Review & Commentary On Primordial Chaos: Gonzo Like A Fucking Boss! By Venger Satanis For Your OSR campaigns

"Unformed, omnipotent, oscillating, undulating, chromatic, prismatic, and ultra-telluric.  Primordial Chaos is the throbbing gristle of our hobby, the pale underbelly of a sandworm coughing up a hairball akin to the dark messiah who shall change the unchangeable.  Neon fuchsia reflected on the chartreuse palm of an all-seeing eye.  It is the prophecy!"

"Gonzo is awesome in and of itself, but gonzo can also be used to enhance the roleplaying experience in a variety of ways.  The problem is that, for many gamers, gonzo is inaccessible, hard to understand, and difficult to implement successfully."

Venger Satanis and I go wayback in time & he sent me a ton of titles to review as well as play. And that brings me to his magnus opus on gaming advice on bringing on the gonzo Primordial Chaos: Gonzo Like A Fucking Boss! So what is in this hundred and ten suppliment?! Well, this is a whole ton of articles that you can actually use to bring in the gonzo into your old school campaign such as bringing in the guest spot, the expect the unexpected table, nuturing your inner 14 old (to make the campaign more gonzo, Gonzo but not stupid, and much, much, more. Because this is a book end to his series of books such as 'How To Game Master Like a Fucking Boss'.   Primordial Chaos: Gonzo Like A Fucking Boss! By Venger Satanis has all of the editing, solid artwork, and good layout with a nice selection of cartography thrown in.

Primordial Chaos: Gonzo Like A Fucking Boss! By Venger Satanis brings the gonzo chaos because it's Venger's advice & ethos on OSR gaming from the bottom up. He adds in his ubiquitous random tables. These really bring this book into the realm of  usable and as a tool for the DM this is something we see time and again with Venger's gaming books. Primordial Chaos hits that vibe with a wet tenticled gusto and keeps going. This is a hundred and ten page book that hits the OSR rpg tool box approach right out of the gate. This is something we see time and again here. Is there a ton of sleazy and sexual material here?! Naw, not really instead there's tables like 'Find your PC's Doppleganger' and more. But is Primordial Chaos: Gonzo Like A Fucking Boss! By Venger Satanis actually useful?! In a word, oh yes! This supplement distills down a good deal of Venger's experiences and advice to both experienced dungeon masters and newbie players for a gonzo experience.  Venger's written more then three Cha'alt mega dungeons that have sold & continue to have solid sales.
So he knows a thing or two about gonzo dungeons, ruins, and adventures. This book distills that down and brings home the gonzo. And it shows with his latest adventure included in this supplement, 'Sent by The Gods'.
'Sent by The Gods' is a solid old fashioned dungeon crawl with Venger's usual flare thrown in.. The adventure does a good job of adding in and demonstrating Venger's ethos without overstaying it's welcome. And 'Sent By The Gods' can easily be added into the Cha'alt trilogy without creating a ripple at all in your campaign!  And that can also be said for Primordial Chaos: Gonzo Like A Fucking Boss! By Venger Satanis which I think is a fine addition to the Kortthalis Publishing family of books. Grab  Primordial Chaos: Gonzo Like A Fucking Boss! By Venger Satanis when it hits the shelves on Drivethrurpg.

OSR Review & Commentary On 'From The Beyond' By For The Wretched Rpg or Venger Satanis's Cha'alt

"The Dha’arma Initiative has once again experimented with things beyond their control. The once benevolent Dr. Chuuth’Nay has unleashed an evil the world of Cha’alt has not seen."

"It is contained inside a secret underground lab… for now. Can your party survive the horror From the Beyond? Or will they too, come to understand insanity as I have?"

Clocking in at forty pages plus maps 'From The Beyond' seems like the kind of gonzo adventure that mashes up Venger Satanis's Cha'alt with the Wretched Rpg and it does! Silvia Clemente of Red Room fame once again proves herself as a good OSR writer/designer with an out and out dungeon romp taking place in an underground lab on Cha'alt.
And things have gone down hill at the old Dha’arma Initiative laboratory. The whole facility has gone to the undead and it shows! There's monsters running all over this facility and causing all kinds of mayhem. The lab is a veritable maze with the facility filled to the brim with traps and tricks. Clearing this place isn't going to be easy at all. The writing is well done, the facility is dangerous, the layout is very well done, and the font is easily readable.
'From The Beyond' could give even the most jaded Cha'alt veteran adventurers a work out as they try to figure out what's happened at the facility. Or this adventure could be used as an introduction adventure for a group of Wretched New Flesh second edition operatives or agents to figure out what's happened to the 'From The Beyond' facility.
I don't want to spoilt the adventure but 'From The Beyond' is a five session or less adventure with lots of twists and turns! This adventure ties the PC's into a possible gut punch for all of Cha'alt.
'From The Beyond' could easily be tied into the Book 3 of the Cha'alt trilogy's campaign events. The adventure easily fits within the bounds of a full on campaign as a side quest or adventure.

But is 'From The Beyond' any good?! In a word, yes because of the fact that it can easily be adapted into your favorite OSR rpg or as a jump off point for an entire campaign centered on Cha'alt. This is an adventure that has legs. And hits the highs and lows of Cha'alt as a campaign setting easily.

Review & Application of Wretched Apocalypse - Second Edition By The Red Room For Cha'alt or OSR Campaigns

"Over the last couples of  days I've been regoing over Venger Satanis's Alpha Blue adventure titles but it was the Red Room's Wretched Apocalyse 2nd edition made the scene; "Wretched Apocalypse - Second Edition RELEASED. Now available at the Red Room store, @GiantSlayerRPGs

and . Later it will be available in print at Luludotcom. " And this is going to be pick right up from here on the blog.
moordereht.com/product/wretch Wretched Apocalypse is an expansion to the Wretched RPG universe, where the stark and unforgiving realms of post-apocalyptic science fiction come to life. This addition, while a standalone game in its own right, also serves as a versatile tool-set sourcebook, seamlessly integrating with any Wretchedverse game, such as Wretched New Flesh and Wretched Space."
And it got me thinking about Wretched Space second edition and especially Cha'alt volume one. Cha'alt is by it's very interstellar nature a post apocalytic science fiction campaign setting. Cha'alt has experienced a series of wars and weirdness involving the Great Old Ones. And this makes it perfect fodder for incorporating "Wretched Apocalypse - Second Edition. Why?! Because Wretched Apocalpyse Second edition is a three hundred and thirty three page power house tool kit for all of your post apocalypse OSR adventures.

Wretched Apocalyse 2nd edition has a ton of tools for creating the wastelands that you as the DM can challenge the players with. You've got everything from settlement generators, faction generators, antagonists, to full on example of two predone campaign settings for the Wretchedverse.
And this makes it perfect to inject into your favorite OSR rules set and in this case it's Cha'alt. Why Cha'alt?! Because of the huge influx of supernatural weirdness already baked into the Cha'alt setting.
What Cha'alt has going for it even though it's an interstellar post apocalpytic rpg campaign setting is the fact that it's still very high technologically capable. That is unless you get into the back wastelands. And this makes it ideal for use with Wretched Apocalyse 2nd edition. Using all of the tools therein to really flesh out these out lying areas of the Cha'alt wastes.
And Cha'alt is a place where the campaign setting is really ripe for exploitations by the powers that be in Alpha Blue's Federation. And or the powers behind
The Void Haven Outpost! So this directly connects back unto both the Outer Rim and Alpha Blue.
And it can be connected into Wretched Apocalyse 2nd edition easily! But is Wretched Apocalpyse 2nd edition worth getting?! On it's own merits most certainly. And there are serveral reasons for this. Reason one is the fact that Wretched Apocalypse - Second Edition has all of the tools to create a dream post apocalyptic interstellar colony, or wasteland apocalypse of the DM's design. Two Wretched Apocalpyse has all of the tools to plug right back into your favorite Wretchedverse rpg setting.

Review & Application of Shiny Object Syndrome By Venger Satanis For Cha'alt or OSR Campaigns Plus Tassie's Affair Session Report

Shiny Object Syndrome by Venger Satanis clocks in at seventeen pages of  solid female NPC's with a romantic difference for Cha'alt. And Shiny Object Syndrome has some solid NPC's that have been drawn out for the Cha'alt setting. But SOS could be used for any Science Fiction rpg or other OSR games with a Science Fiction element. Venger Satanis brings far more to the 17 pages then at first it seems;"The slow-burn or build-up when it comes to NPCs, specifically of a romantic type, is a lost art. You increase the tension and desire with anticipation. Don’t give the players what they want right away. Chances are, they don’t even know what they want. But if you dangle something alluring in front of them and then take it away, a few of them may get hooked. You can use this technique with almost anything, but Incremental Infatuation serves a singular purpose – make the PCs (perhaps just one or two, but that’s enough) excited about socially interacting with a particular woman. By the time they actually meet her later in the scenario or campaign, there’s something real, something special… a true connection. This connection raises the social interaction above and beyond the usual female NPC who’s just there to look pretty, get used by the PCs, or move the story along. She will hopefully fulfill another kind of purpose as either a long-term romantic interest or short-term wild night in Bangka’ak. However, because we took our time slowly building up the PC’s fascination, even a one-night stand will become a memorable diversion in your shared narrative."
So in seventeen pages in SOS we get four well drawn out NPC's with background, motivation, and a romantic lead in for a PC. And these women are all trouble or simply lead in's for the DM. However there are some serious consquences for the player's PC's with these ladies. And this happens with incremental infatuation with this NPC.

This factor allows the DM to gauge how deeply the PC is into this lady NPC. And in this afternoon's Wretched Space second edition game the Shiny Object Syndrome went into full effect with the PC's encountering Tassie within an elevator and the weird tentacle peusdo sexual fantasy in full effect. And then a couple of random rolls for motivation, why is she trouble, and the level we've got to find that girl.
Well the encounter caused the players to get involved and assumed that she was a part of the action of Alpha Blue. And so she was! I've been wanting to get the space brothel back into focus & Tassie works aboard Alpha Blue but also has connections to Cha'alt & The Void Haven Outpost! So this directly connects back unto both the Outer Rim and Alpha Blue.

Tassie was/is the escort to a rich merchant prince that has gone rogue and started. And this relates back to some of the events depicted in Alpha Blue's Alien Ass, Hydrogen Gas, or Cosmic Grass... No One Warps For Free. Tassie has heard and seen a bit too much. She's got secrets in her head that the Federation's officials would go away.
And boy does one of the PC's in today's game want to help her (pity him) because the group has three Federation assassin droids after them.

Now the PC's are aboard a strange star ship 'The Space Bird' with a pleasure cyborg, and assassin droids after them. They're  on auto pilot to Cha'alt but first they've got a refuel at a strange alien space ship truck stop. And that's where we ended!

Shiny Object Syndrome by Venger Satanis is perfectly suited to get your PC's into lots of trouble and the NPC ladies in this supplement are ideal made to cause max. havoc in your campaigns!

OSR Mini Campaign Commentary - 'His Flesh Becomes My My Key' By Venger Satanis - An Invisible College And Wretched Darkness Crossover mini campaign

"Then the last days were upon me, and the ugly trifles of existence began to drive me to madness like the small drops of water that torturers let fall ceaselessly upon one spot of their victims body, I loved the irradiate refuge of sleep. In my dreams I found a little of the beauty I had vainly sought in life, and wandered through old gardens and enchanted woods."
Ex Oblivione  (1921)
by H. P. Lovecraft

I keep seeing Venger and the Red Room advertising The Outer Presence & the Wretchedverse rpg material together. Ages ago I ran Venger's His Flesh Becomes My Key with Wretchploitation but after a quick rereading of the adventure I was mistaken. The better of the Wretchedverse games would definitely be Wretched Darkness and the Invisible College rpg for this game adventure. The PC's here would have to be anti heroes with connections to the cops, the mafia, or organized crime or both. These PC's might also have to have some supernatural angle. His Flesh Becomes My Key is going to be centered around thier campaign city setting. And having run this adventure during Covid, the use of a pandemic running riot in the background might be interesting. The PC's are called into the manhunt of a serial killer by an old partner Richard Black. And this is a serial killer  who is racking up the body count;"I'm not sure what this latest serial killer wants. That's what I'm struggling with now, why I called you. His pattern seems random… and yet, there's something here, possibly something I can use to catch him. This latest victim makes three - a young woman, a college student. She was returning home from a lecture at Miskatonic University. The bastard cut into her - mutilated her body with symbols. I'm still researching them. Have you ever read the work of Thomas Alhazred Lovejoy? Here's a better idea - let's go over the case in person. Have your group meet me for coffee later tonight. I could really use a second opinion, any insight that'll help us track this son of a bitch down." Richard Black doesn't show and things spiral into obilvion from there. This promotion for the Wretched Darkness rpg really plugs into weirdness and vile aspect of "His Flesh Becomes My Key.'

For the Invisible College of magus the events of 'His Flesh Becomes My Key' are spiraling outta of control. The cult of Typhon is going to be behind some of the events of this adventure but there's far more going on here. Reality itself could be unravelling and the players are going to need every trick in thier arsenal to reel it back in if its not too late.

"The other gods! The other gods! The gods of the outer hells that guard the feeble gods of earth! . . . Look away . . . Go back . . . Do not see! Do not see! The vengeance of the infinite abysses . . . That cursed, that damnable pit ."
The Other Gods
by H. P. Lovecraft

'His Flesh Becomes My Key' isn't simply investigation but it's got some real teeth to actually change a campaign across the board. And the player's PC's could be right in the middle of it. How? The player's PC's are deep into an almost but not quite John Carpenter apocalpyse film trilogy style situation. So there are going to be some very adult and hard choices along the way in this adventure.
And this is what makes 'His Flesh Become My Key' solid for this style of campaign. The choices have real impact within the confines of the 'cosmicism' of the adventure. There has to be heroics or anti heroics against the framework within the adventure. This 'philosphy' isn't what we as DM's and players think it is, the wiki entry goes; "The philosophy of cosmicism states that "there is no recognizable divine presence, such as a god, in the universe, and that humans are particularly insignificant in the larger scheme of intergalactic existence."
And this blatantly goes deeply against the grain of the magickal underpinnings of the 'Invisible College' rpg and even to certain extent 'Wretched Darkness'.
And in fact the key adventure events could lead into Wretched New Flesh Post Cards From Avalidad's Novanexus adventure.

Review & Commentary On "How To Game Master Like A F#%^ing Boss" By Venger Satanis For Any Old School or OSR Campaign

"What the Hell is this thing called Game Mastering?

"Nope, what you're considering here is not an introductory text.  I've been there and done that with How To Game Master Like A Fucking Boss.  No, this is for when you've been GMing for years and already know the basics."

"Are you missing something in your life?  Advanced Game Mastering Like A Fucking Boss attempts to weave philosophy and meaning and the search for a greater truth alongside the art of describing stuff, rolling dice, and pretending to be other people.  "

"Belief is immersion.  Does that mean super-belief can lead to super-immersion?  Perhaps...  That's but a single theme of this book, albeit a central one... a golden thread that carries the reader (that's you) from beginning to end.

At this point in the timeline, we're faced with an identity crisis.  What is the nature of Game Mastering, how should we proceed, why does this vocation define us?

The artwork in this book was created using Midjourney A.I.

I hope you enjoy this book as much as I enjoyed writing it.  Thanks for all your support, hoss.  Cha'alt!"

So Venger asked me to take a look at How To Game Master Like A Fucking Boss which is basically a hundred and eleven pages of DMing advice, observations, and even adventure design. There's quite a bit of the usual Venger material here & so lots of tentacles. Surprisingly there's also a lot of personal observations and more from Venger's perspective.
And this extending deeply into his gaming philosphy, and the brand that has become Venger Satanis. There's a ton in here about player choice, immersion, and more. And this goes deep into Venger's theories and ideas about adventure, dungeon design and more all within "How To Game Master Like A Fucking Boss ". And the book goes down several rabbit holes at once using the ideas & philosphies of Venger
. Of course all of the whole cloth of How To Game Master Like A Fucking Boss circles back to Venger's catch all setting Cha'alt. And that's great even the MidJourney artwork that Venger has used within How to Game Master Like a Fucking Boss circles back unto Cha'alt and that's great. This adds another layer of authenticity to the book. Is any of the philosphy, design advice, and more neccesarry!?! No but that's not the point of  "How To Game Master Like a Fucking Boss'. The point is that this book lays out Venger's approach to his style & veneer of DMing. Is "How To Game Master Like A Fucking Boss " any good?! With the success of the Cha'alt Trilogy and the continuation of the Venger brand 'How to Game Master like a Fucking Boss' is a solid add on to the Cha'alt line.
Because the sheer pile of 'Cha'alt material, adventures, etc. make this book a necessity.

Do we get a peek behind the curtain?! Yes & no. Yes we have a fully laid out apprach and design step by step set up guide and set of Venger stero instructions with "How To Game Master Like A Fucking Boss ". Is this book going to change your life?! No,but it might change how you DM adventures, approach Cha'alt, and take on the products of Venger Satanis. Can the advice, philosphy, and what not be applied to other old school & OSR games?! I believe it could easily be. And is it worth the ten dollar price tag?! Well considering the fact that there's quite a bit of bang for the buck I do believe so.

OSR Ship Wretched Commentary - Wretched Époque rpg, The Mysterious Island (1874) By Jules Verne, & H.P. Lovecraft's 'The Shadow Over Innesmouth

So today Easter Sunday & the Red Room has been on my mind all night. And I've been speeding through Jules Verne's Mysterious Island. Why?!" Because your all washed up on a deserted island " is all the campaign preparation you need! Seriously when it comes to the Wretchedverse especially Wretched Époque rpg the Verne book isn't even mentioned.

Who gives a crap about a book published in 1875? Well there's a bit more going on here according to the Mysterious Island Wiki entry; "The chronology of The Mysterious Island is incompatible with that of the original Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, whose plot begins in 1866, while The Mysterious Island begins during the American Civil War, yet is supposed to happen 16 years after Twenty Thousand Leagues." And this leads to some incredibly cool ideas here.
The island of the Mysterious Island is far more then it seems as the  island is revealed to be Captain Nemo's hideout, and home port of the Nautilus. Eventually Nemo identity is revealed to be; "Captain Nemo reveals his true identity as the lost Indian Prince Dakkar, son of a raja of the then-independent territory of Bundelkund and a nephew of the Indian hero Tippu-Sahib. After taking part in the failed Indian Rebellion of 1857, Prince Dakkar escaped to a desert island with twenty of his compatriots and commenced the building of the Nautilus and adopted the new name of "Captain Nemo". Before he dies, Nemo gives them a box of diamonds and pearls as a keepsake. Nemo's final words are "God and my country!" ("Independence!", in Verne's original manuscript). The Nautilus is scuttled and serves as Captain Nemo's tomb."
And this is where a Wretched Époque rpg campaign could begin. Nemo has terrorized the sea for ages and his legend still casts a long shadows across the world in 1872. And perhaps Lincoln Island wasn't the only base of Nemo's. Who cares right?! Plenty of people and governments are going to care. The innovations of Nemo's are not well known in the world of 1872. So a group of rag tag adventurers & criminals could theoritically be on the hunt of Nemo's trail. And one of this notorious criminal's bases are going to be bobby trapped.
And what happens if another 'Nemo' takes over the identity of the infamous villain & war criminal. The Nautilus plans might have circulated in certain criminal circles and among pirates. So this leads to a bunch of pirates and governments acclerating thier submarine programs. It might also lead to an explosion of underwater exploration. And these events could explode the agencies of piracy leading the world further down the path towards World War I. Within the world of the Parisian underworld the Deep Ones of Lovecraft fame could become very much a problem as the exploitation of the sea brings them to light.

The bringing into the light of the Deep Ones could be one of the things that Nemo feared. And this could lead to an all out war between the two powers for the fate of the Earth. Wretched Epoque is well equipped to deal with such a campaign.
Using Lovecraft's 'The Shadow Over Innesmouth'  as the campaign plan there's more then enough  rpg fodder there to create multiple sea side Deep One land based satilite colonies. Ultimately Nemo's departure could create a wide variety of sea based adventures with
Wretched Époque rpg

There's yet another gonzo option in the form of The Islands of P
urple Haunted Putrescene by Venger Satanis.
The islands could well be a Sword & Sorcery option that allows Wretched Epoque characters to venture deeply into a Sword & Sorcery campaign quite easily.

The Purple Islands having a portal or three into the Beyond is a given. The islands are some of the most lethal Beyond locations that PC's could encounter. There's a ton of adventure foddder within  The Islands of Purple Haunted Putrescene to pull from. Surviving a visit there is an entire other matter.

1d20 Random Weird Space Treasures Table For Venger Satanis's 'Cha'alt or Alpha Blue Rpg System For Your Your Old School Campaigns - Updated

There are many treasures in the depths of interstellar space and between the planes, things that are better left not found actually by the unsteady hands of adventurers and outlaws in the depths of space.
