Gallic character figures ....

I've finished painting and basing the Expeditionary Force 'civilian' figures- they'll fit in with the rest of my Gauls (if a bit large,  merging into the crowd)  and make some nice character figures if needed.

Perhaps they could be the fellowship of the golden torque ?

Additions for the Gauls (WIP) ....

I've purchased a box of Expeditionary Force 'gallic civilians',  nice set - they are really 60mm figs, but the odd larger/taller figure won't look out of place. There are two druid types, two women, two young men, three warriors and a selection of heads & weapons. The women and young men are not as tall as the warriors/druids.

I've done some trial assemblies
I'll be using up my other spare bits to modify/tweak to my satisfaction, I expect the green stuff will be out as well 😊

bits for interiors and bigger photo backdrops

Getting ready for a feast ...

A recent Ebay pickup, four resin cast items for a large feast or party ...
will need to make a suitable interior room plus more people and servants too :)

Higher Backdrops for picture taking

To get some higher backdrop boards I bought a couple of the standard Daler art board sheets - colour Delft Blue. They provide a basic taller backdrop for picture taking...
The blue is a bit light, need to experiment a bit, but at least a full height picture of the ship is possible (and also larger buildings when made); I may add some clouds to one sheet and keep the other plain.

Roman street scene ?

A little project to tinker with, some ideas for a roman street scene - using some cut up boxes as mockups and a little sketch
ideally I would use it for story lines and displaying my civilian figures.

Roman Civilians (the market etc)..

The roman civilians are now all painted up and ready for use in story lines etc. Shown below with improvised backdrop buildings (not roman in style but close enough).

The market stalls set up ....

The seated figures with an attendant (one of the market stall holders)
I'll have the larks tongues and my wife will have the snails..

Slave Market ...

A quick setup of a slave market, using some of my civilian figures;
the small paved platform is another nice model from J G Miniatures.

Roman civilians and market stalls - WIP

Nearly finished the two wading roman infantry; have delved into my rather small hill of lead to get at my roman civilians and market stalls. These have been primed and I've started work on them ....

Somewhere in Botulinum ...

got out the civilian figures and did a couple of setups with the completed split up villa buildings - these have 'villa side' and 'street sides' one of which is a shop.  Also tried out some vinyl flooring off-cuts I kept from the kitchen floor which work well as a paved area.

a public area....

a street scene...

Chariot racing at the 'Circus Minimus' ....

The Circus Minimus on the outskirts of Botulinum, facilities are very basic - a new central reservation has been finished - the governor has more work planned. The crowd await the start of the race.
Gauls and Romans mix in the crowd; Queen Gargamantua, Obelix and Asterix are there,
The governor in his own enclosure, looking rather grumpy, his chariot (Red) has been drawn in the outside lane, with the gauls chariot (Green) on the inside lane.
And they're off, the chariots move off jockeying for position .....
On the turn during the first lap, Yellow has the edge....
At the end of the first lap Yellow is still in the lead with the gaul's Green chariot in second....
After the turn Yellow is out in the lead....
On the turn during the second lap, Yellow still has the lead ...
Yellow is still out in front as he starts his last lap,
The Gauls chariot makes a last attempt to catch Yellow.....
but can't catch him Yellow romps home to a win with the gaul's pipped at the post by Blue
Official Result:
1st - Yellow - local magnate - Ludicrous Sextus
2nd - Blue - local magnate - Nortius Maximumus
3rd - Green - the Gauls entry - Queen Gargamantua
4th - Red - the Governor's

The governor is not in a good mood, his chariot made a poor showing and came in last a fair way behind the Gallic entry. The Queen is in a reasonable mood - she didn't win but came in ahead of the Governor's entry.
---oXo---

Rules for chariot racing (very simple !)

General

Rules are designed for 54mm 2-horse chariots with a single driver.

On the race course, there is a nominal racing lane for each chariot which is 3 inches wide. A chariot may change racing lane to get the best line/overtake.

Each race is over 3 circuits of the race course.

Initiative

Before each move throw 1D10 for each chariot. Highest moves first, then next highest etc..

Movement

Throw 1D3 + 1D6 + 1D10, total is maximum movement in inches for the chariot.

Then apply penalties:
-3" to change 'racing lane'

Notes:
You cannot change racing lane on the first move.

The roman governer's personal guard, these chaps are from the HAT CeltIberians set  (the rest of the box have been converted into gauls)

and finally to get the roman military started, a couple of ballistas and crew  (Irregular Miniatures 54mm)
