Field of Battle3 - Refighting the "Battle of Kunersdorf 1759" - Frederick´s greatest defeat

Manufacturers:  WargamesFoundry, CrusaderMiniatures, FrontRankMiniatures, DreispitzMiniatures

Scale:  28mm

Hi,

after having done a lot of posts about toysoldiers and AI  I recognized that it has been a long time since doing a report on topics concerning wargaming. Sad, but true.

So this post is dedicated to a game we are planning by using the rules of "Field of Battle 3". There will be another post about the game itself. This post is about some background.

I do have a really good collection of SYW Austrians. There are also SYW Russians on my shelves though the number of units is less compared to the Austrians. From the last games there are still a lot of SYW Prussians in my hobby bunker that belong to my friend Walter. Combine those armies and you could play the "Battle of Kunersdorf 1759".

Frederick the Great decided to fight a combined army of Russians lead by Salykov and Austrians under Loudon who had joined near Frankfurt Oder at Kunersdorf. The united forces of Russians and Austrians had been a great danger of marching against Berlin. The number of troops of this combined force was about 76.000 men and round about 430 guns. Furthermore the Russian position on the Mühlberg had entranchments.

The Prussian force was about 49.900 men and 286 pieces of artillery. Though being outnumbered Frederick decided to fight this battle. Due to a march in the night he managed to place his force on the right wing of his enemies. After a good start for the Prussians the terrain had been a big problem for Frederick´s army. After six hours of fighting he Prussians force had been defeated. Two horses carrying Frederick during the battle had been shot. The Prussians lso 569 officers an 18.400 men dead or wounded, 26 colours, 2 standards, 172 artillery pieces and 110 ammunition wagons. This battle was one of Frederick´s worst defeat.  See further information at Kronoskaf.com or on YouTube.

But how to play this battle? Ok, there are already some scenarios in certain books, but I only have one version of a scenario in a book and this one did not seem to be suitable. So I wanted to try something different.

I asked google gemini to create a scenario for this battle. I have to point out that I didn´t ask for units, a certain dimension of the table nor did I tell the AI that we want to use the rules of "Field of Battle 3". The result was an AI created scenario based on the dimensions 6´x4´. The program also gave a recommendation about the number of units to use per side. It even told me somethng about the  history of this battle.

Thinking of the number of units we had at disposal I played a bit with the dimensions. I asked for a         12´x4´sized scenario. That could have been feasible for there are two gaming tables in my gaming room that can be connected, so you could play games of at least 5m wide and 1,60m deep. But this plan was soon discarded, The battelefield would have been to widespread and there also would have been to many manouvres done before first action and fighting started.

So another trial with 8´x4´. The program adapted the scenario and the units to the new dimensions and asked for the rulesystem we were going to play. After that google gemini gave an "Order of battle" to me for both sides devided into three brigades on each side and the units within each brigade. It also added the values of dice (D4 to D12) for every unit and gave advice for the ArmyMoralePoints.

I asked for a battlemap showing the terrain and also got a good proposal.

AI is a very good help for creating scenarios, but to be honest, it is also very tricky. You can´t really rely on all results. The lettering of the battlemap was not accurate, we also had to rethink about the values of dice per unit and sized the AMP´s down. It also had been a very difficult thing to place the terrain of the created battlemap in reality. While doing this I realized that it almost would be impossible to place all the units on the battlefield. Though we already reduced the UI´s from 4 to 3 (we had a problem concerning the number of figures) there probably would be not enough space for manouvre. So my layout of terrain now has the dimensions 8´x5,3´ (2,4m by 1,6m).

So now we will have to try if scenarios created by AI will work. Are the units well balanced, is the terrain playable, how about the dimensions combined with the number of units? We will see and I will keep you informed.

Thanks to my comrade Franz, who gave me advices in matters of "Field of battle" and who also has done the revision of the unit stads and AMP´s.

Here are some pictures about the preparation of the game. The AI created battlemap, the terrain I tried to lay out as near as possible to the map, the compilation of the adversarial forces, the revised Order of Battle for both sides and of course an overview on my wargaming room.

Hope you like it. :)

Cheers

Mike

Painting of Prussian Grenadiers storming the Mühlenberg (AI created).

Two battlemaps of Kunersdorf that can be found in Battlebooks.

The AI created battlemap as a template for the layout of the terrain.

My implementation of the layout as near as possible to the battlemap.

Kunersdorf is already burning an the Mühlenberg is heavily fortified with entranchments.

The order of battle for the Russian/Austrian force.

The figures for the Russian/Austrian force.

The order of battle for the Prussians.

Frederick the Great and his tiny soldiers.

Both forces next to each other.

A view into my complete wargaming room.

Another view onto the battlefield, I will need a Russian flag of the SYW aswell.

Refighting "The Battle of Kunersdorf" - I will be there.

Terrain for Wargaming - "House in a box" created by Gerard Boom aka "Shiftinglands"

Manufacturer:   GeBoom aka "Shiiftinglands"

Scale:   28mm or also 20mm

Hi,

Just wanted to share this video from Gerard Boom on YouTube. Gerard has designed a series of very nice foam buildings he called "House in a box". These houses will come as kits. So anyone can build very cool looking buildings for wargaming in 28mm or 20mm without using a foam cutter by himself.

I like the creations of Gerard very much and it is always impressive to see what this guy has in mind and what he already did and still does for the complete community. For me he is a incredible master mind in foam modelling. He developed a series of tools to make working with an Proxxon foam cutter much easier. He builds fantastic creations and everything he does looks so easy, but if you ever tried to do the same things, you will recognize that to reach these skills needs a lot of practice.

The new series of "House in a box" is announced to be released in December. I am sure that I will order at least three of four of these houses.

Cheers

Mike

Dead Man´s Hand - WIP Part 4 and Final - Buildung a Ranch from Sarrissa

Manufacturer:   Sarrissa Precision

Scale:   28mm

Hi,

I finally got my Ranch from SarrissaPrecision done. Due to a lot of other projects I always had to put the model aside - sometimes for months. But in November I wanted to show it at an exhibition from my club, integrated into a battlefield using the rules of "Rebels and Patriots". Therefore it had to be finished. Sometimes some kind of pressure of time helps finalizing projects. :)

If you have already seen the other WIP´s on my blog, you will have noticed that I didn´t just want to build this model. I wanted to give it some more detail like wallpapers or real shingles for a better look. Though this was combined with very time consuming work it was also fun and I am proud of how it came out.

If you have not seen the other parts of the tutorial on my blog please feel free to follow these links. By searching my own blog about these posts I realized that the first part was published on May 28th in 2024. So it took me 18 months to get this project finished. I am a really lazy guy. :)

WIP Part one:  https://dreispitz.blogspot.com/2024/05/dead-mans-hand-wip-building-and.html

WIP Part two:  https://dreispitz.blogspot.com/2025/01/dead-mans-hand-wip-part-2-building.html

WIP Part three:  https://dreispitz.blogspot.com/2025/03/dead-mans-hand-wip-part-3-buildung.html

So here is the final result of my efforts on this model.

Please feel free to share your oppinions about this building with me.

Thanks a lot.

Cheers

Mike

Before I got this result there was a lot of work to do. Here are some WIP-pictures.

I did not like the flat look of the roof - so I gave it shingles.

Cutting coffee stirs into small tiles...

...and glueing them onto the roof one by one.

In my opinion the roof looks more realistic with these shingles.

This had been a lot of work...

...but it was worthwhile.

Painting the roof sections.

The outcome after a first dry brushing.

A second dry brushing. Now the not yet painted windows had to be smeared
with white paint.

Also the edges of the walls, the brown middle section and also the railing of
the veranda still had their original brown that I didn´t like.

After all parts had been painted the roof needed some tufts and flocks.

Ready for action.

As the buiilding will be used for our games of "Dead Man´s Hand" it is
necessary that you also can play within the house. So it is nicer to have
some wallpapers within the rooms. A look at the ground floor.

And another look, now at the first floor.

Yippieh - it´s finally done.

This is how the model looks like unpainted...

...and this is an example of Sarrissa how it could look like painted.

Hobby in general - A church from "Chicken´sTabletopCrafting"

Manufacturer:   Chicken´sTabletopCrafting

Scale:   28mm

Hi,

today´s post is about the marvellous church I got fron Thomas Hahn aka "Chicken´sTabletopCrafting".

This church was an order I gave to Thomas as I already got some of his wonderful buildings made from styrofoam. It fits perfect to the other buildings and my thoughts are to use it especially for my project of the "Tyrolean Rebellion" I want to play using the ruleset of "Muskets&Tomahawks" and its supplement "Shakos&Bayonets"

I always like the style of Thomas´ building very much and this church surely won´t be the last one to become part of my collection.

If you are interested in how Thomas made this little piece of art just follow the link to his YouTube-Channel. This video is a tutorial about the church this post is about.

And of course here are some pictures of how this building was integrated into my collection.

I hope you like it. :)

Hobby in general - "Shifting lands GeBoom" - Gerard Boom´s outstanding builds in foam

Hi,

number three of my little range of YouTubers worth to take a closer look at.

"Shiftinlands" is a channel dealing with building terrain made from foam. The Dutchman Gerard Boom is a real master and I was lucky to visit one of his workshops about 10 years ago.

If you ever have the opportunity to join one of his workshops - just do it. It´s worth every single dime.

Hobby in general - "Samy Model-Maker" - just check this out

Hi,

it is always nice to get some inspiration for modelling your on pieces of terrain. Searching on YouTube is very helpful and often makes me stunning about the projects and buildings you can find there.

One guy that I admire very much is Samy. He has an own YouTube channel called "Samy Model-Maker". He often builds models from cardboard or paper in 1:160. His models are incredible.

A few days ago he published the following two videos of a house he has done for 28mm figures. And in my opinion this is a real masterpiece.

I often wonder while watching - "why does it look so easy what he´s doing?"

Just follow the links and you will know what I mean.

Cheers

Reinforcements for my Tyrolean Rebellion project - The Austrians are coming

Manufacturer:   FrontRank

Scale:   28mm

Hi,

got my first Austrian units finished with varnishing and basing. Two units of 12 men each, so they could also be parted and used as three units of eight men.

I like the bulky style of FrontRank and in my opinion they do fit to the more filigrane style of Victrix and PianoWargames aswell.

The figures had been painted for me by Krisztian and he did a very good job on them.

https://miniaturesoldiers.blogspot.com/search/label/Austrian

The only thing I had to do was to give the figures a varnish and a decorated base.

Cheers

Mike
