The Marathon

I always thought I would do a marathon one day, but wasn't doing anything to get there until last June when I couldn't run 2 miles straight.  I had stopped thinking about doing a marathon and had moved on to being a mom. Even training for a half marathon, the training schedules for a full marathon were overwhelming. I signed up for this December 31, hours before the price jumped even higher.  I was nervous if I could pull it off.

My favorite comment about running a marathon came from my mom.  "You should be glad you're running a marathon."  In many ways, I am glad like that I am running a marathon by just being healthy and able, but this was in reference to my brother Mike and his wife Summer were competing in a hike, bike and paddle excursion where you have to read a map and find your way to all these checkpoints on the same day as my marathon.  It took them nearly 13 hours to complete.

The weather was an answer to prayers.  It was supposed to rain, like 60-70% chance, and by morning it was down to 0% chance until 11 am and it didn't even rain then.  It was beautiful!  Overcast and nice.  I think it was in the 50's!  Pretty ideal!

I ate PB toast for breakfast and a s'mores pop tart right before.  I choked down a GU gel at 9 miles and had a baby food packet of fruit with a Power Bar logo at 15.  I also drank lots of Gatorade.  It is crazy how hungry you get, but all my snacks were enough even with the estimated 2576 calories burned (according to RunKeeper).
At the starting line

I started out waiting in line for a porta potty for like a half an hour, then gave up and tinkled by a tree in downtown DC. Half of the runners had already started, so it was only a crowd of about 10,000.  (If it starts this good, I wonder what else happens :) )  While waiting for the porta potty, one of the good tips offered was to not stop for a potty break, since your legs can freeze up.

Pain.  There was the expected knee pain, but that happens on even 2 mile runs, but it was definitely better than expected and I felt blessed.  Then about mile 10 my left hip started to hurt, but if you keep going things tend to work themselves out and something else sets in.  My feet felt like they had been pounded, since I was kicking so much asphalt, and I popped some children's chewable IB Profen at about mile 15.  Then the 20s theme was cramping, first my left quad, then my hamstrings, and finally some calf action.  There were a few runners along the way that were hurting more than I was, so I couldn't feel too bad for myself.  It was a bit crazy, but I was able to run the whole way and gave myself permission to walk through the water/Gatorade stations.  The day after, wow!!  I'm sore!  Four days later, I no longer thought about walking and started going down the stairs without holding on or going down backwards (which is easier when you're sore).

In the last 18 weeks, I ran 400 miles.  Who knows how many Justin Bieber songs that is?  As I went along I was working for the 400.  For example at 19 miles, I had 393 miles  under my belt.  Hitting 20 miles was so great.  It was the furthest I had ever run.  It was exciting to think one of my dreams is about to happen.  This is it!  I've got this!  I kept thinking of the quote I found just days before the race "You were strong enough to get this far. You are strong enough to keep going."    Over the last 30 weeks, I ran 625 miles between training for the half marathon and full marathon.

Along the way I met this guy dressed in a super man suit with an "m" instead of an"s".  He was so nice and whipped out his phone and interviewed me.  He was very nice and entertaining.  While we were running, he shouted "best tour of the city."  Things are a little funnier after you have run for 14 miles and have 12 ahead of you.  I totally should have taken my picture with him.  His name is Trent "Marathon Man" Morrow from Australia.  He is going for a Guinness World Record for the most marathons run in a year and is going for 160 or so in 20 different countries.  This was #25 this year and the 1st of 17 marathons in 17 days.  I had no idea who I had met at the time.  I hope he makes it!

I was waiting for "the wall" and wondering what it felt like, but didn't hit a distinct wall, just traveling soreness and a decreasing desire to keep running.  By mile 23 I was chanting to myself, "you never have to do this again."  I really didn't want to run the last mile, but I had gone that far, so I kept going to 26 and then there was the .2.  Never has a fifth of a mile been so far, it is almost 4 football fields though.  Holy cow!  At the finish line, one of the photographers asked if I was okay and commented "most people aren't staggering that much."  I thought it was funny and ever so slowly staggered to all the free food.  You get more handed to you the slower you go!

My splits were 28:34 at the 3.1 mile (5 k), 57:58 at 6.2 miles (10 k), 1:33 at mile 10, 2:02 at 13.1 miles, 3:06 at mile 20, and 4:08 at the finish!  My cheerleaders were right at the finish line!  It was so great to see them and then I wonder who had the harder job, the runner or the caretaker.  Thanks Jas!!  He has put on a lot of babysitting hours to get me across the finish line!

My running tracking app "Runkeeper" said I ran 28.01 miles, but I don't know if they make a sticker of that :) and I'm pretty sure I didn't get lost.  At any rate, I was due for an ice bath when we got home.  My legs went totally numb and didn't move well.  It mimicked the feeling of an epidural.

It feels surreal to have done a marathon.  I don't feel too different, minus the soreness.  I guess I know what it is like and can say I've done it.  I still think running a few miles is hard, but I enjoy the time to think.  I wasn't sure if I'd want to keep running after, and I think I will :)

Carter the Character

Carter has been interested in tools lately and fixing things. When our power went out on Wednesday, we told him our house was broken, the heater was broken, the TV was broken, etc. He went and gathered his tools and said "house fix". He is so fun to have around and keeps me on my toes or thinking I need to be on my toes when I am feeding Kylie.

The toilet is the new hot item of the week. Things keep getting washed and dunked in there. I kind of thought we were past this, but it has taken on new appeal apparently. I love that he is so honest though and admits all the things he's done at this point. Here is an example of one of our conversations lately.

Mom hearing splashing in the toilet upstairs when I was downstairs.
Carter proceeds down the stairs: Wet
Mom: What happened?
Carter: Toilet
Mom: What else was in the toilet?
Carter: Duck in there
Mom: Are you supposed to play in the toilet?
Carter: No

Tonight he spontaneously decided he was going to get his shovel and eat his dinner with it. We think he is a pretty funny kid, but some days I am sprouting new gray hairs from all his "humor."

Easter

We had an Easter egg hunt with our ward playgroup and the kids had fun. Carter used his bug net to gather eggs and Kylie had a toy grocery bag to collect her eggs. Carter collected mainly blue and green eggs and Kylie's favorite was the purple ones.

This is the Easter bunny at the grocery store. It was early and Kylie was still sleeping, so it was just Carter and I.

Easter Sunday outfits- I tried taking pictures after church when the kids were spent. Before church we are trying to get Kylie as much nap as we can and then put their clothes on right after she wakes up, leaving after church as our only option. We did our best.

Seems as though I forgot to take any pictures of our little egg hunt at our house with cousin Alex and our Easter dinner where half the adults were from Taiwan. Carrie, Brett's wife, is from Taiwan and her friend and her friend's husband ate dinner with us. It was so fun to have a full table and yummy ham, but we didn't take any pictures.

Birthday Boy(s)! (since there isn't much on the little guy)

Jason had his birthday February 2 and turned 31. As I was telling Carter how old he was, he responded "he is 1 like Kylie." It is kind of a little different. We had a great day starting with presents, Hawaiian tuna melts for lunch, Ethiopian food for dinner, and Key lime Cake that evening.

Carter was practicing for his birthday.

The hump of meat in the middle is semi cooked meat.

These are the cupcakes from Carter's birthday party on St. Patrick's Day. It is a rainbow (Airhead Xtreme sour something candy) with 2 pots of gold (Rolos) at the ends of the rainbow since it was St. Patrick's day. For the cake part, you start with a white cake mix and divide it into 5 bowls and scoop in a little from each color to get the rainbow look. The idea came from Pinterest. More to come on our 3 year old when I get the pictures onto the computer, but we had a fantastic weekend celebrating!

Key Lime Cake (Recipe from Michelle and it is AMAZING! It works as a sheet cake if you don't have a bundt pan.)

2 limes (I use as many limes as it takes to get the full 1/2 c of juice. I also put in the zest from one lime)
1 pkg Duncan Hines white cake mix
1 small pkg instant coconut cream pudding
1/2 c. oil
4 eggs
1 c. sour cream
milk (I don't use any)

Juice and pulp the limes and then add enough milk to measure 1/2 c. Mix all ingredients and pour into a greased bundt pan. Bake at 350 for 40-45 minutes. Let cool for 20 minutes and invert onto a serving platter. When completely cool, top with lime glaze.

Lime Glaze (This is my rough explanation on what I do)

vanilla
powdered sugar
juice from one lime
butter, melted in microwave
milk

In bowl, put melted butter (3-4 T.) add some vanilla (1 t) and lime juice. Whisk in 1 1/2 - 2 cups of powdered sugar. Thin with milk. (I play around with the flavor..sometimes I add more butter/vanilla/sugar till it tastes good.)

Happy Holidays! Part 2

We moved to Utah for the month of December. Many generous family members took us in and fed us very well. The cliche held true for us...We had a very Merry Christmas! Really we experienced 2 Christmas Eve parties and 2 Christmas mornings. Pretty lucky!

HOTEL POTTER
The Eve of Christmas Eve we went to Grandpa Potter's Cabin and went snowmobiling and sledding. This was one of my favorite parts of our trip and Carter LOVED going snowmobiling. He couldn't get enough of it.

A REAL HOTEL
Here we are seeing the Christmas lights on Temple square on New Year's Eve. It was cold, but so great. Jason flew back to Virginia that morning, so it was just me and the kids.

HOTEL GATES
Not pictured even though we lived there for almost a solid week. Only because we were having too much fun to stop to take pictures. Oh Man! This post was inspired and motivated by Melissa too.

Thanks for a good time!

Happy Holidays! Part 1

I'm not the person who is shy about wishing people a Happy Halloween/Thanksgiving or
dare I say Merry Christmas, but this is truly a post covering the pre-Utah holiday celebrations.

Happy Halloween- Carter wanted to be a Fireman and chose a lion costume for Kylie. In true 2 year old fashion, he went trick-or-treating barefoot since he refused to put on his shoes. Kylie looked like the cutest little lion and even imitated a "roar."

Happy Thanksgiving- We ate with Krista and Travis one last time :( As usual, the food was awesome, but the company topped it! Carter is hugging/tackling Brooklyn here while Jason and Travis enjoy some dessert and football.

Thanksgiving weekend Brett, Carrie, and Alex came to visit. We saw some amazing fireworks + a tree lighting at the National Harbor. We also visited the National Botanical Gardens with the Christmas festivities. These rank as sone of my top favorite DC activities. They have replications of the Washington monuments all made out of wood and plants. AMAZING!

We made a "gingerbread house" out of rice krispies. I have never been very successful with the gluing things together with frosting nor making gingerbread. Carter and I enjoyed ourselves, both making and eating it!

We went to the White House Christmas Tree and saw Santa. Both kids willingly sat on Santa's lap. Carter wanted a bike horn, but was a little shy about talking to Santa. He was the cutest and nicest Santa you could find, besides Jason.

DC Temple lights. We made it in to see Jesus. Kylie loved to point and tell us "Jesus" over and over.

Farewell to my BFF Krista. Sad!

The Jorgensen family Christmas tree 2011. She tipped over 3 times in the first 2 days and then we tied it to the stair railings. Once only inches from my baby.
