Helvick Head / Ceann Heilbhic (Irish)

Helvick is a small fishing
harbour, located at the mouth of Dungarvan Bay, protected by a breakwater in
the form of a sturdy pier.

The pier is a hive of activity when the fisherman
arrive in with their catch.

A place of breath taking beauty with its
sandstone cliffs as high as 70 metres above sea level, coastal walks and
seabird colonies. The best views can be seen from the cove or the cliff top.

While sea
watching a variety of sea life can be spotted. Seals, dolphins, basking
sharks, (I had a rather close encounter with basking sharks. Read about it here.),
whales, and on occasion killer whales have even been spotted.

For all the bird watchers out there, Helvick is a
must. It is listed as themost important seabird colony in the country and an Area of Special Protection. The cliffs lend themselves as the ideal nesting site.
