There's something about sunsets that make me smile. Part of me wonders how it is that the sky can produce such unbelievable colors. Purple, pink, orange, yellow, red ... all of my favorite colors to paint! So today I decided to paint this view ... taken in Hawaii on a beautiful, warm October early evening.
Tonight's sunset in South Pasadena was another amazing collection of colors ... although it was mostly orange and pink. I snapped a few photos on my way to the market ... probably not too safe ... but the view could make a great painting ...

So they are filming a commercial in my house and I am locked upstairs on our third floor, enjoying the peace and quiet. Finally ... I am ready to start painting ... . Apparently they are about to move outside and start all of the "Halloween" scenes.  I just can't get used to the pumpkins and spider decorations in front of my house. It's January!
Dreama and I had a very fun "Artists Helping Artists" radio show this morning. Our guest was Randy Higbee, owner of Randy Higbee Gallery and www.kingofframe.com. Randy talked all about the success he had with his 6" Squared Exhibition and Facebook. It's a great show and you can listen to it here.

Wow. We had our first "Artists Helping Artists" conference call today and it was wonderful! I love talking with other artists about selling art. We talked about everything ... newsletters, blogs, selling on the internet v. galleries, pricing, etc. We are going to do it again on February 25th so I hope you will join us. It has been a long day. I spent last night at the the "sleep center" which is a place you go and sleep ... to determine if you are sleeping correctly. Trust me, trying to sleep with about 50 wires attached to you and a camera on you (!) does not lead to a good night's sleep.

I also agreed to another filming project at my house. They are filming a commercial for Roundy's which is a grocery store in the midwest (that I have never heard of). Has anyone heard of it? The "tech scout" was here today and that took about two hours ... so needless to say I didn't get to my easel until late this afternoon. I started a still life that DID NOT WORK so I went back to my comfort zone ... boats. I tried a silhouette for the first time and I like it. Which is a good thing because there is no way I had any energy left to start another one!

The rest of my paintings this week with be "schools" ... you will see paintings of Berkeley, USC, UCLA and actually Mayfield Senior School which is an all-girls school here in Pasadena. Of course with three boys I do not have any kids that go there ... although I am sure they wish they could!

I need to finish five Hawaii paintings by mid October and this is only the first. I love the colors, although it doesn't look like my photo came out that well. It looks much better in person! Maybe I will try to take another one.

So ... this award requires me to tell you seven fun things about myself so here I go ...
1. I am crazy when it comes to multi-tasking. My latest trick? I listen to books on tape while I oil paint.
2. I am 5'11" tall (so that is at least 1/2 the reason why my boys are so tall ...).
3. I have four brothers and sisters.
4. I painted my first oil painting in 2005.
5. I have been in two emergency landings (both on American Airlines).
6. I love sports. My favorite tv channel is ESPN and I love Sportscenter. But my favorite tv show is and will always be ... Project Runway. Yes ... in my next life I will be a fashion designer ...
7. I truly believe I was put on this earth to be a mom. It is by far the best job in the world.

Into the Sunset

In To the Sunset, Oil, 10" x 8"

This painting is for sale.

I painted this painting this past weekend when it was pouring outside. Seemed to be the right scene to paint as I imagined I was on a beach somewhere ... instead trapped inside on a crummy Southern California day!
The sun did come out on Sunday as I went to the Artist's Reception at Whites Gallery in Montrose. There were tons of people in attendance and the art was really great. I met some very nice fellow artists and I look forward to getting to know them well. Since I am so new to this it is great to have so many wonderful resources. I was really impressed with White's and their permanent collection. If you are looking for art, I highly suggest you head up there.
