Cheapnis is my weaknis

It is not necessary to have complex models to try war-galley gaming. Indeed, you can use little cardboard squares like Avalons Hill's famous TRIREME game. But that is rather dull too.

A slightly more lively style is to use Toblerones. I printed some images and folded them before sticking to a thin card base... voila  war-galleys. Lots of them....

You can down load the images I used -- see link at upper left on this blog for SIMPLE FLEETS.

These can be printed at the scale you want. I printed them at 1/1200 , I think.

You could cut the silhouette ... but it takes much more time.

NAUMACHIA : PART III

Salamis 2020 fleets in 1/1000. Here are the ships already shown last week or so.

1/1000 makes more sennse when scaling. 1200 is a 'historical scale not a law.

1/1000 gives  a little more space when modelling a pentekonter or trieres. It also means 2mm figures can be used as deck crews,

Wrecks and ramming - but no ravens here

NAUMACHIA : PART II

Next scale is c. 1/1000. These are scratch-built war-galleys for the Hellenistic period

They are made from plastic sheet, cardboard and paper. Using very fine scissors and knife.

Superglue is essential but be careful not to breathe it when working closely on fine details...I stuck my fingers together many many times. Superglue runs like lightning under capilliary attraction and will go up a gradient - be careful!

I made about 100 of them. Luckily they fit with my new cast ships.

Pentereis in centre with mostly triereis.

Casting is so much easier with just making a few masters. My fingers still hurt from these...

Shipyards on Overtime

I got the models made and cast off a bunch of ships for the Salamis project.

These are 1/1000 scale - which actually go well with others which are nominally 1/1200.

First my insect collection !

No it is actually a bunch of deck fighter units. I have two sizes so there can be a step reduction for hits.

They are taken off Irregular miniatures 2mm strips. Irregular have many different HERE

Small and very imperfectly formed. But they do the job. I made some small plastic pincers to move them around.

The ships are cast in urethane resin.  Light and easy to cut. I did discover that it needs mega-washing to get rid of the mould-release agent. I think I will go back to vegetable oil ........

This is how 3 days can disappear....

The deck fighters do the job...

 Here are the Persians. 5 different. As with mature wargamers, close-ups can be cruel. But these are painted for mass production. Actually the shields need painting..oops.

And some wreck markers in case the worst happens ...
Some for each side. Plus men in the water !
Any mis-casts can also be used for these.

So that was how the holiday weekend vanished in the shed ! It's like a Tardis.
