DIXITQUE DEUS FAIT LUX ET FACTA EST LUX ~”And said God let there be light and, there was light.
In India, we are still amidst Diwali celebrations. Yesterday was 'Bhai Dhoj'...a ritual highlighting the bond and the relationship between a brother and his sister. This is though not celebrated in South India.
Am now in my home town and happy to be here for the festival among family and friends and so to me....light is...joy,
happiness,
love and
hope.
Preparations for the festival begins a month before with people repainting and refurnishing their homes. Basically, the old gives way for the new...but, this does not apply to spouse, kids, parents and immediate family.
Buying gifts, making various kinds of sweets and savories, new clothes and jewellery...are an integral part of the celebration.
The bursting of crackers has decreased considerably with the awareness on pollution and the harm it causes, yet we burst some for the sake of the kids.
The sacred Tulsi/Basil plant adorned with diyas...the earthen lamps. It is family time....
The story behind Diwali being celebrated varies from region to region, yet the essence is the same- to enjoy the inner light.
"Just as the treasures are uncovered from the earth,so virtue appears from good deeds and wisdom appears from a pure and peaceful mind. To walk safely through the maze of human life, one needs the light of wisdom and the guidance of virtue." - Buddha.
