundred feet.
The larger transformation occurs within the Tear of Ra. Rana
develops what she calls the Genesis Array. The Tear can manipulate heat, cold,
and light, but its most significant ability is restoration. Rana can transform
barren or damaged natural material into fertile living terrain, affect water,
create biological or plant life, and manipulate weather sufficiently to sustain
what she creates.
The woman who began the campaign trying to keep five people
alive after an airplane crash is developing the ability to make dead land live. Ra apparently considers subtle thematic
development cowardice.
Tariq invests further into the Rod of Command. Its
connection to rulership expands beyond persuasion. As Pharaoh, Tariq gains
control over earth. He can move it telekinetically, weaponize it, and even
engulf a target beneath the ground.
The Rod once represented command over people. It now begins
representing command over the land itself.
David completes a different transformation. The crystal
sphere he carried from the old artifact cache proves to be the Crystal of
Physical Perfection. He determines how it attaches to the Arcane Blade and
permanently joins the two.
The crystal dramatically enhances his Strength, Dexterity,
and Constitution.
The Arcane Knight has spent months becoming increasingly
magical and has somehow concluded that the obvious next step is becoming harder
to kill. Disturbingly sensible.
Yusuf has not yet finalized the development of his scorpion
amulet. Its future remains open.
The relics are no longer random equipment. They are becoming
expressions of identity.
2. Tariq Prepares a Gift for the General
At breakfast, Tariq tells the group that he had already
planned to bring General Simbel a personal gift.
From his own collection he selects an ancient tapestry
depicting a mounted hunter in a flowing cloak striking down wild beasts. Lions
and leopards surround the rider. Older pagan imagery interprets the scene as
cosmic order triumphing over chaos, while later traditions reinterpret the
mounted warrior as a Christian figure defeating evil.
It is exactly the sort of object one gives a famous military
historian who has spent his career insisting that the ancient world still
matters. David encourages Tariq to keep the gift personal rather than
converting it into a group offering.
Tariq also prepares cigars that can serve as a broader
social gift. This is not merely etiquette.
The party is preparing to meet a man whose public
reputation, private invitation, military apparatus, and connection to their
enemies do not agree with one another.
A tapestry about order defeating chaos is either an
excellent diplomatic gift or the opening move in the most aggressively symbolic
dinner party in Egypt. Possibly both.
3. General Simbel Calls Before Breakfast Is Finished
Every phone at the table rings. General Haziz Simbel appears
by video, he is enthusiastic about their visit, but he has a request. He wants
a gentlemen-and-ladies agreement that no one will use powers against anyone
else at the estate. David immediately clarifies the distinction. Simbel is not
proposing that their powers be removed or suppressed. He is asking for
voluntary restraint. Correct.
Simbel explains that some of his own abilities are constant
and cannot simply be shut down. That is not what he means. He wants everyone to
begin without psychic attacks, magical coercion, supernatural defenses directed
against one another, or powers used against his household. His son will not be
attending. The party agrees.
The conversation immediately becomes almost absurdly
domestic. Simbel asks about dietary restrictions and food allergies. The heroes
realize he is standing in his kitchen preparing for their visit. The terrifying
legendary general may be cooking dinner.
He suggests they arrive around four so they can enjoy the
estate before eating around six or six-thirty. Tariq asks what wine he should
bring. Simbel offers several respectable suggestions without demanding anything
ostentatious.
He also warns them that ordinary security personnel will be
stationed at the gates. The agreement changes the tone of the coming meeting. Everyone
is dangerous. Everyone knows everyone else is dangerous. For one evening, they
agree to behave like people. An ambitious experiment.
4. The Party Plans How Not to Look Suspicious
The heroes begin discussing transportation.
Yusuf considers leaving a duplicate outside the estate as an
early-warning system. The distance from Cairo complicates leaving one too far
away, so the idea evolves into having a duplicate remain with their vehicle. The
group considers teleporting near the estate and approaching normally. Rana
points out that their traditional method is to teleport roughly a mile away and
drive the rest of the way. The others remember how well that worked at the
hospital.
There was an ambush. Naturally, this is treated as evidence
that the strategy deserves another attempt. The party eventually settles on
teleporting outside the property and approaching conventionally rather than
dramatically arriving inside the general’s home.
They have promised not to use powers against him. They have
not promised to stop being paranoid.
5. NAIomi Builds a History of the Spaniard
Before leaving, the group continues investigating the
Spaniard. His real history remains extraordinarily difficult to reconstruct. He
has spent too much of his life making certain that exactly this sort of search
fails. NAIomi changes the equation.
Rather than finding a convenient biography, the system
begins comparing methods, deaths, political circumstances, and historical
patterns. It reinforces the existing belief that the Spaniard was responsible
for the assassination of the French president.
Then a larger pattern appears. NAIomi develops a strong
theory that many of the Spaniard’s post-Middle Earth War killings were
connected to work performed for or through the United Nations. It cannot
determine the precise command structure. It cannot identify who within the UN
hired him or how the arrangements operated.
But the pattern is strong enough to matter. The
counter-assassin Rana is bringing into the Thoth orbit may have spent much of
his professional life as a deniable instrument of international power. The old
world had secret assassins.
The new world has artificial intelligence capable of doing
their performance reviews retroactively. Progress remains a difficult concept.
6. David Pays for a Helicopter Like an Ancient King
The party also deals with the helicopter acquired during the
Abydos expedition.
The machine has been repaired and made functional, though
its communications and registration issues still require attention. David
thanks the mechanic personally.
Then the Arcane Knight decides normal currency lacks
sufficient historical enthusiasm. Using his transformation abilities, David has
created a one-pound sack containing approximately fifty plain gold discs
modeled loosely after ancient coinage. He gives the entire bag to the mechanic.
Work around them effectively stops. The mechanic is
delighted, confused, and more than a little overwhelmed to have the five famous
survivors of Flight 142 standing in front of him while one of them hands him a
sack of gold for fixing their helicopter.
Tariq briefly considers making everyone forget the
encounter. The party correctly observes that waking up with missing memories
and unexplained gold might actually make the story stranger.
David flies the helicopter back to High House. He is
extremely pleased to have a helicopter. This is probably fine.
7. High House Becomes the Staging Ground
The group returns to High House to prepare for the evening.
Rana retrieves the black dress she previously wore to dinner
with Marcus Blackstone. The fact that a resurrected priestess of Ra can heal
the dead but still must keep track of which formal dress is where receives
exactly the dignity it deserves.
The party handles remaining administrative work, dresses
formally, collects Tariq’s tapestry, wine, cigars, and whatever else civilized
people bring when visiting a potentially dangerous general who may possess
supernatural abilities.
They also inspect the estate remotely through ordinary
satellite mapping.
Simbel’s property sits outside Cairo. It is large but not
gaudy: a ranch-style estate surrounded by hills, manicured grounds, fenced
security, roads, a pool, animals, and enough open space to make the residence
feel private without resembling a fortress.
The party has spent considerable effort preparing for
weaponized hospitality. Now they have to survive dinner.
8. The Children on Simbel’s Lawn
The heroes teleport outside the estate and approach the
gate. Security recognizes them immediately and confirms they are expected. They
enter. Then the first assumption about General Simbel breaks.
Children are playing across the grounds. A lot of children.
They are from visibly different national and ethnic
backgrounds. Some bear injuries and disabilities. Some are missing limbs. Their
presence does not resemble a military program or ceremonial display. They live
here.
The image immediately complicates everything the party
believes about their host. This is the man Scrambler called a power-hungry
madman.
This is also a man whose private home has become a refuge
for children damaged by the wars that built his reputation. The party has
encountered plenty of villains who claim to love humanity. It is considerably
more inconvenient when the suspected villain has children playing in his yard.
9. General Simbel Is Not What Scrambler Promised
Simbel receives the party warmly. The formal military icon
is still there. He remains forceful, confident, and entirely comfortable with
his own importance. But the private man is different from the public
caricature.
Tariq presents the tapestry. The symbolism is appropriate:
the rider, the hunt, the defeat of chaos, the layering of pagan and Christian
meaning across centuries. It is a gift aimed directly at Simbel’s fascination
with history and civilization. The evening settles into conversation rather
than interrogation.
Simbel drinks. The heroes, with their increasingly
superhuman constitutions, largely do not suffer the same effects. This
gradually creates the peculiar situation in which one of Egypt’s most
intimidating military commanders becomes the most visibly human person at his
own table.
10. Simbel Looks at Rana Differently
As the evening progresses, Michael and Tariq both notice
something. General Simbel looks at Rana differently than he looks at anyone
else.
The Game Master does not confirm bloodline recognition,
magical awareness, or any particular supernatural explanation. The observation
is simpler. When Simbel looks at Rana, he appears to place an extraordinary
amount of hope in her.
Rana interprets the connection partly through faith. The
others speculate about bloodline recognition. Nothing is confirmed. What
matters is the intensity.
Simbel is not simply interested in the Arbiter of Ra as a
political figure or supernatural asset. Something about Rana represents
possibility to him. For a man convinced another war is coming, hope may be the
more dangerous vulnerability.
11. Simbel Believes Another War Is Coming
Tariq tells Simbel that entities are already manipulating
the world toward conflict and that the party has been working to disrupt those
plans.
Rana asks why Simbel himself believes war is coming. His
answer is not prophecy, it’s analysis.
A nuclear weapon has already been used. Governments are
destabilizing. Powers have appeared across the world. Old assumptions about
military force are collapsing. Simbel believes the winds are moving toward
another war. Worse, he fears that people like the heroes will become the
weapons used to fight it. Storm-touched warfare is no longer theoretical.
The question is whether powered individuals become
independent actors, government weapons, religious symbols, corporate assets, or
something entirely new.
The party has been living inside that question since April
12. Simbel has been planning for it.
12. David Asks the Rude Question
Simbel acknowledges that he may not have enough time to
build a comfortable friendship before asking difficult questions.
So he offers a bargain. The party may ask difficult
questions too. David does not waste the opportunity. What is beneath the secret
military base?
Simbel looks toward Tariq as though he suspects Tariq
already knows at least part of the answer.
Then he confirms one of the campaign’s longest-running
suspicions.
Influential people have long believed that some possessions
were saved from the destruction of the Library of Alexandria. The military base
sits above that cache and yes they have found things. The secret base is not
merely near a rumored Library repository. The repository is real.
The modern Egyptian military has been standing on top of one
of the greatest archaeological discoveries in human history. Naturally, they
put a military base over it.
Humanity sees priceless ancient knowledge and immediately
asks whether the roof can support armored vehicles.
13. The General Offers Them the Door
The revelation does not end with confirmation. Simbel offers
to arrange a visit.
The party has spent weeks treating the base as an
infiltration problem. It is connected to the powered prisoner unit, Simbel’s
son, military artifact operations, and data recovered from Kom El Shoqafa.
They expected eventually to sneak inside, negotiate access,
or force the issue. Simbel simply tells them to let him know when their
schedule permits. The secret base becomes accessible.
That does not make it safe. It makes it more interesting.
14. The Son May Be the Real Problem
Conversation about the military unit exposes another
fracture.
The party possesses information about Simbel’s son that the
general himself apparently does not fully share. Powered prisoners from Borg El
Arab Prison were given a brutal choice: military service or consequences that
could include death because conventional incarceration might no longer contain
them. Scrambler believed General Simbel stood behind the system. The dinner
suggests the situation is not that simple. Simbel’s son has operational
authority.
The general may not understand how far the program has gone.
That creates a far more dangerous possibility than the original theory. General
Simbel may not be the mastermind. He may be the father of the mastermind. The
party does not resolve that question during dinner. But the distinction matters
enormously.
15. Simbel’s Rude Question Is About Healing
Eventually Simbel announces that it is time for his own rude
question.
Before asking, he explains that he has not imposed his
religion upon the children living at the estate. They come from too many places
and traditions. He wants them to choose for themselves.
Some are beginning to develop their own faith. Then he turns
to Rana.
Does healing hurt her? The question quickly becomes more
specific. Could she restore any of the children?
Rana believes she may be able to. Her abilities have
developed far beyond ordinary healing. She can restore lost limbs. She has
resurrected the dead, though resurrection has limits and attempting something
beyond those limits could endanger her.
The conversation touches the general’s dead wife, but Rana
cannot simply reach indefinitely backward through time. Simbel does not demand
that she try.
His question reveals why his attention has repeatedly
settled upon her. The legendary commander who believes another war is coming is
surrounded by children carrying pieces of the previous one. Rana may be able to
give some of those pieces back.
16. The Evening Ends with an Invitation
As the night progresses, Simbel becomes increasingly
affected by alcohol and eventually recognizes that continuing the heavier
conversation would spoil an otherwise successful evening. He asks when it would
be convenient to arrange the party’s visit to the military base. Their next
board meeting is Monday, June 18. The base can follow. The heroes leave with
something they did not expect. Not an alliance exactly, not yet, but a door.
Simbel has answered questions openly enough to change their
assessment of him. He has offered access to the Library cache. He fears the
same approaching conflict the heroes fear and he appears to have less control
over his son’s activities than the party previously assumed.
The most dangerous thing about meeting people is that
occasionally they become more complicated than the intelligence report. Very
inconsiderate of them.
17. Rana Asks Ra About the Path Ahead
After the meeting, Rana communes with Ra seeking direction
concerning the future of her faith, the temples associated with Ra, and the
path she has already begun following. The answer is not a complete map. But it
contains one critical certainty.
If Rana reaches the military base and gains access to the
recovered treasures of the lost Library of Alexandria, something there contains
a map connected to the temples she seeks.
Ra also gives her the sense that she is already moving along
the correct path. The military base is no longer merely a political or
archaeological objective. It has become
part of Rana’s divine journey.
The party began the day wondering whether General Simbel was
an enemy. They end it knowing his base contains something Ra wants them to
find.
18. Tomorrow Begins with Children Playing
The session closes with one final note from NAIomi.
When the party checks its phones the next morning, the
highest-priority item will be a video of the children at Simbel’s estate
playing ball. All of them.
Including children whose disabilities had previously
prevented it. The full consequences belong to the next session. But the image
provides the proper closing beat. Session Thirty-One begins with relics
awakening and it ends with children running.
Character Spotlights
Rana Al-Masri
Rana’s development in Session Thirty-One moves decisively
from preservation toward restoration.
The Genesis Array within the Tear of Ra gives physical form
to an idea that has been growing around her for several sessions. Rana does not
merely punish corruption or heal wounds. She can restore damaged environments,
create living growth, manipulate weather, and make barren land fertile.
At Simbel’s estate, those themes become personal. The
general’s fascination with Rana initially appears mysterious, but his eventual
question reveals at least part of its emotional foundation. He lives among
children damaged by war. Rana may be able to restore what war took from them.
Her communion with Ra then connects the military base
directly to her search for the lost temples. Rana’s path toward rebuilding the
old sacred network and her humanitarian mission are becoming the same path.
Tariq Mansour
Tariq spends the session behaving increasingly like the
Pharaoh his artifacts insist he is.
The Rod of Command develops authority over earth itself,
connecting rulership to land rather than merely people. Tariq’s gift to Simbel
is also carefully chosen rather than extravagantly expensive: a historical
object whose imagery speaks directly to the general’s worldview.
During dinner, Tariq treats Simbel as a peer rather than an
enemy target. He speaks openly about hidden entities manipulating the world
toward conflict without using his psychic abilities to force the conversation.
The result is exactly what the party needed. Information
obtained through trust rather than domination. For a psychic monarch carrying a
supernatural Rod of Command, voluntarily choosing conversation is probably
character growth.
David Hassan
David begins the session by permanently joining the Crystal
of Physical Perfection to the Arcane Blade, dramatically enhancing his physical
capabilities.
Then he gives a helicopter mechanic a pound of handmade
gold. Both actions are somehow equally David.
His most important moment comes at dinner. When Simbel
offers reciprocal honesty, David immediately asks what lies beneath the
military base. The answer confirms the lost Library cache and transforms one of
the party’s most dangerous infiltration targets into an invited destination.
David has spent much of the campaign trying to recover lost
magical knowledge. Now one of the greatest caches of lost knowledge in history
is waiting beneath a military installation.
There was never any realistic possibility he was going to
ignore that.
Yusuf Khalid
Yusuf’s new scorpion relic remains undefined, leaving his
Abydos awakening unfinished compared with the others.
His contribution instead comes through vigilance and
practical security. He considers leaving a duplicate outside Simbel’s estate as
an early-warning system and continues thinking in terms of protecting the party
without violating their agreement with the general.
Yusuf also participates heavily in the discussion
surrounding the children and Rana’s healing.
The session keeps returning to a central problem around
Yusuf: his powers make him increasingly useful as a military asset at exactly
the moment Simbel warns that Storm-touched people may become the weapons of
future wars.
The warning is not abstract for Yusuf. He has already been
prepared once to become someone else’s weapon.
Michael Adeyemi
Michael enters Session Thirty-One already carrying the
consequences of Abydos.
The Chrono Charm has awakened. His royal ancestry has been
confirmed. His relationship with NAIomi continues turning information that once
required weeks of investigation into actionable intelligence.
NAIomi’s reconstruction of the Spaniard’s career
demonstrates that change clearly. Michael’s system cannot magically provide
certainty where evidence does not exist, but it can identify patterns humans
previously lacked the scale to see.
At Simbel’s estate, Michael is one of those who notices the
general’s unusual focus upon Rana. He also remains engaged with the children
and the implications of what Rana may be able to restore.
The Nigerian Prince returned from Abydos knowing his
ancestors belonged to history. Now he begins dealing with what that knowledge
means in the present.
General Haziz Simbel
Session Thirty-One fundamentally changes General Simbel.
He remains arrogant. He remains militaristic. He remains
convinced that conflict is coming and that history rewards preparation more
reliably than optimism.
But the portrait supplied by Scrambler is no longer
sufficient.
Simbel invites the heroes into his private home, voluntarily
removes his son from the meeting, negotiates mutual restraint, cooks for his
guests, answers dangerous questions, reveals the truth about the Library cache,
and offers access to the secret military base.
Most importantly, his estate is filled with children from
the wars that made him famous.
He has not forced them into his faith, He has not turned
them into soldiers.
He has given them a home. None of this proves Simbel
harmless. It proves he is complicated.
Unfortunately for everyone trying to categorize him,
complicated people are considerably harder to overthrow before dessert.
GM Notes & World Narrative
Session Thirty-One is a session about assumptions failing
under contact.
The party begins with a working model of General Simbel
built from Scrambler’s testimony, military secrecy, the powered prisoner unit,
and the general’s son.
That model is not entirely wrong. It is incomplete. The
distinction matters.
Scrambler may have accurately described the military system
he experiences while misunderstanding who ultimately controls it. Simbel’s son
increasingly appears to be an independent source of danger. The general’s
invitation creates the possibility that father and son occupy very different
moral positions despite belonging to the same command structure.
The session also continues the campaign’s movement from power
as survival toward power as responsibility.
Rana can make deserts fertile. Tariq can command earth. David
physically embodies magical perfection. Michael can manipulate time through an
awakened relic. Yusuf can become several people.
These are no longer emergency abilities used by frightened
survivors of Flight 142. They are civilization-level tools.
Simbel understands the military consequence immediately. If
people like the Alexandrian Storm can exist, wars will eventually be fought
with people like them.
The question becomes whether the heroes can build
institutions, faiths, laws, relationships, and moral structures faster than
governments can build powered armies.
The children at Simbel’s estate make that question concrete.
They are what the previous war left behind. Simbel fears another one.
Rana represents the possibility that power might repair what
war destroys instead of merely becoming better at destroying it.
Finally, the lost Library thread stops being rumor.
The secret military base contains an actual recovered cache.
Ra’s communion places a map of the lost temples somewhere within it.
Archaeology, religion, military power, and the party’s artifact investigation
are converging on the same location.
For once, everyone appears to agree on where the plot is
going. This should make everyone extremely nervous.
