Frog is a very generic term encompassing a huge subset of amphibians from the taxonomic order Anura. Like the related toads, frogs have large heads, compact bodies, webbed feet, and powerful long hind legs for leaping and swimming. Frogs are best distinguished from toads by their smoother skin and preference for water.
Frog trivia[edit]
- Frogs are notable for their metamorphic life cycle, which begins as a fish-like tadpole or pollywog, which is the first stage.
- The tree frogs have sticky pads on their toes for climbing and are among the smallest bony vertebrates on earth.
- Some frogs, such as poison dart frogs, can secrete a powerful poison from their skin which can disable a man, to say nothing of any snake or other predator.
- A well-known old wives' tale involving frogs states that handling frogs causes warts, though this is of course far from scientific. It is actually caused by the human papillomavirus.
Frogs as characters[edit]
Because they lack a tail, frogs are seldom seen in furry circles, but they are not entirely unknown. Perhaps the best known frog character is Kermit the Frog, one of Jim Henson's Muppet characters, voiced originally by Henson himself.
