Space Marine Test Model Pt. 2

Instead of me fooling around with more test models, I decided to sit down and paint up one of the Magnet Marines. As wisely suggested, I took pictures at different angles this time around, so you can see the whole mini.

I must admit this single model was quite a pain in my @$$. The Magnets would spin around, so my answer was to glued them in place with the tiniest dab of glue on the joints.  Later I would drop it and the most of the Magnets popped out super glued the arms and not the torso.

Despite the set-backs, I finished out the model. For the most part, I’m pretty pleased with how it looks. It would take a long time to build up an entire army this way, but I think the effort would equal the reward. Now I just have to paint up his other set of war-gear and we can call this model finished.

Space Marine Test Model

I'm not sure where I was going with this scheme. I wanted something metallic, but not silver. I wanted a color that would stand out on the table and at the same time would lend well to my wash-style of painting. After a few tests, we have the model that you see here. What I was trying to go for was... something regal or majestic, but it looks like it’s been in service for a very long time.

I started out with a brown base coat, then follow by Shining gold, then a liberal wash of Leviathan Purple. Next, the highlights, going back to the Shining gold, and then layered with Burnished gold… A little bit of Mithril Silver along all the edges, and finally a coat of Gryphonne Sepia to blend it all together. A few lite coats of Devlan Mud to start the shading, in the final stages, I layered with purple and black wash to help further define and add tint.

The little bit of color on the left shoulder pad is something to add more flair. I may just go back and make it all one solid color or keep it gold. The one thing is... the other marines are hybrids between the stranded kits and the new Death Company set. So, the next one will have more contrast with help of the shoulder pads and other details in the armor.

Any comments or criticisms are always appreciated.

Magnetized Space Marines Pt.2

For the time being this is it for the Marine project. I really wish they had some helmets, but that will have to wait. The only minor detail left is to drill out the barrel holes on the pistols.  I feel  pretty accomplished after the project. I’m little wiser about magnets without any major blood loss or inflicting damage to an important model. If the little buggers didn’t eat up so much time, I’d skip out on glue forever. Warning: Magnets are addictive. I keep trying to think of a fun magnet project besides boring Space Marines, but so far I got nothing.

However, before I can paint up one of these marines. There are a few loose ends with the Dark Eldar that need to be handled. After my last embarrassing defeat, I took a good look at my army and made a few adjustments. Then I spent most of yesterday building more Jet Bikes and a trio of Blaster wielding Trueborn.

These guys turn out better then I hope for when I started. They are made of Guardian legs, Wych torsos, and the Blasters are a cut apart Shredders with Blast pistols replacing the end of the barrel. They remind me of pissed off Fire dragons. Anyways, all they need now is Venom to cruise around in and they will be set to blow stuff up!

Edit #1. I fix the slider at the top of the blog. Now the pictures should open up to the larger images. The Headline banner now leads to different related posts.  If something is not working, please let me know. I thank you in advance.

Edit #2. The Pink One likes Snake Monsters... Tee Hee!

Magnetized Space Marines Pt.1

By no means is this a full blown project. I could see it being one, but it would require a fair amount of time to construct an entire army in this manner. For the time being, I’m happy just hobby away at the models I have now and not look at this as another army.

Long story, short… I really liked the way the magnets worked out for my Raiders. So, that got the old gears turning and inspired me to grab a box of the new Blood Angels Death Company. After a good old dig in the Bitz box, I was ready to build some marines.

It takes about 2 hours or so to build one guy, between scratch building the base, deciding the final pose and equipment layout. There are magnets embedded in the torso and in the back as well. The models base is also magnetized. The arms and backpacks have been lined with a a very thin sheet metal cut down to size. I figured it would save me on some magnets in the long run. I’m waiting to put heads on them till I can find something different then the standard/boring Mk. 7 helmets.

After I did the first one, I had to get some stronger magnets because the all parts would spin around and that annoyed the piss out of me. They still move a little bit but it's not nearly as bad. Other than that set-back, I’ve enjoyed the project so far.  The one pain I have encountered is getting the Bolters to line up properly, but I think that has to do with how far the magnets are drilled into the torso.

These are just the first two and I’m pretty happy with them.  If I can settle on a paint scheme in the near future I’ll get started on painting the one. It’s been ages since I focused on a single mini. I think it will make for a nice change of pace.

2v2 Battle Picture

Took this on Thursday during a game with a few friends. The Space Marine player is Dan from Nob Not Noob. Piloting the 'nids is Larry from Paint Your Toys. The Carnifex got knocked out if you're wondering.

Orks v. Space Marines

The game shaped up to be a 1,200 point conflict. Orks vs. the Space Marines in Dawn of War with a Kill point Objective. I won the first turn and decided to create a fire Base around the building. The Orks in turn set up out of range of most of my weapons or hid behind the buildings out of my line of sight. I did not have a good feeling about this one from the start...

The game was very intense and allot of fun. Mr. Watson played the orks in excellent orky fashion. The plan was brutally cunning and he pulled it off in spades. By the the mid game I had written this one off. In the Orks 3rd turn, they pulled off 4 charges and completely overrun my both my flanks. More then once did I sit there helpless, as Ork Mobs counted up fists full of dice

The only thing that save me from a complete stomping was a timely charge by one of my combat squads, in the second turn, to tie up the frisky storm-boys. The combat was a draw and blocking off the the Nob bikers from turning the corner and smashing my middle. The battle lasted long enough to grab the shoota mob's attention lessening the attack in the center.

The Ork wave crashed into my defenses and loses started to mount. During the Charge o' Rama Phase of the game. I lost all 5 Terminators and 2 of my combat Squads in the same assault phase. The shining moment, was my command squad decided to be tough and save all the wounds caused by the Nob Squad. While my own power fist scored 2 big wounds. They were able to turn the tide and kill off the last of the bikers. The War-boss took for safety of the cover.

I should have not won this game. It's that simple. I was out-flanked and overwhelmed by the horde. The lack of Power Klaws is what cost Mr. Watson the game. The mobs did not have the hammer to put the nails in the coffin ... so they say. I started the game with 30 Tactical marines... only 13 survived to tell the tale. Unfortunately for the Orks, all my luck came in a single shooting phase after the beating in the 3rd Turn. The fire fight managed to send off the last of the horde.

Command squad Pt. 2

Here a little work in progress on the command squad. Some detail work here and there and they should be ready to fry up some tanks. Don't they just cry for a Razorback Transport to roll around in... Hopefully I'll be done with them soon.

Meanwhile my Unhealthy addiction to Games Workshop's goofy looking jungle trees remains unchecked. The collection grows...

Stop in the name of the ....

Okay, this is a real simple one that you can make out all the left over missile launcher arms you find in the Tactical box. Simply find a arm that pointed out. I used the a plasma pistol arm and cut it off at the wrist. Next I took the hand off that braces launcher. With a little glue...presto! Your battle psyker is doing the " I zap you...."

Time to put this project to rest and paint something cool. No offence to you marine fans.

Command Squad

Here we have my heavy hitters for the army. The squad is kitted out to deal with any hard targets and other unpleasantness we may have to deal with. 2 Melta's and power fist should do the trick. They can lurk behind one of the advancing combat squad for a bit of cover and cause all sorts of havoc when the time is right.

Fire power!

Over the past day or so I've tried to put the brush on this project for two very good reasons. For one, i would like to start playing with the newbies so, i can get that ball rolling. Two... After finishing the terminators. I want more...just 5 more...that was not part of the plan when i was scraping mold lines like a crazy all last week.

While the paint has been dry'n. I took a deep breath and dove into the depths of the bits box looking for any marines that may not been assembled. In the end I found 7 or 8 marines and allot of combi-weapons! However, i don't' know what to do with them? I could make an all-star team of Sergent's and special weapons for the Tac. squads or construct some veterans.

It's for the twins..

Put the finishing touches up on the dread and wrapped up the First of the 10 man tactical squad. I even had some time to throw some paint on the captain too. I like the way everything is turning out considering how little time i have put in the models. All that needs done is the bases.

If I had to be trap'd on a Island with only ONE box set to paint forever and ever. Which one would it be....? Terminators! That right kids... even if these are the Black Reach ones...they are just pure awesome. They make me miss all the ones I recklessly E-bayed last summer.

And they shall know paint

Work continues on the Marines.... 20 Black Reach and this "Starter" Army should be good to go. I can't help but, to be tempted by the scout box set. Never painted the plastic ones...yet. Nothing fancy on the tactical Squads. The "rotting flesh" tone really stands out on the table and seems to love the new washes as much as I do.

I could not help myself but to jazz up the Dread just a bit. I wanted it to be in line with the one that Mr. Z painted. So I added some Exhaust ports on the back... a few little bitz like the skull icon on top. Most of the parts came from the city of death sprue.

Just a side note... Much thanks to the guys at Bell of Lost Souls for lett'n me in the club. You guys are super! If the Kid and Games Workshop would stop stealing all my money. I'd try to come roll dice with ya' in August.

I'm back...

Long time, no post. After wasting the past month or so on my second favorite hobby...Females. I return to the blog sphere... when will this old man learn just to hide in the garage and paint models? Likely never.... lousy stoopid biological compulsions.

Anyways back to the 40k front... after a terrible outing of the with my Hurd/demon list I have shelved the army until i get in the mood to do all the detail work that is left. Thanks to those who left a comment on the project. Your awesome! Now please excuse, my current work... is not my fault. I'm a Xenos player always have been and always will be.

However I recently come into a very small Space Marine army ( Thanks. Mr. Z... I think.) With the add fact the price increase caused me to go grab a starter box I've wanted for a while ( Horay for Green Templates). So now enjoy a small and quick space marine project. Why am i painting marines if I have such a strong distaste for them.

I plan in the near future on introducing the game to a few new recruits and i can't think of better intro to 40k then the space ass's. Incase you can't tell by the title of the blog. Unpainted Models are not an option. I'll probelly build 1,000 or 1,500 and call it quits. Now the trick is to match the paint scheme and make this important vow. After 20 years of painting this will be the last Space Marines I'll ever paint!
