Frostgrave: Cheap Pyramids

After the success of my candlestick-turned-columns I went back to the charity shop to see what else I could make into Frostgrave scenery. It didn't take me long to find these priced £5 for all 4. They are made from soapstone and have been hand carved (presumably a souvenir from a trip to Egypt). I didn't bother painting them as I would have had to pick out all the detail of the hieroglyphics, which seemed like a waste of time, so I just based them and added snow. I think they will be great for breaking up line of sight. 

Frostgrave: The Titan's Skull!

No one is quite sure what the Titan Skull is- Is it really the skull of a colossal giant, or even a god, as some tales claim? Is it an artefact of great power? Or is it nothing more that a folly made by some mad wizard to impress his neighbours?...none can say, but the Titan's skull, as it has become known by the adventurers in Frostgrave, is something of a land mark in the frozen ruins- the closest thing in the ruins to a tourist attraction. 

The skull was bought in a pet shop for £4. I didn't bother to paint it as the paint job was rather good. I just added a base, the snow and the icicles. 

This next piece I found in a box of half finished scenery I made. I don't even recall making it- it looks like I made it from offcuts of blue foam. I finished it off and added snow- a nice useful ruined building- I think I might make some more as it was very easy to do. 

Frostgrave: Bargin Terrain

Last week I walked past an Oxfam charity shop and, entirely on a whim, through I would pop in and look at the ornaments for something I could use in Frostgrave. I was looking for a little statue, perhaps a dragon or a knight, but what I found were a pair of resin candlestick holders. They were SO ugly it beggars belief that anyone would have bought them in the first place. I think the staff at the charity shop must have thought I was half mad because as soon as I saw them I knew I had to have them. They were painted red and gold, and had multicoloured plastic jewels glued to them- tacky beyond belief. 

Once I got home I had a rummage through my bits box and found a couple of  suitable figures to adorn the candlesticks- in this case two old GW wizards I had had in my lead pile for more years than I care to remember. These wizards are lovely sculpts but alas both of them had their staffs broken so had no eBay value and so, after some soul-searching, I glued then to the candlesticks and sprayed them black. 

These pictures show the end results: a quick and easy paint job; some white fine surface plaster for snow and some plastic icicles from a model railway shop and the tacky tat was transformed into two Frostgrave monuments! 

And the cost for this transformation...£1.98.

Frostgrave: A Rat Familar

One of the things I love about painting figure for Frostgrave is that you can reuse just  about any fantasy figure for you war-band., I bought this figure off a seller at the West Midlands Military Show but unfortunately I can't for the life of me remember who made it, which is a shame because it is a cool figure. I am not sure what it will be in Frost Grave (if it features at all) but it cheered me up to paint it so I don't care. It stands (sits? ) about a cm tall, pulse the head dress. 

Frostgrave: The Frost Wrath

Here is another wandering monster for Frost Grave- This one is a Frost Wrath (produced by Northstar).

I painted it by by adding increasing amount of ice blue paint (instead the bone colour I usually use to highlight) to the grey as I highlighted it, carefully blending the layers together- this simple trick gave the figure a nice cold feel without being too obvious. 

Frostgrave Terrain

I bought these Reaper Bones scenic pieces from the West Midlands Military Show from the Twisted Pinnacle stall. They will be used as scatter terrain to liven up my Frostgrave board. The magic circle was included in a pack of two cultists. the base and pentagram were details added by me. The sarcophagus was in a pack on its own (£2.20). Fun to paint and hopefully they will look nice on a Frostgrave board. 

Frostgrave Hirelings

Three more hirelings for my Frostgrave Wizards. The first is an infantryman. He is a GW Militiaman with Frostgrave soldiers arms. 

Next is an Apothecary made from a GW Warhammer artilleryman. I added flames to make the fuse into a torch, but otherwise haven't messed about with him much. I don't normally bother painting eyebrows but this guy needed big bushy eyebrows. 

Finally this knight was a leftover from an ancient Celt army I have been working on- he is by Crusader Miniatures and hasn't been converted.

Frostgrave: Beasty and Soldier

I can't remember where I got this from but it is a sabre-toothed tiger painted up as a Snow Tiger. It could be a proxy for the Snow Leopard in the wandering monsters table, or even serve as an exotic war-dog for a wizard. 

This Frostgrave plastic has a shield taken from a GW Ogre Kingdoms sprue. It is split and has been crudely bolted back together with metals strips. I like to think that this guy used to be a humble thug, but found (or stole) some leather armour and salvaged this broken shield and is trying to hire himself out as a man-at-arms for more money. Good luck to him...it's good to try to better yourself. 

Frostgrave: Apprentice Wizards

I have just finished work on my two wizards apprentices which means I am ready to start gaming (I know there has been a delay, but I am back on track now!). I hope you like them.

 

Frostgrave Barbarian

Sven is a Northern Barbarian and an axe for hire in Frostgrave. He doesn't seem effected by the freezing temperatures despite he lack of suitable attire. It is said that the men of his tribe have the blood of frost giants running in their veins. 

This is another Heresy figure- two parts this time but well enough cast to go together without too much fuss. he is huge too- standing head and shoulders above the Heresy knight I painted- he not different scale- just huge!

Frostgrave: Templar Knight

 Here is another addition to my growing Frostgrave bands - a Templar- with his two handed sword and heavy armour. This figure was from Heresy and was lovely to paint. I have a special love of single piece miniatures (as oppressed to multi-part moulding) so I was really pleased to see when this one arrived that All I had to do was stick it on it's base and paint it. 

I just need to add some snow to his base with white plaster filler and he will be good to go off on his adventures. 

Frostgrave: Barbarian and Hedge Knight

Here are two more figures for my Frostgrave warbands. The barbarian girl is from Copplestone with a Frostgrave plastic axe. The hedge knight is made from a Frostgrave plastic kit with Green Stuff chain-mail sleeves. 

my wife thinks the Barbarian will get cold in Frostgrave, but I told her northern girls are built of sterner stuff that the softy southerners. 

Frostgrave Enchanter

Vulcan Waylendsen the Enchanter is getting ready to journey to the Frozen City of Frostgrave to learn it's arcane secrets.

Frostgrave: First Wizard

My first Frostgrave wizard is Ballatine Gul, a dastardly necromancer venturing into the Frozen City to recover unspeakable tomes and artefacts.

Frostgave treasure and a Treasure-hunter

This treasure marker and candle sticks were made from Reaper Bones accessories set. The treasure hunter is from a Game Workshop Mordhiem kit with a Frostgrave arm (not my best pose but it will do to fill the ranks)

Frostgrave: Some Bits and Bobs

Here are a few bits and pieces I have been working on for Frostgrave. This snake statue was from a pet shop. It has been repainted by me, and the snow has been added using white paint and fine plaster filler. 

This is a Ranger made from the Frostgrave Soldier kit with a Games Workshop High Elf bow on his back and some Green Stuff bags and pouches. 

 These statues were made from some unwanted Gripping Beast ancient Germans. The bases were made from MDF bases from Warbases. 

Frostgrave: Thieves in the Temple

Two more Frostgrave Adventurers- these ones more shady than heroic. The fist thief is made form the Frostgrave Solders kit and the second one is a conversion based on a GW militiaman, with a few minor alterations and some Green Stuff. 

Frostgrave: The Sneaky and the Brave

Two more Frostgrave adventurers here. A sneaky back-stabbing thief. Thieves have always been my favourite characters in D&D. This one's head and body are from the Frostgrave Soldiers box set and the arms are from the GW milita box set. The sword has been cut down into a knife, perfect for stealthy kills or for slitting purses. 

A leather armour-clad man at arms made form a GW Empire Militiaman and a shield from a Conquest Miniatures Norman.

Two more Frostgrave soldiers clash while exploring the frozen ruins. The one on the left is from the Frostgrave Soldiers box. The other is a kit-bash from a Games Workshop Empire militia figure with shield and head from a Conquest Miniatures Norman knight. Other details were added with Green Stuff. 

Frostgrave: Two Thugs and a Dog

Here is the start of my Adventurers for Frostgrave. The lowest in the pecking order- two thugs with their faithful dog. Apologies for the poor picture on the second thug but the light wasn't great. The thugs are from the plastic Frostgrave Soldiers kit and the dog is an old Mordhiem hound from Games Workshop.
