Introduction to the Lost and Found Mike the MICrophone Series

Welcome to JEMS’ Lost and Found Mike the MICrophone series presenting recordings made by legendary taper Mike Millard, AKA Mike the MICrophone, best known for his masters of Led Zeppelin done in and around Los Angeles circa 1975-77. Until 2020, the Lost and Found series presented fresh transfers of previously unavailable first-generation copies made by Mike himself for friends like Stan Gutoski of JEMS, Jim R, Bill C. and Barry G. These sources were upgrades to circulating copies and in most instances marked the only time verified first generation Millard sources had been directly digitized in the torrent era.

That all changed with the discovery of many of Mike Millard’s original master tapes.

Yes, you read that correctly, Mike Millard’s master cassettes, long rumored to be destroyed or lost, have been found. Not all of them but many, and with them a much more complete picture has emerged of what Millard recorded between his first show in late 1973 and his last in early 1992.

The reason the rediscovery of his master tapes is such a revelation is that we’ve been told for decades they were gone. Internet myths suggest Millard destroyed his master tapes before taking his own life, an imprudent detail likely concocted based on the assumption that because his master tapes never surfaced and Mike’s mental state was troubled he would do something rash WITH HIS LIFE’S WORK. There’s also a version of the story where Mike’s family dumps the tapes after he dies. Why would they do that?

The truth is Mike’s masters remained in his bedroom for many years after his death in 1994. We know at least a few of Millard’s friends and acquaintances contacted his mother Lia inquiring about the tapes at the time to no avail. But in the early 2000s, longtime Millard friend Rob S was the one she knew and trusted enough to preserve Mike’s work.

Happily we are not done yet with Mike "The Mike" Millard's treasure trove of Yes recordings.

We've written at length about the bands he loved most and Yes is definitely on his Mount Rushmore, having taped them 14 times from 1974 to 1991 and that doesn't count two ABWH gigs.

Not just taped them, but taped them brilliantly. Save for a missed encore on his March 18, 1974 capture also from The Forum (Volume 39 in the Lost and Found series), Mike's canon of Yes recordings might represent his best collective work of any band, both in terms of quality and completeness. By the way, that missing encore from that Forum '74 gig just might show up soon in another on-going JEMS' series and the show doesn't end the way you presume it does.

Yes toured behind the album Going For The One in 1977, and Mike and Jim caught three shows over four days. The first night in Inglewood on September 23 was released on Vol. 143, while Long Beach September 26 came out four years ago on Vol. 22. Given there are multiple versions of those two shows in circulation per Forgotten Yesterdays, this September 24 Forum show is the least-common of Millard's '77 Yes recordings.

The notes for the one version available to download on Forgotten Yesterdays suggests the quality is "quite good" but "maybe not as good as night one." We're happy to report that this fresh transfer of Millard's original master cassettes is as good as night one or even better. There are moments where the quality is fairly mind-blowing in closeness and richness. How those AKG microphones, that Nakamichi tape deck and TDK tapes captured this much musical information is astonishing. Mike was in a great taping location and the mix and sound from the PA was sublime. Samples provided.

Here's what Jim R recalled about Yes at The Forum in 1977:

Mike and I attended the Yes concert at The Forum on September 24, 1977. I pushed Mike into the arena in the wheelchair. We sat in the second row on the floor, one row closer than our perfect third row position inside our desired "sweet spot." But we were dead center, down to the seat number. Do you get the sense that we were very picky with our seat locations? You bet we were. By 1977 we had the ticket industry mastered.

We also saw the first night at The Forum, but unfortunately at both shows we had a real rowdy crowd around us. Do the math: sitting second row on the floor we had maybe only 10-12 seats in front and around us (out of 18,000), but a few of them were hooting and hollering all night. As he did the previous evening, Mike was throwing pennies at offenders to send the message to be quiet but it did little good. Fortunately, the mastering wizards are able to suppress most of the crowd interference.

This tour was the Yes' last to feature the typical stage at one end of the floor. In 1978, the "In-The-Round" stage set up began. Mike and I much preferred the end-stage set up as we always scored great seats. The "In-The-Round" configuration brought the distant seats much closer to the stage, but for Mike and I, it meant half the band always had their backs to us.

Mike and I attended every Yes show we could as they were one of our (Rob S included) favorite bands of all time. In fact, I first met Mike at a Yes concert at the Long Beach Arena in March of 1974 and here we were three and a half years later taping together.

As usual, the sound quality at The Forum was excellent. Yes used Clair Brothers, the premier sound company in the day. Both nights offered excellent PA sound in which to pull a great recording.

What also made this tour special was the return of Rick Wakeman to the band. The previous tour in 1975 had Patrick Moraz on keyboards. Sorry Pat, but you do not cut it. I'm sure many Yes fans agree with this statement. The return of Wakeman likely contributed to the rowdy nature of the audience.

I took photos at the show, but the pictures were damaged by the Kodak lab. I restored the Yes images as best as I could.

Forum and the quality is quite good (maybe not as good as night one). I got this in a trade years ago and pulled it out, dusted it off, and remastered it. This is the complete show except for the end of Awaken being cut off (I guess the taper ran out of tape).

The date 7-7-7 marked the 30th anniversary of the release of Going For The One, reuniting the "Classic Yes Line-up," so I thought it would be fun to seed the shows I have in my collection on or near the dates of their 30th anniversaries.

Here's an excellent quality recording from Mike Millard, torrented by Mesquite on Dimeadozen just a few weeks ago. Yes is playing their hearts out,
but the volume level in The Forum is low, the crowd is rowdy, and the audio mix favors Chris Squire's bass for most of the show. If you are interested in listening closely to Fishy, here's your best chance yet.

This remaster helps the mix somewhat by pulling up the levels of the rest of the band. A number of small drop-outs were eliminated and one big speed variation in Awaken was flattened out with a little creative editing. The recording was equalized to brighten it up a little.

I must report that there were some howler monkeys in the audience on this particular evening. One was especially close to the microphones and tended to emit a loud G sharp for extended periods when excited. At the beginning of one particularly stimulating song, his pitch increased to A natural. To reduce his dominance, I set the parametric equalizer for his frequency and reduced the volume of his howling by -10 db. But he is still quite audible. I wonder if this sound was the poor creature's mating call, and if he was successful in finding a mate on this evening. I rather doubt it.

Notes
This remaster should be considered an upgrade to the PRRPSAE 05 version. More advanced software and techniques were used during this project. A great deal of time was devoted to repairing or removing as many clicks, pops and other tape errors as possible, using non-destructive techniques. The audience noise and loud claps were more extensively addressed in this version.
*18 segments were found to have an abrupt, audible amplitude boost of 3-6dB. The volume of the sound and the hiss both clearly increased in these segments. These were corrected, eliminating this distraction.
**The recording system made frequent adjustments to record volume such as attenuation after a loud clap. These were corrected as much as possible.
***The crowd was very enthusiastic that night. Frequently yells, loud claps and whistles were present during the songs. Where present, they were repaired or attenuated as much as possible. Most applause found between songs was left unaltered.
****Remove redundant sections and track as continuous show.

This recording has never been distributed before.
It was recorded on an early mono Sony Recording Walkman (undefeatable AGC, sorry) from the audience in the fairly cavernous Oakland Colosseum Arena (about 1/3 back & halfway up, stage left risers), hence it is not a great recording.
Certainly listenable though, I give it a C+, though it rises to about a B in many spots.
There are some dropouts on the master, and the ends of 'Awaken' and 'And You And I' had to be patched due to batteries running out.
(The patches came from a boot of the Chicago show on the same tour.)
The encore of 'Roundabout' was (of course) performed at this show but did not get recorded.
There are also a few distracting audience noises & clearly audible comments, the most egregious being the moron who yells out 'Hey Wakeman, do a sola!' during the quiet part of 'Awaken'.
Despite these flaws, it is an excellent performance and Yes collectors will find it enjoyable.
If there is a better recording of this same performance, I'd love to hear it.
I will post a few samples in a bit.

A couple of thoughts on this performance:

1. I was outraged, OUTRAGED I tell you, that tickets for this show went for the then oh-so-steep price of $7.50. Why, I had never paid more than $6 for a show in my life to that point! If only I knew then what I know now!

2. The laser & light show at this performance was hands down the best I'd seen at a rock show before or since. During Awaken, the laser beams generated seemed to mimic the art of the lines on the 'Going For The One' album cover. Simply outstanding. (It is at that point that you can hear the guy next to me admonishing the moron next to him for taking flash pictures of the light show, blinding about half the row. Exactly what did he think would come out on that photograph?) I saw the show the next night and there was no laser show; maybe it was broken, but I never saw lasers at a Yes show again. Someone suggested that they stopped using them for fear of a lawsuit. Can anyone verify if lasers were used on any date from this tour on or after 9/24/77?

When Yes headed for Switzerland to begin work on the follow-up album to “Relayer”, few could have predicted the changes that were about to occur. Ironically, it was Swiss-born keyboard player Patrick Moraz who would be at the center of yet another chapter of Yes internal turmoil, Despite receiving high praise for his work on the album “Relayer”, Moraz had felt restrained within the confines of the Yes fold and artistic differences resulted in open conflict between him and his band mates. Eventually, the axe was dropped and he was literally expelled from the band. This left Yes without a keyboard player and no new album in nearly two years. The prospects were not looking good, but then, who should arrive, but ….Rick Wakeman !

     It is undeniable that the “Relayer” album remains one of the band’s finest works and that Patrick Moraz’ contribution to Yes was enormous for the short time that he was in the band. But for the die-hard fans, the earlier incarnation of Yes with Rick Wakeman was considered THE classic line-up. For all his brilliance and fine work, Patrick Moraz could never match the enormous popularity of Wakeman.  Having Rick re-join the band was probably the best move that Yes could have made. Work on a new album could now begin. 

     Was it the band’s happiness to see Rick return, Wakeman’s enthusiasm for re-joining his old friends, or perhaps a little of both? We will never know for sure, but the fact remains that the work during those few weeks in a Swiss studio was nothing less than stellar. Energy and creativity must have been at high levels because Yes emerged with one of their finest albums to date, “Going For The One”. With such an impressive collection of new material, Yes were more than ready to go out and meet their fans again. The “Going For The One” tour began on July 30th, 1977, and ended on December 6th of the same year, drawing sold-out crowds each and every night. The set list was built around the new album, all five songs of which were often played, but also retained some cherished Yes classics such as ‘Close To The Edge’, ‘And You And I’, ‘Starship Trooper’ and ‘Roundabout’.

   Sadly, even though the “Going For The One” show was performed 89 times, none of these concerts were recorded for broadcast purpose, that we know of did record at least one of their shows since part of a 1977 show did appear on the “Yesshows” live album. Still, no other soundboard recording from that tour is available. To hear a complete performance from the 1977 tour, fans would have to turn to audience recordings. 

    There are many such shows recordings available but, unfortunately, very few are of good quality. PRRP has released remastered versions of the Göthenburg and Providence shows, but the one that we bring you now, we humbly believe, is the best audience-recorded concert from the 1977 tour to have surfaced thus far. And we can thank Mr. Mike Millard for that.

   Mike Millard was a rock music fan who lived in the Los Angeles area and had a particular interest in live music performances. Fortunately for us he also had excellent recording equipment. To elude security Mike would smuggle the equipment into the venue in the base of his wheelchair. Was Mike truly confined to a wheelchair or did he only use it as a prop?  We don’t know for sure, but the fact remains that, prop or not, a wheelchair was an ideal place to conceal the recording gear. Millard, who always used the best quality cassette tapes available, seemingly had the knack for finding the perfect spot from which to record because his recordings usually show an almost perfect sound balance (perhaps another fringe benefit of the wheelchair use?). Some of the best live recordings of The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and Yes from that time period, we owe to Mike Millard’s ingenuity and patience. Sadly, Mike passed away in 1990, but his legacy lives on. A number of his master recordings still exist in one form or another, including one of this amazing Yes performance at the LA Forum.  We have done our best to minimize the minor flaws that exist in this master to bring you the very best Yes experience from 1977. Since Mike supported trading and loathed bootleg sellers, we are sure that he would approve of this new PRRP release, produced to enhance his great work.  Enjoy !

Notes from the Re-Master
    We began with a lossless version of Mike Millard’s master tape. The whole show is here but we suspect a few cuts from tape flips do exist in the tape, just well hidden. There is no missing music. As with most Mike Millard recordings the quality and frequency response are outstanding for the era. Mike must have also positioned himself in the perfect spot within the venue as the balance is even and there is no significant distant, delay effect. Still, the acoustics of the forum can be appreciated.
    When listening to the master, it is obvious that the audience is quite vocal, even during periods when the music is playing. Dynamic filters were used to reduce this audience “contribution” to the overall sound. The next major problem was speed. The whole recording had an obvious speed error. Studio and live commercial references were used to calculate this speed error and correct it. The result is a much different sound than the original. Tonality is always affected by speed corrections but even after the speed correction additional tonality adjustment was necessary to balance the sound. Again, commercial live references were used to help in this process. 
    As good as Mr. Millard’s equipment was, it still seemed to suffer from auto-record level technology. This meant that intermittent suppressions were found after loud sections that needed to be restored. Hiss was also present and annoying in certain sections. This was reduced. Clicks and pops were removed or repaired where present and finally, the show was re-tracked to avoid sector boundary errors.

The date 7-7-7 marked the 30th anniversary of the release of Going For The One, reuniting the "Classic Yes Line-up," so I thought it would be fun to seed the shows I have in my collection on or near the dates of their 30th anniversaries.

This is a recording of the first of two nights Yes played in Oakland, according to the taper, ghobish. It was originally dated the 22nd, but has since been corrected. This torrent name and the notes in this description have been edited, but the info files in the torrent have not been changed and still reflect the wrong date, 1977-09-22. 

Quality is slightly improved from the recording that was downloaded by a friend who gave it to me. (See "Original Info.txt" for more information.) I found the files I received to have some clipping, which I removed. It also ran a little slow (flat), so I raised the pitch of the recording by 50 cents and moved the track boundaries closer to the beginning of songs. 

According to the original info file, And You And I and Awaken are both patched from "the Chicago show," which may have been either 1977-09-02 or 1977-09-03. I could not find the point at which the patch is inserted.

This recording has never been distributed before. It was recorded on an early mono Sony Recording Walkman (undefeatable AGC, sorry) from the audience in the fairly cavernous Oakland Colosseum Arena (about 1/3 back & halfway up, stage left risers), hence it is not a great recording. Certainly listenable though, I give it a C+, though it rises to about a B in many spots. There are some dropouts on the master, and the ends of "Awaken" and "And You And I" had to be patched due to batteries running out. (The patches came from a boot of the Chicago show on the same tour.) The encore of "Roundabout" was (of course) performed at this show but did not get recorded.

There are also a few distracting audience noises & clearly audible comments, the most egregious being the moron who yells out "Hey Wakeman, do a sola!" during the quiet part of "Awaken."

Despite these flaws, it is an excellent performance and Yes collectors will find it enjoyable. If there is a better recording of this same performance, I'd love to hear it. I will post a few samples in a bit.

A couple of thoughts on this performance:

1. I was outraged, OUTRAGED I tell you, that tickets for this show went for the then oh-so-steep price of $7.50. Why, I had never paid more than $6 for a show in my life to that point! If only I knew then what I know now!

2. The laser & light show at this performance was hands down the best I'd seen at a rock show before or since. During Awaken, the laser beams generated seemed to mimic the art of the lines on the "Going For The One" album cover. Simply outstanding. (It is at that point that you can hear the guy next to me admonishing the moron next to him for taking flash pictures of the light show, blinding about half the row. Exactly what did he think would come out on that photograph?) I saw the show the next night and there was no laser show; maybe it was broken, but I never saw lasers at a Yes show again. Someone suggested that they stopped using them for fear of a lawsuit. Can anyone verify if lasers were used on any date from this tour on or after 9/24/77?

After seeing the other 2 seeds of this show, one the original and then the remaster, I dug out my version of the show and compared it. Lo and behold its an alternate source and complete to boot (no pun intended). The differences of this show and the other one are: 1) complete show, 2) no patches to any songs, 3) Firebird Suite intro is complete. I tweaked the audio some as usual and speed corrected. The bass pedals were a little too much for the taper's mics so they are a bit saturated, but not enough to make it bad.

I got this is in a CD trade at some point a few years back so I have no idea of the lineage. It appears to be couple of gens due to the speed being off.

Donovan is really, REALLY into the songs he's singing during this set. It's not just a concert, it's a true 1960's "happening" right in the middle of the disco era, with none of the nostalgia one might experience if the concert took place today. That's sort of a contradiction, especially if you lived during both the 1960's and '70's but hey that's the way this concert is. Today, people performing "hippie" acts they did in the 1960's can seem like they are doing shtick (look that word up, it's real), but Donovan still exudes warmth and even more so during this show.

was left as mono to retain more of the original character of the recording.

By request here is another Going For The One show. I had this show on CD and when I listened to it I found that there was some distortion in the right channel that sounded like the bass was clipping. I then looked thru my tapes and found it there as well so I decided to redo the whole thing. The tape did not seem to have the distortion, but I could tell that a lot of work needed to be done on this baby to get it into shape.

Remastering notes (caveat - I am not a professional):
The right channel needed a volume boost and some EQ to bring up the highs. Then there was some small fixes to be made between songs and to clean up some cuts. Then the whole thing needed some EQ'ing for overall bass and highs. A 'clapping' reduction was made to get rid of a lot of annoying loud applause.. After that the audio compression was done to bring out the vocals and then an overall compression for 16-bit mastering. Finally pitch correction to get the speed right. Voila!

Notes about the show:
This is not a complete show. The tour song and And You & I are missing. There are some cuts in some songs as noted in the setlist and some in-between song chatter missing as well. My tape had Going For The One in the wrong place presumably so the whole thing would fit on one 90 minute cassette. Also, it is possible that the last half of Awaken is from a different source or show as the pitch was completely opposite of the rest of the show. It fits nicely in there, but who knows. I don't know what gen the show is, but its quite good. Also interesting is the mix. I had a hard time determining where the taper was. The vocals sound quite low in the mix most of the time and the bass is up front. Also, the acoustic guitar in Turn Of the Century is very prominent and its interesting to hear little nuances you don't normally hear. The crowd is exhuberant to say the least, especially near the taper.

If only the best performances and best recordings coincided! What we have here is one of the best performances of the GFTO tour. Wakeman is in top form, and really up in the mix. Jon Anderson is in excellent voice this night; he even makes “Going for the One” sound effortless. Alan White is truly energized. Steve Howe gets lost a couple of times, as does Jon once or twice, but Chris pulls them back on course. There are a couple of flubs that bring you back to earth, but overall the audience and band are in a rare groove. 

The recording quality is good most of the time. There are a few spots where the tape sounds especially worn, but the biggest problem is bass distortion during some of the heaviest parts of the Yes repertoire. It’s still listenable, and I enjoyed the show from beginning to end.

Sometimes it can take me a while to get around to listening to stuff I download... 10 years ago I downloaded a copy of this show entitled "7 From 77", which I believe also circulates as "TheTooleMan 2002 Edition", and just now got around to comparing it to a copy of this show I received in snail mail trade eons ago.  While they're both from the same source, I think my copy sounds significantly better, plus "7 from 77" tests lossy...  Only downside is the brief cut during "Starship Trooper".  In any case, I hope this is an upgrade for many of you.

The date 7-7-7 marked the 30th anniversary of the release of Going For The One, reuniting the "Classic Yes Line-up," so I thought it would be fun to seed the shows I have in my collection on or near the dates of their 30th anniversaries.

Equipment troubles in Atlanta brought a few unforeseen additions - and a notable deletion – from the usual setlist of the GFTO tour. Steve Howe’s pedal steel was not functioning when it came time to play “And You And I,” so Jon held down the fort with an improvised tour song – the first one of this tour - and an unplanned rendition of “Leaves of Green” while the techs tried to get the instrument working. After delaying for several minutes, the band launched into “And You And I” without the usual bombastic introduction, and Steve played the pedal steel parts on his guitar – a precursor to Trevor Rabin’s rendition! Since the pedal steel is central to the title track of the new album, it was dropped from the set. Two weeks into the tour, “Going for the One” had only been performed once, on August 23, in Detroit.

The recording quality is good overall, but would probably benefit from a new digital transfer with better equipment. Sound is clear and up-front, which is nice considering that The Omni is primarily a basketball arena.

Here is a wonderful snapshot of YES in their prime, featuring the band in 1977, from first-generation tape. This is a very fine show, EX-sound quality. The taper did also the 1976 Detroit show and used great equipment, as the results show. Detroit concerts from the 1970s (and the city's great audiences) are always special, so here's a Detroit Special for all Yes fans to enjoy.
