A good yield

The result of a few weeks...

It's been some time since I posted an update, I've fallen back into the old habit of painting many miniatures at once. Today, I varnished 34 Gloranthan miniatures for our Runequest games: roughly from left to right you can see...

3 nice barbarians, forgot where from

4 Talastaring hoplites in the colours of Daerius

A lunar priestess in the process of hosting a cult spirit

4 Dara Happan guards ( babylonians) to go with the L & L Dara Happan Captain

Fazzur Wideread (L & L) and the Imperial guard (Mad Knight)

Harem girls, bard, tavern wench, barman from Hasslefree

Name escapes me wise guy from L&L

8 big trolls from Madknight

All in all some wonderful stuff, I might fancy them up a bit more, but for now they're ready and well varnished!

Fazzur

Fazzur Wideread

Fazzur 'Bookworm' Wideread is the Lunar instated governor of Sartar, currently residing in Boldhome. He's a general from Tarsh, born to the Orindori clan, son to Vostor Blacktooth. He is a Yanafal Tarnils worshiper, and a member of the Scarlet Scimitars, a Yanafali sect striving to keep the blood pure. He was dismissed after a discussion with Sor Eel about how to handle Pavis in 1610, but was reinstated to suppress Kallyr Starbrow's revolt in 1613 and made Governor General of Sartar afterwards. He loves horses and hates Ducks.

Trollkins and Trolls

The trollkin pack
I intended to no longer paint big batches of miniatures, but I started on a big bunch of Trollkin nonetheless, so I'll post an occasional update. First thing was the skin tone foundation and a light brush for some depth.
And the trolls. It's like a forum!
The trolls have been getting some much needed attention as well, here they are, skin tones done, metal done, and ready for a pass of leather.
All these mini's are from Mad Knight Casting, specialized in fine Gloranthan miniatures for skirmish and RPG.

The sound of industry

Left to right, trollkin, dara happans and imperials, trolls and broos, and some already painted trolls and adventurers
Slowly but surely I am getting back into the habit of spending a few hours working in the hobby room every week. I finished repairing the last batch, and giving them a good protective coating. I managed to start the new classification system in the rpg room, so I can find specific NPC's more easily. And I just finished whitewashing a bunch of miniatures, including trolls, trollkin, lunars, and a few broos. That way I can have my 30 minutes of painting every day, just pick up where I left off the day before, and slap on some paint.
Here they are in all their glory. The Mad Knight Imperials in particular look great, and I look forward to painting them a lot! Probably gonna be finished first, after the painted ones are ready, of course. With the Glorantha miniature kickstarter's lots of new miniatures coming up, I need to make some room before the end of the year!

Restart of our RuneQuest 6 campaign

Some nice primitives for Prax and Monster Island!

Business has been slow in my little hobby-den lately: a cold winter, making it rather unconfortable to sit there, was the first reason for decreased activity. The job requiring more effort, and a general increase in sports and training time, took care of the rest. Before you know it, you're at a standstill, too knackered after work, too tired after running, too cosy in your couch. The blog suffered as well, of course, what to tell if there is nothing to tell? With the campaign in Sartar relaunching, I'm hoping I can get some more regular painting sessions in. Work still is demanding, and with 4-5 training sessions a week there's not so very much time left. Still, with some planning it must be possible to have a session or two a week.

Here are some nice primitives I acquired at Salute in April, I finally came around to basing them up. The mimis are from Steve Barber Models. There's more stuff, which I hope to post up later this week, matter of getting some life back into the blog.

That time of the month

That time of the month where you realize you haven't been posting a lot about your miniatures and terrain work. There has been a lot happening under the hood, new modular interior terrain, i've been working on the warship, and a lot of painted miniatures are waiting for some last minute retouches - some handling damage because we played with them - and some above zero dry weather so I can varnish them and give them some much needed protection. Expect more on this soon (tm).

Te new scorpion man, looking like the first one

Another fellow on my desk is a new scorpion man conversion, again a joint venture between a giant scorpion and a nude berserker. Here's a pic of that one, he's good to go, just needs varnish as well. With the freezing cold being less of an issue, I hope to varnish all the new miniatures early next week.

Morokanth Warrior finished

Warrior Morokanth in the Rubble
I have slapped some paint on my most recent sculpt, and it looks nice enough. I think I'm gonna make a few more, a trader with a notebook and a herder come to mind...

And from the right...

Do Morokanths have a weewee?

This one certainly does!
I think this Morokanth is finished, I'm gonna let it harden, basecoat, and then paint it up over the weekend before I start on the next one. This one, by the way, is a male Morokanth.

I know, I'm vulgar :) But Bif the Morokanth is happy!

Custom PC miniatures

My players like playing with miniatures: they need to have visual clues when roleplaying, and most of them also play miniature games like Warhammer and Malifaux.  They like to have miniatures fitting their character, and preferably both a mounted and unmounted version.  Now there are some manufacturers that offer a few of those, but nowhere near a full range.  It's even harder if you're not playing traditional medieval.  So often the only resource is modding.

One of my players' characters is a Riverfolk Noble, so we were looking for a mix between a gypsy, a mongol and a saracen, something along those lines :)  We found a Reaper rider that more or less looked the part, be it a bit modest, and a Reaper foot figure with a cape and scimitar, although he wore armor and a helmet, which he didn't want.

Decapitated the foot figure, prepared a head, and repositioned the lance arm on the rider

So I took out the ole Dremel and my huge set of mini-lathes and drills, as well as a big blob of grey stuff, and I adapted the miniatures as requested.  Talk about spoiled players :)

Added the head to the footie, sculpted the scarf and headband, and sculpted the shoulder pads on the rider.  On the right the sword which teh rider will have holstered behind his saddle.

Dark troll skeletons!

Here are the dark troll skeletons I painted this week:  painting these is a breeze, 80% drybrushing, and I finished all four in about 2 hours.  And they look fine for the game table...

Harrek and Friends

Well, technically they're not all friends, but here are a few personalities from the Lance and Laser series I finished this week.  I can only repeat that working 2 or 3 figures at a time is a way more productive way that trying to paint 40 at once.  It may seem like more efficient if you use one colour on 15 figures at once, but progress is too slow, and you get demotivated.  Way better to see one or  two miniatures finished after a good long session.

State of the workbench

The miniatures based and assembled!
After having worked through most of my remaining Lance And Laser RQ stuff, I have finished cleaning, assembling and basing most of my remaining Mad Knight miniatures. As soon as I have the room and time I'll spray the basecoat on, and I can start painting the miniatures.

The large left part - on the paper - is a lot of trolls and big broo, as well as four great troll skeletons. The right row, top to bottom: Red Mask assassins (6), imperial bodyguard (6) and little broo (6), with two female Humakti and a Humakti Cross on the right edge of the picture!

And some Uzzzzz...

These are the Uz I have painted this week.  You can notice the different style between the two pictures, but it's no sweat, they're all good.  I'm working on yet another style of models, from Mad Knight Castings, but these are Otherworld - with slightly depigged noses - and Lance and Laser.  I'm still working on a rational for some female Uz having six breasts and other only two.  I think six is better, because more breasts > less breasts.

The rest of last weeks yield

Since a few weeks my production has gone up tremendously.  I have painted quite a lot of miniatures, about 2 per day, with simpler colours, but good enough for the game table...with hundreds of miniatures, one has to adopt a degree of practicalism, rather than taking 2 months to try and paint a unit of miniatures as well as possible.  Here is what I painted / or at least finished between wednesday and today.
Lance & Laser Aldryami

Nice Fire wizard, sold as L&L Minaryth Purple

Some simple mini's I got at Crisis 11: assassin and old man

A nice little goblin archer, I think it was Hasslefree

Another dark troll

Looking for a fight

And a view from the back
Here is another dark troll finished, next up are some Lance and Lasers I have to finish up, and then it's time for a bit of Mad Knight goodness, I think I'm gonna start with the cannibal cult.

Female troll about to split skulls

Otherworld troll, slightly altered face to resemble the Uz idiom
And another one from the back

This week I almost finished 7 miniatures, mostly trolls, but this is the only one I actually, completely finished -unless I briefly go back to it- including base flocking and retouching. I like the statures of the otherworld figures quite well, and since there is no thing like too many Uz, I bought the lot, and they are slowly getting painted, so I can finally start painting the brilliant Mad Knight Glorantha stuff that I started basing and prepping last week!

First pic with the new camera

K-5 w Pentax-M 100mm f4 macro

As mentioned some time ago, I have gotten around to purchasing some new gear.  Just for reference, I post the first picture, of a half finished savage orc boar rider, which will be used as a RuneQuest Tusk Rider.
Having new gear is – of course – nice and dandy, but boy is this thing sharp:  for the above image I have to set up the camera at about 50 cm from the model.  The depth of field is only a few millimeters deep at full open, and even at f8 it’s still not enough to get the entire miniature sharp.  Massive control, and so very sharp, there’s no way I’m gonna pretend any skill at painting after this, every error, no matter how tiny, will be revealed with this setup!
The camera is a Pentax K-5, the lens is a 100mm f4 macro lens from 25 years ago, with excellent sharpness and contrast.  The picture above is without any lighting setup, just a small tripod and 2 second trigger to avoid shaking.

Ben the great troll

Ben the great troll.  You should see his brother Jerry!
Here's one of the miniatures I have received from Madknight Casting last week.  I have a lot of stuff still on my work table that I'm gonna finish first, but I just wanted to show the impressive quality of the miniature.  Plus, finding a real Glorantha troll is not so easy, I'm very glad the choice got so much bigger!

For comparison I put a Reaper assassin next to our friend Ben.

Message from Cthulhu!

Great Old Cthulhu himself has seen fit to send me a parcel, containing a collection of weird looking artifacts, packaged in an alchemist treebark concoction and polymer cover, a container surely devised by the old gods.

I have tried to make a picture of it, but some of the packages resisted by malignantly reflecting every bit of light in the investigation room.  Still, for what it's worth, here is the picture.  In the meanwhile said package has again disappeared, very probably it went back into the void.  Or maybe someone wrapped it in gift paper and put it under the christmas tree.  Time will tell.
