Girls Who Kill on E! Entertainment

I was interviewed for a show for an "E! Entertainment Special: When Girls Kill" that premieres tonight, Thursday at 10:00 pm Eastern. The show looks at the case of four young killers, one of them Natasha Wallen Cornett:

Natasha Wallen was diagnosed with bi-polar disorder early in life and spent some time in mental hospitals. During that time Natasha developed a dark fantasy world, and attracted a crowd of like minded teenage outcasts. One April night in 1997, a tragic clash of innocence and evil lead to a violent and horrifying conclusion for Natasha and her friends. Serving a life sentence, Natasha, the alleged ring leader who was once fascinated with satanic rituals, speaks out about her horrible past and now contends that better mental health care as a youth might have prevented her unthinkable actions.

The Barefoot Bandit

I was interviewed for the "Barefoot Bandit" show for the Biography Channel which comes on tonight at 10pm and 11:00pm Eastern time. You might remember that the Barefoot Bandit was the teen, Colton Harris-Moore, who stole airplanes, boats etc. and eluded the police for months. If you like such shows, check it out tonight (Thurs. What are Jared Loughner's parents thinking today?

Do they blame themselves for the rampage allegedly committed by their son that killed six people and gravely injured U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D) in Tucson on Saturday? Should we?

In a parenting climate that is fraught with mixed messages, conflicting studies and thousands of theories, mothers and fathers across America are taking a moment and perhaps shuddering at the thought of their children doing something horrific. Inside plenty of parental hearts this week is a probing self-evaluation of whether red flags are waving in their own homes. ....

"There are always warning signs. Nobody simply snaps," said Helen Smith, a forensic psychologist in Knoxville, Tenn., who has written books on school violenceand specializes in boys and young men.

She's got plenty of young men in her Knoxville practice who have violent thoughts. But they are getting help because their parents paid attention and pounced.

"It takes a lot of work to get them to open up. It's a matter of sheer time and effort. And it isn't easy," she said.

Let's hope all parents will learn to know when it's that time.

Well, I thought the Post did a good job with this story although to clarify, I have seen many young men over time in my practice but in recent years, I have cut back on my practice significantly.

BBC show on psychological violence ban

I will be on the BBC radio (along with other guests) show "Have your say" today between 1:30 and 2:30 eastern time talking about the new law in France banning psychological violence. There will be people from around the world calling in to discuss this topic. If you want to listen live, you can go to the BBC website and click on "Listen live" on your far right to hear the show.

Update: Well, I only got a few minutes in but learned a lot. I made the point that if this law was enforced fairly, a lot of women would end up in jail. A french lawyer came on to talk about how the law is written so that men would be included-- that is, a man could also bring charges against his wife if she was emotionally abusive. I pointed out that this sounded good legally but wondered if it would work out this way in practice. How many women would really end up in jail? A man from Kenya heard what I said about men and stated that since women were more expressive, they might end up being the ones charged. It was really interesting to hear perspectives from around the world.

More Serial Killers.....

on Biography. This one is a French serial killer by the name of Michael Fourniret. You can watch me on this show as an expert tonight, Friday, December 18 @ 8 pm ET on the Biography channel. Here is a description of the show:

He's known worldwide as the "Ogre of the Ardennes." Frenchman Michel Fourniret's exploits terrorized Europe in the 1980s and '90s as he kidnapped, raped and murdered nine young women in a reign of terror across France and Belgium. When he attempted to kidnap his 10th victim, his wife refused to conceal his sickness any longer. She went to authorities. Fourniret was arrested, convicted and sentenced to life in prison where he remains today.

Serial Killers on Biography

If you get the Biography channel on cable, you can watch me as an expert on a show about serial killer Robert Pickton, a pig farmer charged with killing 27 women in Canada. Here is the description:

Between 1995 and 2001, serial killer Robert "Willie" Pickton killed at least six Canadian women. All the women were known drug addicts or prostitutes from "Low Track"--Vancouver's gritty Downtown Eastside neighborhood. Pickton picked up his victims from the street and took them back to his pig farm in Port Coquitlam. There, Pickton would strangle or shoot each woman before mercilessly cutting her up in his slaughterhouse. By the time police caught up with Pickton, more than sixty women were missing from Low Track. After the most extensive forensic investigation in Canadian history, Pickton was charged with murdering 27 women. He was finally convicted on six counts of second-degree murder. He is currently appealing those charges, and is yet to stand trial for a further 20 murders.

The show airs at 8:00 eastern time tonight, Dec. llth.

Kids and pop culture, men's issues and domestic violence

I talked about all of these issues today on George Korda's show "State Your Case" on NewsTalk 100 WNOX in Knoxville from 12:00 until 1:00. Callers called in to talk about the unfairness of the courts, their divorce and/or the treatment of men in the media. It made for an interesting afternoon and made me realize how many more resources are needed out there to provide men with a platform for some of their concerns.

Women behind Bars on WE

I was on an episode of "Women behind Bars" on WE (Women's Entertainment) last night that featured the story of Natasha Cornett, the teen who was part of the Lillelid murder and in my documentary Six. I thought they did a very nice job of telling several sides of the story from the perspective of experts, law enforcement and Cornett herself. You can watch the episode if you are a night owl (or have insomnia) again tonight at 2 AM eastern. For those who have more normal hours, it airs at other times noted here.

David Weigel at the Washington Independent interviewed me for an article on "going John Galt":

”Do you ever wonder,” wrote Dr. Helen Smith, “after dealing with all that is going on with the economy and the upcoming election, if it’s getting to be time to ‘go John Galt?’”

It is October 12, 2008 and inspired by Barack Obama’s curbside debate with Joe the Plumber — and the likelihood of his election to the presidency — Smith, a forensic psychologist in Knoxville, Tenn., was tossing the readers of her blog a serious question. It had been years since she had read “Atlas Shrugged.” “I had to refresh my memory with the Cliffs Notes,” she said on Thursday in an interview. But the themes of Ayn Rand’s 1957 novel, and the themes of the climactic 40-page speech by self-imposed social outcast “John Galt”, had stuck with her.

The themes had stuck with her readers, too....

Serial Killer Shows on Biography

If you are intestested in learning more about serial killers, The Biography Channel is running a series of shows starting this week. I appear as one of the experts on four of the shows.

The first of those, on serial killer Jerome Brudos, airs tonight, Friday (Jan. 23rd) at 8 pm ET and runs again on Saturday (Jan.24th) at midnight. Here is a description of the show:

His mother had wanted a girl, an innocent enough disappointment. However, in Jerome Brudos' case, it somehow spiraled out of control first into a fetish and then into murder. As a teenager, he would assault women, stealing their shoes. By the time he was a married adult living in suburban Portland, his criminal activities had advanced. Over a fifteen month period Brudos killed four times, starting with a woman who had come to his house selling door-to-door. When he was captured he was found hiding under blankets while his wife drove the family car. Searches of the Brudos' home turned up women's clothing and shoes in Jerome's sizes. He died in prison in 2006 where he had continued to receive women's shoe catalogs.

Live Through This

Fuse TV has a new series called Live Through This about rock stars who have bad things happen to them. The show "takes a look at some of your favorite musicians and their heroic tales of recovery."

I was interviewed for the pilot show that featured Nikki Sixx from Motley Crue--remember them, 1980's, "Smoking in the Boys Room?" In the show, Sixx talks about the addiction problems that almost killed him. Since getting clean, Sixx is now working with Covenant House California to raise awareness of addiction in youth. He is also the author of a new book, The Heroin Diaries: A Year in the Life of a Shattered Rock Star and has released a new CD, The Heroin Diaries Soundtrack.

The next episode airs on Fuse TV on Sunday, March 2nd at 2:00 pm Eastern.
