Ganja Girls additional reinforcements

Final painting points for 2015.  I finished these up Weds night and epoxied them to their bases so had to wait to take pics.  Ended up being that I just painted up the treewoman and the prone/stunned markers.  Will make a separate year end/looking forward post with my thoughts on painting this year.
for use when playing as wood elves
5 for the treewoman and 1 each for the markers is 7 more painting points. I would have preferred to have painted the model for bertha bigfist seeing as how I'll be using the team as Amazons but I haven't been able to find it.

Ganja Girl reinforcements

You may or may not be aware, but last year my buddy Grant and I had a competition where we both took the same blood bowl race to tournaments to see who could do best.

Grant won last year, though to be fair lizardmen were awesome for both of us (He won the first tournament we played, I came 4th.  Then I won his tournament in my next try)

In 2016 the plan is we are both going to use amazons until someone wins a tournament (high hopes)
As such I needed the final blitzer painted for sure, and since I was pulling them out and they are literally just basecoat tabletop quality I got the other thrower, catcher, 2 linemen and roxanna and zara painted too.

7 painting points. If I ever do any more for this team and decide roxanna and zara deserve more attention, I'll add points then.
L-R: thrower, roxanna, blitzer, zara, catcher, lino, lino

Lakeside Cup 2013 (the last incarnation), result = Wet Paper Bag

the crew
FYI - Once posted I am going to be updating the date back in time so this fits along better in terms of when the tournament actually happened.  Just a disclaimer in case it ends up being confusing.  This was the final time Peter would be running this incarnation of the Lakeside Cup, and having missed it for 2 previous years I was not going to miss out.  Here is the NAF thread.

A quick recap since it was so long ago and I just needed to make sure I posted up something.  A quick pic of each game, I will try to add something about each and some notes about my roster, skill upgrades and luck below.

0-1 loss vs. Mark H. (Chaos Dwarves)
attempting to crowd push his bull centaur lost me my chance to score a TD.
nice t-shirt eh?
1-1 tie vs. Colin (Chaos Dwarves)
there is something strange about playing Colin, we always seem to tie.
playing outside was much nicer than downstairs
3-2 win vs. Austin (Skaven)
was lucky to win this one - Austin's dice were terrible all game.
Austin looks surprised
0-2 loss vs. Ryan (Orc)
getting schooled is how I remember this match.
game four day one I just wanted it over
2-0 win vs. Gord (Necromantic)
dice were perfect for me in this game
sorry no pic
0-2 loss vs. Leathan (Lizardmen)
IIRC I was under the cosh from the get go due to a thrown rock ???
no luck vs. Leathan this time

I think my main problem was trying to make my roster/skills too "perfect" or "combo-ish".  One berserker I gave mighty blow & piling on and I don't think he caused a casualty all tournament.  I did like my wrestle/tackle ulfwerener, but only having 1 meant I was low on frenzy and strength. I gave +ST and +AG to my runner, but I shouldn't have made him my ball carrier, he ended up hiding in cages too much.

In the end, I finished on the winning side - though I didn't have too much to do with that.  It was nice for the West to finally win after several years of being the Easts whipping boys.  Additionally I picked up an individuals trophy - though not one to be proud of...
wet paper bag trophy
The Wet Paper Bag - that I couldn't fight my way out of - this was for least casualties caused and is particularly embarrassing having a berserker on my roster with mighty blow & piling on. :(

Zlurpeebowl VIII - result = 38/60

#WHUTUPSHUN

Sorry for how long this has taken me to put together - have been super busy lately and I wanted to really give a summary of the whole weekend because Xtreme (@XtremeBBer) really put a proper "weekend" of fun together.

pre-party

The canucks made excellent time driving down to Naptown, I think we arrived around 5ish.  Checked in at the lake house which turned out to be plenty big enough for 8 guys (they mentioned we might be cramped but the closets were big enough to hold our an air mattress - and Alex (@alexmatusiak) did sleep in the closet hoping for a bit of quiet, though it didn't work out that way as Hickling stayed up watching one of the american pie movies.

So once we dropped our stuff off, we headed over to Xtreme's place which was about a 20 minute drive.  Got there and Hickling immediately dove into a game of the BB team manager, while the rest of us hung around waiting for our beer to get cold.  Thankfully Sol and the mad dawgs showed up with a cooler and shared the wealth.  This party was a huge blast, everyone just hanging out and drinking, we all played silly games like rat ogre bowl (which Alex won) and space bowl (which Alex's team won - even despite my terrible efforts as the hive mind)
spacebowl broodlord vs. sergeant - that's me pointing!
hive mind high five! me, alex, randroid, sarge

DAY 1

Game 1 vs. Jeff (@ZootSuitJeff) 2-0 win

Jeff was one of the 'mericans crashing with the canucks at the little lake house we rented.  Appropriate we got to play each other!  Jeff brought a FTLOTG (and was eventual FTLOTG champion) counts as lizardmen team (no Saurus!) that was comprised of a giant robot for the kroxigor and a bunch of tiny robots for the skinks.  Very cool looking team.
game 1
In the first half I won the coin toss and chose to kick.  I used Boomer right away hoping it would force Jeff to try to score early.  Didn't work out that way and Boomer didn't have much effect as his skinks were so spread out - but I did manage to nip the ball and score late in the half.  Second half Jeff played a brilliant drive that very nearly succeeded in scoring down one flank, but fortune wasn't with him and he lost possession late (bit hazy now but I think it was a failed dodge or gfi) and even though I was planning to _not_ win by a lot (an early big win will have you playing stronger opponents sooner!) in the end I just tried to make a late scoring drive and ended up scoring a second touchdown without even using a reroll.  Should've saved some of that luck for later games!

Game 2 vs. Al 1-0 win

Al was _originally_ going to crash with us, but fortunately a cancellation let him stay in the house with the other mad dawgs whose team he was on, and was travelling with.  I'm sure that was nicer in the end for him.  Al also did a great job with the grill saturday night at the live after zlurp party.  He was the second lizardmen team I played, although he did have saurii (sp?).
game 2
Again I kicked to Al and used Boomer immediately.  Boomer had a much better impact in this game - I think it frustrated Al quite a bit.  The game was definitely a learning experience for Al, I'm not sure he was very familiar with the dangers of frenzy.  I warned him about being near the sidelines but I think the second hit threw him for a loop.  Fortunately for him the crowd only KO'd his tackle saurus.  Quite a back and forth game, where I managed to pull out a 1-0 win.  I think it wasn't until the second half that I scored but don't quote me on that, after the pre-party at Xtreme's Friday night the games from day one are tough to recall!

At the same time, Alex and Jonny P were playing right next to us, here's Jonny's #1 absolute favourite pic from the entire weekend.  Alex's Krox looming over his blitzer (or linewoman or whatever, ther're all blodgers - who cares!!)
NOM NOM

Game 3 vs. Tom 1-2 loss

Angry Tom! Septuple Burger Buddy Award winner! THE Tomcat Rummery.

I have played Tom twice before, and with a win and a draw under my belt I figured a bit of smack talk was in order.  He got his revenge in this game but the look on his face was priceless!!  Tom is part of the mad dawgs crew and ended up winning Zlurpeebowl!  He came in 2nd for the RPS tournament, but he cheated me by waiting to see what I chose first! ;)  He was also the 3rd lizardmen team in a row I faced.
game 3
Made my first big mistake of the day here.  I won the coin toss and should have kicked, instead I chose to receive hoping to really cash in on Boomer, but it ended up costing me as Boomer caused a couple turnovers with fumbles.  AV7 started to cost me as well.  This was a very fun game as Tom and I traded smack talk the whole time.  Unfortunately as he was generally doing well (and there were young children nearby) didn't manage to drag out a proper Angry Tom performance but it was still a blast.  We both scored in the first half, and then in the second I couldn't hold him as the casualties started to mount.
guessing I just insulted Tom in this pic
waiting for retaliation??

Game 4 vs. Ezzard 1-2 loss

Ezzard is another American who crashed with us, so throughout day 1 I basically played people I've been connected to somehow, with Tom the only one I'd previously played - that's always nice! I felt for the poor guy, his allergies were going crazy and I am usually the same, but my allergies didn't bother me at all in the States, weird!
game 4
YAY not playing lizardmen! BOO playing guardspam dwarves! Double BOO, he took Boomer too so neither can use him!!  Made another huge mistake in choosing to kick to him, that's what I wanted to do if I had Boomer, so once I lost Boomer I should have immediately realized that would be suicide.  AND it was.  I think Ezzard got like 7 casualties against me but I still managed to score a TD and I think if I had received it could've been a different game.  Not surprised I made this mistake though as by game 4 of day 1 your mental fortitude is really what is tested the most.  Ezzard won 2-1 and he ended up winning Most Casualties (you're welcome!)

live after zlurp party

Well this was a BLAST.  Definitely the highlight of the weekend, if you have listened to Episode 36 of Zlurpcast you have already heard all the best stuff.  I missed hearing Hickling's interview live as I was scarfing down food, but I joined the crowd just as Jeff was doing his "Go For It". It's always a blast chatting with Main Guy and Other Guy, and I had fun doing my own "Go For It" - especially because Jonny just wouldn't give up until I got a skill roll and (as it had all night) giving away SPP just bugs Bryan!  I'm sure if you are reading this you've listened, but as a recap I started as an Orc blitzer and with a few "correct" answers ended up with 6SPP and took Mighty Blow as my first skill, time to crack a few skulls!
mustard vs. ketchup!
There were tons of games and such going on, so much that it was impossible to follow everything that was happening.  I think we called it quits sometime around 1am to head back to the lake house for a bit of sleep before the second day.  Thankfully for us, our location was much closer to the venue than everyone else, so we were able to sleep in quite a bit even though we had to be all packed up before we left.  The folks at Indy Lakes were super nice (if you are ever there, say hi to James for me!) and I wouldn't hesitate to go back even though it's mainly for fishing, it was just overall super convenient.  Next year will probably try to do a bit more planning so we can just eat breakfast there, since we really barely used the facilities - it even had laundry!

DAY 2

Game 5 vs. Josh 0-1 loss

Josh was part of the OWFUL crew, and was the guy who told the hilarious Jake Lloyd selling weed story on Zlurpcast Episode 36.  A really great guy and we had a super epic game.  This was easily my most fun game of the tournament - which always says a lot when you lose!
game 5
I chose to receive and used Boomer and right away was super pumped as the kickoff result was "Get the Ref!" giving me a bribe to attempt to keep Boomer around for both drives!!  KICK ASS I thought.  Boomer really tore into Josh's orcs, mostly just knocking them down - however did get the odd KO here and there.  In the end, I should have just tried to dodge away on my turn 8 with a reroll to score, but instead I tried to blitz his player off and had to burn the reroll on a gfi in the process.  Then the blitz didn't knock his player down so I had to dodge anyways (stupid!) and of course I failed.  So we went in at halftime with no score.  To make matters worse I rolled a 1 for my bribe, so I didn't get to keep Boomer.  NOOOOOOoooooooo.  Fought tooth and nail to keep Josh from scoring, but he managed to score on the last turn of the game, where he failed his catch roll from a hand off and the game literally came down to a single 3+ roll.  He made it and deservedly won the game 1-0.

Game 6 GRUDGE MATCH vs. (@GDubToThaFeetUp) aka Jonny P (@jp4media) 1-1 draw

A man needing no introduction.  If you don't know who Jonny P is - I don't understand why you have read this far through this post!  Looks pretty soft in this pic eh???
game 6 vs. "soft" jonny
"I put dump off in dis bag" - your face says it all main guy
Another pretty epic game, though mostly for Jonny!  Boomer again was a force to be reckoned with since Jonny's entire amazon team were blodgers!  Really helped to knock his team down, though I gotta say I also rolled a fair amount of open POWs as well on my drive.  I scored late but didn't really do enough damage to Jonny's team.

Second half JP made a nice push and tied the game up, then after kicking to me again - all of a sudden he started breaking armour like nobody's business around turn 5-6 and in two turns he had KO'd 3-4 and CAS'd another 2-3.  It was brutal!! In the end I had like 2 players on the pitch, and all I could do was draw his players close, then run up the field and throw it as far as was safe to do and pray to not fumble.  I managed it and JP couldn't manage to score with his chance so the game ended 1-1.
check out the beating I took!
GRUDGE....REMAINS

Awards

The "Eh" Team did pretty well overall..  in fact much better than anyone (even Xtreme) thought because after the fact I determined that we actually should have won "Best Team"!!! This was mainly due to the bonuses from Alex winning best appearance for his lizardmen team (this was what Bryan forgot) and for Hickling being on a top table in the final round.  At the event it went to the Legion of Boom from Wisconsin - so we will actually be co-champions.  Waiting to hear from Xtreme about possible prizes and I know we are getting certificates!  There's a blurb about this in Zlurpcast Episode 36 which is pretty funny!

Hickling ended up with 3rd place.  If he won his last game he would have won the tournament.  He was the only player to beat Tom (who won, going 5-1) - the results list shows him in 4th, but basically the top 2 tables in the last round make up who places 1-4th, so even though Petre won his last game (the last American who stayed with us at the lake house) and leapfrogged him, Mark still took 3rd.  As you can see he spent a lot of time on the top tables!  PS. This is the Mark they called "Chops" on Zlurpcast Episode 36.

All in all this was probably the most amazing blood bowl tournament experience I've had.  I know The "Eh" Team will be back!!

Orion Cup 2012 - result = 4th

Wow, haven't posted since April 28th!  My apologies, have just had a lot going on and blogging has taken a backseat to everything else.  Here's a delayed posting about the first blood bowl tournament I played in back in June, the Orion Cup.

I brought a very similar Norse roster to my planned Zlurpeebowl roster, it had no Yhetee but did include Boomer Eziasson.

Game 1 vs. Anthony

This was a tight game, first half boomer kept the dwarves on their asses, but a nice play from Anthony put a tackle zone on my ball carrier, and I ended up having to burn my reroll on a failed GFI early in my last turn which meant when I needed it for a failed dodge it wasn't available.  Failed to score on my drive had me worried, went in at HT 0-0.

Second half I managed to do a good job tying up Anthony in the middle of the field and as time started ticking away and we had to finish - he decided to go for a 5+ dodge with reroll to get out of my "cage" (I had 3 players surrounding his ball carrier) which failed and the ball landed in my players hands - that bit of fortune helped me to score in the last turn of the game for a lucky 1-0 win.

Game 2 vs. Colin R.

Another tight game, Norse vs Norse.  I remember it being back and forth quite a bit but am starting to forget some details.  What I do remember is Colin's dice not being great and his "Samsquanch" (hehe) failing a number of wild animal rolls - along with some unfortunate block dice results.  This game ended 1-0 in my favour as well.

Game 3 vs. Kolja

Every game finished 1-0 for me this tournament.  This time I was on the receiving end.  I did manage to keep his skaven from scoring for something like 12-13 turns of the game, but late in the second half he pulled off some nice plays with his gutter runners to score and I just didn't have time to get one back.  I think I misplayed boomer in this game - I used him on my offensive drive (which works better vs. bashy teams IMO) but in this game I should have saved him for a defensive drive, since the skaven were too spread out when defending to take much advantage.

I finished in 4th place - a fun little one day tournament and some good practice for zlurpeebowl.  Everyone got prizes too which was nice.

Challenge of Q'ermitt 2012, Result = best ever (2 day) tournament result!

You can find the rulespack for Challenge of Q'ermitt HERE.  I'm bothering to link it because every pitch has it's own special rules so to make sense of some of the reports, you may want to download it.

My final starting roster was;
Snow Troll - mighty blow
2x Ulfwereners - block
2x Berserkers - 1 guard, 1 unskilled
Thrower - leader
Runner - dodge
4x Lineman
Boomerette
2 Rerolls

Day 1
Game 1 vs. Greg
Me vs. Greg on the Mordheim pitch
Greg had dwarves - it was his first time playing dwarves and my first time playing norse!  We played on the Mordheim pitch.

I received the kick, first turn of the game I casualtied a dwarf blocker, but he retaliated by AG busting my snow troll - d'oh!  I used Boomerette to great effect this game, constantly knocking down his dwarves (I only failed to affect 1 dwarf once, and the 1 time it could've affected my own player Greg rolled a 3!) taking my time to work my way downfield and score late.  I kicked to Greg for his turn 8 and unfortunately rolled a Get it off me! kick-off result, which saw one of my players (closest to sidelines) get dragged off the pitch by a giant tentacle!

Greg chose to play for the draw once he saw how the first couple turns of the second half played out.  He did a solid dwarf grind and scored on his turn 8, leaving me with a chance for a OTT, until for the kick-ff he rolled Witch Hunters! which seemed pretty pointless - the only difference from a Pitch Invasion is you don't get to add FAME, you are placed prone instead of stunned and the coach who rolls highest get's to roll the dice for both teams.

Game ended 1-1 tie, with 1-3 CAS to Greg. My FF went up, and I received 40K in winnings.

Game 2 vs. Eric
Me vs. Eric on the Chaos Dwarf pitch
Eric was playing high elves - I lucked out here as I guess the CAS different meant I was the person with a tie playing a person with a loss!  I had 2 journeymen for this game which meant I was stuck with only 11 players - this meant no matter what I was starting the 2nd half with only 10 players since Boomerette is a secret weapon. We played on the Chaos Dwarf pitch which meant it costs an extra point of MV to stand up due to how riddled the pitch is with craters, etc.

I won +2 FAME and Eric won the coin toss, he elected to receive and I believe the kick-off result was Fire in the hole! - ironic because I already had a bombardier on the pitch but with +2 FAME I won the roll and one of his players (randomly selected) was hit with a bomb, KO'ing a catcher immediately!  Eric aggressively tried to score quickly (probably hoping to get my secret weapon kicked out early) but it unfortunately didn't go his way, it just left his ball carrier too exposed.  I think he may also have been confused as it was his blitzers who had both block/dodge, while his catchers (as the one carrying the ball) had only block.  I gained possession and then because I had Boomerette had to be sure to stall this half to get the most out of her.  Between that, crowd surfs and just a bunch of block/frenzy, Eric only had 4 players to start the 2nd half.  I scored on turn 8 with my unskilled berserker (neting me an improvement roll).

At which point he had to kick to me!  It wasn't too hard to keep his 4 players knocked down, so I hurried and scored with a lineman.  He got another KO back, so for the next drive setup with 5 players, but I still had an overwhelming numbers advantage and won the ball back, scoring again with the same lineman to ensure an improvement roll.  There was 1 final turn for Eric to attempt to even up the casualties, but unfortunately I rolled a Volcanic Eruption! kick-off result, which didn't harm anyone but by delaying the game d3 turns effectively ended the game.

Final score was 3-0 win, with 2-0 CAS to me.  My berserker skilled up and I chose Mighty Blow.  I also got a lineman skilled up and I chose Tackle.  My FF went up again and I picked up 80K for winnings (yay +2 FAME) so I purchased a 2nd runner.

Game 3 vs. Alex
Alex vs. Me on the Necrotic Fairy Tale pitch
I was now on the top table, playing Alex with his amazons (with Roxanna Darknail!) and we played on the Necrotic Fairy Tale pitch. Alex had 2 wins under his belt - I was in for a tough matchup.  None of this pitches special rules came into play unless you rolled that kick-off result, which never happened so it was probably the closest thing to a normal game of blood bowl I had all weekend.

Once again I won +2 FAME (second game in a row) and this time I won the coin toss electing to receive, the kick-off was nothing out of the ordinary - I think it was quick snap.  My bash game started a bit slow, and I had to be really careful with the ball due to Roxanna - so I just kept my thrower back and tried to do some damage.  Alex did the best out of anyone so far at keeping Boomerette occupied so I couldn't just toss bombs all the time.  I did KO my own berserker with one bomb, but as I knocked down 4 of his players with one getting KO'd it wasn't the end of the world.  Then all of a sudden around turn 4, my dice got super hot and by the end of my drive I had ST busted one of his players and killed 2 others outright! (Would've been 3 kills, but he apothecaried one blitzer with guard to the ST bust).  There were some nervy moments as I was attempting to keep Roxanna on the ground with fouls near the LOS, but in his turn 7, he got up, dodged/leaped out of the surrounding players and knocked down my ball carrier, but fortune favoured me and I managed to pickup the ball and score on turn 8.  He tried to retaliate with some damage on his turn 8 but couldn't.

Now I had to kick to him in the second half and try to stop him from scoring.  He got the ball with Roxanna and despite my best attempts was able to keep her standing and holding the ball.  He caused a Badly Hurt CAS during his drive but I retaliated with another DEATH! Total of 3 deaths & 1 ST bust for this game.  I did put enough pressure on him that he had to score early and it gave me an opportunity to score a winning TD.  Unfortunately as I got close I needed to pass instead of hand off and my thrower (who was poor at passing all tournament) fumbled the ball and gave Alex the tie.

Final score was 1-1 tie, with 4-1 CAS to me.  My berserker with Guard skilled up and I selected Stand Firm, my FF went up and I received 60K in winnings.

Day 2
Game 4 vs. Peter
Me vs. Pete on the Norse pitch
Start of day 2 saw me facing off against Peter and his vampires on the Norse pitch (yea, home field advantage!).  Pete had Count Luthor, 2 vampires with block & dodge and had just purchased a rookie vampire.

Again I got +2 FAME (3rd game in a row!!) and the weather was Strong Winds with the scatter direction directly to Pete's right/my left.  He won the coin toss and chose to receive.  The kick-off result was changing weather and the Strong Winds turned into a Blizzard - meaning GFI failed on 1 or 2 and only quick or short passes could be attempted.  Pete got off to an unfortunate start, failing his first bloodlust (badly hurting a thrall) and needing to burn a reroll on turn 1.  This continued on turn 2, failing a bloodlust (stunning a thrall) and needing to spend another reroll.  On turn 3 he finally didn't fail a bloodlust but he then had to use his last reroll.  All 3 rerolls gone by turn 3.  He also made a crucial mistake - thinking with a player preventing a straight push I couldn't crowd surf his ball carrier - but he forgot due to the square away from the end zone, any frenzier would have a chance to get in between them.  So a vampire got crowdsurfed (badly hurt) and when the ball was thrown back in his other vampire failed to catch it.  I surrounded the ball and even though he was able to retrieve it, I'd been causing so much damage to his thralls and another vampire that he was already losing the war of attrition quite badly.  He got the ball into Count Luthor's hands but I surrounded him and managed to get the ball off him.  I kept him on the ground through fouls and I also killed one of his skilled vampires outright but he managed to regenerate him.  I scored on the last turn of the first half with my thrower (I had no rerolls left so it was too risky to attempt to get the SPP with another piece)

For the second half, Pete kicked to me, and rolled a Trial of Manhood kick-off result, with a norse hooligan running onto the pitch from his end zone.  I worked my way forwards quickly since he only had 4 players to work with, which meant the hooligan blitzed me instead of one of Pete's players, but I made sure it was an Ulfwerener so the block dice choice was in my hands and all he got was a push.  I kept the pressure on his vampires but was unable to hurt Count Luthor at all (whoever kills star players in this tournament get's a little tombstone trophy with that star players' name on it) so I scored quickly with my new runner.  Setup and kicked to Pete who now had 5 players, but I rolled a Wrath of Koli kick-off result and Pete lost the die roll and 3 of his 5 players started the drive stunned!  With just 2 pieces available it was pretty easy to knock the ball loose and score again with the same runner to ensure an upgrade.  I had 2 turns to try to score one more time, and the opportunity presented itself but my thrower again contrived to mess things up and fumbled the ball again (second game in a row, 1 reroll 1 - though with my luck so far it was hard to complain!)

Final score was 3-0 win, with 4-0 CAS to me.  I gave my second runner dodge as well, my FF went up and I received 90K in winnings (best you can ever get!) and with game 5 being the final game I spent as much as I could, buying an extra reroll and an extra lineman.

Game 5 vs. Rob
Rob vs. Me on the Goblin Swamp pitch
In the final game, I was sitting in 4th place - with 2 wins, 2 ties at 8 points and I played Rob who was in 2nd place (he had 3 wins, 1 loss but had already played Alex who was in 1st with 3 wins, 1 tie) while Laurent (also 3 wins, 1 loss) in 3rd played Alex.  Rob was playing dwarves and we played on the Goblin Swamp pitch - with which Rob has some unfortunate history from previous years.  The rules are that crocodiles can only come out of a plank section (which leaves the LOS clear of holes that players can be pushed into, since it is an island) but his opponent (Laurent) didn't notice so there were holes on the LOS which he kept pushing Robs players into (this was years ago).  So due to this I made sure to read the rules closely - which meant I felt obliged to point out that there are NO refs on the pitch, which basically meant Rob got to keep his deathroller for the entire game.  OUCH! (I got to keep Boomerette too, but still!)

I won the FAME, I thought I got +2 for the 4th time when Rob rolled snake eyes, but I missed by 1 or 2.  The weather was nice and Rob won the coin toss, choosing to receive.  So in trying to mess with Rob, I called out for a Croc Attack! kick-off result and got it!  Unfortunately the croc attacked MY Ulfwerener and was KO'd, leaving a hole in my side of the pitch.  Rob worked at a pretty standard dwarf grind, while I actually tried to do little to stop him while I worked at knocking down and fouling or bombing the deathroller.  I got close with a 10 armour roll once, but never much more than that.  He stalled near the end and took until his turn 8 to score.  My dice were definitely not hot in this game, failing lots of rolls of just about every type.  My only consolation was everytime Rob knocked one of my players down, the absolute best he got was a KO - until the last turn when he CAS'd my other Ulfwerener, but I used my apothecary and since 1 of the results was badly hurt he went back into my reserves.  He had also racked up 3 KO's to go with my Ulfwerener by the end of his drive.  My dice stayed cool and I rolled 1 of 4 KOs back, but by starting with 14 players I still had enough to attempt a OTT.  Rob rolled another Croc Attack! kick-off result and of course it KO'd another of my players - my thrower. Then my blitzer failed to dodge out of a tackle zone after the first hit of my turn 8 so that attempt was done quickly.

For the 2nd half, his kick-off result was Aaargh! My foot! and one of his players started prone.  I had again failed to roll more than 1 KO back (my thrower so at least I had my leader back) so I decided I had to play for the tie, and kept my thrower with the ball way back in my end until I was ready to go for a score.  A lot of my turns ended quickly due to lack of players and being stuck with 1 die blocks, but late I got a chance when my berserker rolled 2 die uphill vs his runner and got double kapow, then dodged away from his blitzer and was stood within scoring range.  Here's where I made the most crucial mistake of my entire tournament - a real learning experience which will hopefully stick with me and make me focus more.  I was throwing a long bomb with my thrower so the result might not have changed much, but I should have ensured he at least did not get a chance to intercept, because he rolled a 6 and intercepted my pass, allowing him to score a 2nd touchdown in the last turn of the game.  Over the last 2 turns I did get 2 CAS to even up that stat, but the extra touchdown gave him both the tournament overall win, as well as most TDs (yes, with dwarves, the one skaven player had a bad tournament overall, he only had 10 and this gave Rob 11 and Eric with high elves ended up with the spoon - again).

Final score was 0-2 loss, with 2-2 CAS.  I ended up in 5th place out of 16 - which for a 2 day tournament (ie. more than 4 games) is my best ever performance (both just in terms of actual ranking - I have scored 6th before) but also in comparing the # of players (this put me in top 32% of players and my previous best there was 7 of 18, which is top 39%).

I thought I had a chance for better with the tie, but after learning the other results - as soon as this game was not a win, 5th was the highest I could have gotten.  If I had won, I would have taken 2nd (first if the top table had tied) but either a tie or a loss put me in 5th as Mark won 4th with 3 wins, 2 losses.

Congratulations to all the winners, you can check out the final results here.  Challenge of Q'ermitt is always a fun tournament as there is so much crazyness going on anything can happen.

ps. As I headed home, with a mixture of elation at doing so well and a bit of frustration at the error that gave Rob the tournament (he most definitely still could've won - not sure about the other tiebreakers, but the second TD guaranteed it) I happened to be browsing through my blogroll, when I noticed that I had won a free Storm Raven from the talented (and generous) Joel of Mordian 7th. A very nice way to end the day!  Cheers to Joel and his blog is a highly recommended read!
