The History of the "Dark angels": Part 3

The History of the "Dark angels" part 3

Hi guys, welcome to part 3 of the history of the "Dark angels" space marine chapter of space marines.

part 1 can be found here
and part 2 can be found here

The History of the Dark Angels: Part 3

Gene-seed

Successors

The Dark Angels and their known successor chapters are collectively known as the “Unforgiven" and generally maintain close links with each other.
The Chapter Masters of each chapter belong to the Inner Circle and also carry the honorific of "Grand Master of the Inner Circle". The Dark Angels Chapter Master is also the Inner Circle supreme leader and every single member of the circle answer to him when it comes to the hunt for the Fallen.
Dark Angel's Successor Chapters, much like themselves, will abandon everything for the hunt of the Fallen. It's known that the Dark Angels Legion sired at least three Second Founding chapters, although several other are also thought to hail from this Founding.
The History of the "Dark angels": Part 3

Culture

The organisation of the Dark Angels Chapter has been shaped primarily by events in its history, as a result it is different from that of any other. The Chapter is monastic in nature with much time being given over to worship and prayer. There are also many different levels within the Chapter which individuals may gradually rise through. On attaining each level, they find out a little more about the truth behind the Dark Angels' origins. Most Dark Angels themselves know nothing about the beginnings of the Chapter. It is only those at the very top who have learned the whole truth.
The History of the "Dark angels": Part 3

Organisation

To outside observers, the Dark Angels seem to follow the standard Codex astartes, as written by Roboute Guilliman, organization - comprising 10 companies of roughly 100 Marines plus Headquarters Staff, however they do have several organisational differences which are unique to them and their Successor Chapters -
  • Inner Circle: It is in the organization of the Dark Angels' higher levels that the chapter deviates from the dictates of the Codex Astartes, At the highest level of the Chapter is the Inner Circle, which consists of a number of officers who stand apart from the company organization, and include the Chapter's Librarians and Interrogator-Chaplains. Companies are each led by a Master, who is part of the Inner Circle.
The first two companies are also uniquely organized:
  • The Chapters First company is called the “Deathwing", which fights exclusively in (usually) Indominatus pattern Terminator Armour
  • The Second Company is known as the “RavenWing", which is a formation consisting entirely of fast and highly mobile units such as bike and “Land Speeder" squadrons.
The remainder of the Chapter is organized along Codex lines.

Recruitment

As the Dark Angels are no longer based on an actual world, they draw their recruits from a variety of planets, mainly highly primitive worlds. One of these worlds is the feral world “Kimmeria", from which the current chapter master “Azrael" himself was recruited. Representatives of the Dark Angels visit each recruiting world once within a normal human's lifetime, and take the strongest juveniles from the population. Each recruit is thoroughly screened, and from the moment he is accepted into the Chapter as a Space Marine his past becomes irrelevant.
After the Heresy, the Dark Angels recruited from a single planet (known as the “Plains world"). Sometime before the 41st Millennium a group of returning Deathwing found that their planet had been overrun fifty years earlier by “Genestealers", with only a few untainted humans remaining. The Terminators, whose duty and honour required the extermination of the genestealers, prepared themselves for battle. Because the odds of their success were nearly non-existent, the Terminators engaged in their native death ritual. Instead of anointing their skin with white ash, they anointed their armour. The Terminators cleansed the world and rescued the enslaved populace, and in honour of those few Terminators, their armour was ever after white. Meanwhile, the Dark Angels leadership, the Inner Circle, recognized the folly of relying upon one planet for manpower and so diversified their recruiting grounds.
The History of the "Dark angels": Part 3

Headquarters

The ruins of Caliban are located in the “Cadian” sector, close to the “Eye of terror". Prior to the Great Crusade and the Horus Heresy, the planet of Caliban was covered with lush forests inhabited by creatures warped by Chaos. The humans of the planet were a proud, martial people forced to live in great fortress monasteries of stone.
The Dark Angels rebuilt their fortress-monastery on the asteroid that had borne the old one, drilling deep into the bedrock and rebuilding the ruins. The new fortress is known officially as The Tower of Angels, but is more commonly referred to as The Rock. The Rock has been equipped with warp engines, enabling faster-than-light transit through the Immaterium.
The warrens beneath The Rock are where the Dark Angels bring their fallen brethren to be redeemed by their Interrogator chaplains It is believed by the inquisition to hold many other secrets.
However, even this pales in comparison to the greatest secret held by the Dark Angels. This secret is known only to the “Watchers in the dark" and to the Emperor himself. Deep within the bedrock of the asteroid which is their home there is a solitary chamber. In this chamber, attended to by the Watchers in the Dark, lies the sleeping form of Lion El'Jonson.

The History of the Dark Angels: Part 2

The History of the Dark Angels: Part 2

The History of the Dark Angels: Part 2

Hi guys welcome to Part 2 of the History of the Dark angels space marine chapter. if you missed part 1, you can find that here

Parft 2: The Horus Heresy and the Heresy-era Dark Angels

During the Horus Heresy, the Dark Angels were far from Terra, campaigning on the shield worlds, and were unable to participate directly in the events taking place there. Warmaster Horus ordered the Night Lords to intercept them on the Eastern Fringe and prevent them from aiding the Emperor, but after ambushing and destroying much of the Night Lords fleet in the Thramas Crusade the Dark Angels were eventually able to set course for Terra. Their impending arrival, closely following that of the Ultramarines and Space Wolves legions, (who had overcome similar obstacles), forced Horus to gamble everything on a duel with the Emperor, his former master. Horus was defeated by the Emperor, although the Emperor himself was fatally wounded and therefore had to be entombed within the life-preserving mechanism of the Golden Throne. El'Jonson was stricken with grief over the fact that he had not been able to protect the Emperor against Horus.

The History of the Dark Angels: Part 2

After the Heresy, the Dark Angels helped restore order to the Imperium. However, during this time, the Dark Angels who had then been left behind on Caliban became agitated at being forced to essentially babysit a backwater planet. This led to the leader of the garrison, Luther, turning to the evil Gods of Chaos, who had just been defeated with the death of their champion Horus during the Heresy.

The Dark Angels returned to Caliban after the war, but they were fired upon by the planetary defences. They were forced to assault their own homeworld, where they found that their brethren had betrayed them. In a duel which mirrored that of the Emperor and Horus, Luther and Lion El'Jonson fought, resulting in Luther mortally wounding his former friend. Luther became insane upon realizing he had struck down his close friend and was captured. In a huge fit of rage at being defeated once again, the Chaos Gods opened a warp rift in the planet which scattered the traitorous "Fallen Angels" throughout the galaxy. One of the "Fallen Angels" who escaped is Cypher, who reportedly took with him the Lion Blade, the sword of El'Jonson, when he was sent through the warp.
The Betrayal on Caliban.

The Dark Angel space fleet also bombarded the planet mercilessly, and this caused the structure of the dying planet to collapse. The bombardment, combined with the newly formed warp rift, broke the planet up and it is now a huge asteroid field.

The History of the Dark Angels: Part 2

This betrayal has tainted their honour in the eyes of the Dark Angels themselves. Given that the event was purely within the Legion itself, and was on a world far from Terra, nobody outside of the Legion knows it occurred. Within the Dark Angels Chapters itself, only the elite veterans are permitted this knowledge - in the modern Dark Angels Chapter, only the Deathwing and senior officers know of this secret. The Chapter leadership will go to great lengths to ensure that this knowledge does not reach the Imperium at large, even at times going so far as to disobey direct orders from Inquisitors and cause overly curious individuals to "disappear".

Only the most senior members, known to the Dark Angels, as the Inner Circle, know the greatest secret - that Luther, the great traitor, is still alive and insane, living in a cell deep within the Rock. Lion El'Jonson's body was supposedly never found; Luther claims, in his near-senseless mutterings, that the Lion is very near and will return and forgive him. The Lion actually sleeps in the most secret chamber in the rock, his presence known only by the Watchers in the Dark and the Emperor himself, until the time he will awaken and lead his chapter on a new and even greater crusade. That day, so Luther said to current Supreme Grand Master Azrael, is almost at hand.
Horus Heresy Aftermath

The History of the Dark Angels: Part 2

Caliban was destroyed during the Betrayal, shattered by the warp rift and orbital bombardment. The remain of the planet now form a sizeable asteroid field. The largest piece, which survived due to the massive void shields in operation around the largest fortress-monastery, called the Tower of Angels, was hollowed out and became a gigantic spaceship/monastery which is now the home of the Dark Angels chapter. This ship is known simply as The Rock. Sometime after the Betrayal, the Dark Angels changed their primary heraldry colour from black to dark green.

This story of treachery and betrayal is the Dark Angels' secret shame. None know of it other than some of the Dark Angels, their Successor Chapters and, perhaps, the Emperor on his Golden Throne.(oh, and yourself!) Within the Chapter itself very few Brother-Marines know exactly what happened during those fateful days.

Stay tuned for part 3!

The History of the Dark Angels. Part 1.

The Dark Angels Chapter of Space Marines
The History of the Dark Angels. Part 1.

Hi guys, well today is the start of a new venture, we are going to be looking at all the armies of the 41st (and probably 31st and onwards millenium.

The Dark Angels Chapter.
History of the Dark Angels Space Marine Chapter:

The Great Crusade Era Dark Angels.

The Dark Angels were the first Space Marine Legion created by The Emperor. When the Primarchs were scattered throughout the galaxy by the Ruinous Powers (otherwise known as Chaos) while still in their incubation capsules, the child who would later be named Lion El'Jonson arrived on the distant planet of Caliban, which apparently bore some resemblance to early medieval Terra. A local named Luther, who discovered El'Jonson and prevented his death at the hands of his fellow knights, was a member of the Order, an organization of knights, and the two become close friends. The Primarch eventually became the leader of the Order and the whole of Caliban itself.

Meanwhile, unknown to the people of Caliban, the Emperor of mankind was waging what was known as the Great Crusade across the galaxy, reuniting humanity and purging entire star systems of their alien oppressors. As the Imperium's wave of conquest advanced across the galaxy, Imperial scouts rediscovered the isolated world of Caliban. It was not long before the Emperor of mankind was at last reunited with his lost son, El'Jonson and was filled with joy as a father would be on finding his lost son. The Emperor's first action was to give Lion El'Jonson control of his 1st Legion. This legion of Space Marines had been created by the Emperor from its Primarch's DNA samples and had fought alongside the other Imperial forces as the Great Crusade was waged across the galaxy.

The Dark Angels Chapter of Space Marines

The 1st Legion was thereafter known as the "Dark Angels", in reference to a Caliban legend that told of great, righteous heroes who held back monsters. Announced by the Primarch, the connotation was in fact first drawn by Luther himself, who quoted a section from the legend upon first seeing Astartes descending using jump packs: "And the angels of darkness descended upon pinions of fire and light...the great and terrible dark angels."

The Dark Angels Chapter of Space Marines

Caliban was made the homeworld of the Dark Angels and the whole of the Order moved to join the ranks of the Astartes. Those knights who were still young enough had the Legion's gene seed implanted within them. Those too old for this process underwent surgery to transform them into elite warriors of the Imperium. Although they were not full Space Marines, their enhancements granted them special abilities and a lifespan beyond those of normal men. The first to be brought into the Legion in this way was Luther, who became Jonson's second-in-command, just as he always had been within the Order. However, the Dark Angel's contributions to the Great Crusade had barely begun when the Lion sent Luther and a small contingent of Dark Angels back to Caliban, purportedly to garrison the world and increase the speed and quality of the training given to the Legion's recruits. Whatever the reason, the force sent back felt disgraced and rejected.

The Great Crusade had to go on: there were countless human worlds that were still under the influence of Chaos or suppressed by the harsh rule of alien races. So it was that the Lion and many of the Dark Angels continued on the Emperor's Crusade for the reunification of humanity while Luther was left behind in charge of the remainder of the Legion on Caliban. Despite the importance of Luther's position, it was not one that suited his ambitious personality.

The Dark Angels Chapter of Space Marines

Lion El'Jonson and his Legion performed well during the Great Crusade, although during a particular battle, he and Leman Russ, Primarch of the Space Wolves Legion, came to blows over the latter's action during the siege of the Crimson Fortress. This event began a feud which still continues strong in the 41st millennium, usually taking the form of a ritualistic duel between two elected champions, although it has been known to manifest itself in a very violent manner.
As Jonson's fame spread throughout the galaxy and reports of his great deeds and prowess in battle reached the Legion's home world, Luther felt robbed of his share of the glory. He wanted the fame and recognition that he felt he deserved as Jonson's equal. His role as planetary governor of some half-forgotten backwater world seemed more and more to him like an insult. The seed of jealousy and dissension that had been planted within Luther when Jonson was made the Grand Master of the Order now began to grow and rankle within his heart as the Primarch became more and more celebrated and famous.

Part 2 follows soon!

Raven Guard Space Marine Bike Squad with Grav Guns. Scifiwargamers, Finished 9-3-15
Hi guys, well they are finally finished.

Ive finally done the dreaded bike squad! i have to admit, these guys almost put me off painting black for good. i sadly am not much of a fan of the generic biker miniature but i kind of needed these in my army!

Raven Guard Space Marine Bike Squad with Grav Guns. Scifiwargamers, Finished 9-3-15
Had i not been  little indecisive over what chapter to paint these, they would probably have been finished a couple of weeks ago.

Anyway I've now got a quick and easy method of painting back that i like so the next Raven guard squads should be quick!

Do you run grav gun biker squads?

How do you get on with them?

Top 5: Space Marines Elite Sculpts.

Top 5 Space Marine Elites.

Hi guys, its time for another top 5 rundown, I myself am a big fan of these Top 5's and it appears you lot are also!

Today its my top 5 Space Marine Elite choices. Please bear in mind, these are not my top 5 to use in game, just my favorite units to look at!

Ok lets begin,

#5 The Legion of the Damned.

These guys have been around for ages, and been in the books for as long as i can remember, Theres something awesome about that black, fire and bone combination. I really want to do an army of these guys someday!

#4 Space Marines Stern Guard Veterans.

The Space Marines Sternguard veterans are pure awesome. I think its something about those combi bolters. Very utilitarian! This is also another unit i need to buy more of, even if it is only to convert the models into normal tactical marines!

 #3 Space Marine Tactical Terminators.

Wow, terminators. I'm still on the fence as to which "pattern" of terminator armour i prefer, The classic look here, or one of the two new Forge world variations. i will let you guys know when i make up my mind!

#2 Space marine Assault Terminators.

At a close second its the space marine close combat assault terminators, I love the way these guys are deckd out in gear ready to give someone a pasting close up. i also love the weapons these guys have, hammers, shields and lightning claws. Amazing stuff!

And finally onto my favorite Space Marine Elite Choice....

#1 The Space Marine Dreadnought.

How, may i ask, can you beat a walking tank? Dreadnoughts have been one of the most awesome an diconic units in the game, even in Rogue trader times. Although the sculpts back then did look a little silly, even if they did inspire the current forge world contemptor kits!

So there you have it, My Top 5 space marine elite choices.

Do you agree or disagree? What would you have picked?

Showcase: Space Marine Imperial Fist Vindicators.

Imperial Fist Vindicators.

Hi people, Today i am showing you some old Space Marines Imperial Fist Vindicators, I think I painted These Vindicators way back in 2007, just before i Moved House.

Of all the plastic Space Marine Tanks that Games Workshop produce, Aside from the Land Raider, The Space Marine Vindicator has always been my favorite. The Combination of that huge gun, the massive shield on the front and the squat nature of the Space Marine Rhino itself combine to make a lovely looking model.

I'm not sure why i decided to buy 3 Space Marine Vindicators let alone paint them! But those were the days where i would buy 3 of everything. Weird.

These were also part of my Space Marines Imperial Fists army, and possibly these Space Marine Vindicators were my favorite unit in the whle army itself.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy seeing these old models i painted. sadly this was me painting before the days of "weathering" so they look quite clean compared to currently produced Vindicators by various painters!.

Do you own Space Marine vindicators? Why did you buy them?

Top 5 Space Marine Tanks.

The Top 5 Space Marine Tanks.

Hey everyone, its time for another top-5 rundown. Today its the top5 Space Marine Tanks!

This time i thought i would allow forge world models into the count..

#5: Deimos Pattern Rhino.

I do not know about you guys but I think this model is 1000 times better than the standard Games Workshop Rhino, and they havn't changed all that much to do it! a great model and I am sure you will agree.

#4:Deimos Pattern Predator.

Just like the Deimos pattern Rhino above, i think this is a brilliant effort from the Forge World team. They have taken a very plain and basic, almost toy like kit in the original Predator, and adapted it into this lovely piece. Some say it looks a little silly with an almost Dalek like turret, but i still say its awesome!

#3: Space Marine Vindicator.

With that Huge cannon up front and that huge dozer blade, this thing just screams BEAST, its a combination of those two things that make this look very imposing. Take away the Dozer blade and it doesnt look half as good! This model is a HUGE improvement over the previous model, and i think that this one is also based on the old Forge World kit version. is there a pattern forming here? maybe..

#2: Land raider Crusader.

With all those anti infantry guns this thing looks cool as!, The Phobos variant is itself very good but this versions just meaty! I'm not much of a fan of it in game, but in the display cabinet? Yes please!

#1: Land Raider Spartan.

Yes thats right, The Land Raider Spartan is my favorite tank. What an awesome model this is, take an already awesome model, the Land Raider, make it even more huge and add more guns, get Forge World to design it and you have resin gold. This is a must have for any Space Marine player or collector! (its on my list before you ask!)

So there you have it, my top 5 Space Marine Tanks. Do you agree or disagree?

Showcase: Imperial Fist Landspeeders.

Imperial Fist Land Speeders

Hi Ladies and Gentlemen.

Todays showcase is a sadly small affair, as i've still to get rhough all my old work that i want to get posted up before i move onto the newer stuff! (luckily there isnt a lot left to show!)

Again these are part of my old imperial fists collection/army from around circa 2007/2008.

Heres the pics.

Obviously i took these pictures way before I had a light box so I am sorry if its hard to see them!

Also heres a pic i have finally found of the aforementioned Imperial Fist army. Oh the memories!

Top 5: Space Marine HQ sculpts. (Not Including Forge World.)

Top 5: Space Marine HQ Sculpts.

Hey people, hows your weekend going? I'm excited as i have a huge game of Talisman to play tonight, and i reckon its going to be Epic. I'm tempted to take some pictures of the occasion as its sure to be a blast.
Its a shame the city expansion wasnt released earlier so we could have used it. oh well!

Anyway, onto todays Top-5. Today we will have a look at my favorite Space Marine HQ sculpts (not forge world) These will probably be contested by you guys as everyone has rather string opinions on these matters!

On to the run down!

At 5, its The Dark Angel Chief Librarian Himself, Ezekiel.

I have liked this sculpt for years, it truly is a testament to its quality when after at least a decade i still hold it up there amongst the better sculpts.

At 4, its Korsarro Khan, Leader of the White Scars.

Hang on, the pose is almost similar to the guy above! maybe that is why i like it? The real reason i like it is the dynamism of it. its not a static arms out pose, its actually in a pose that you might see used by a space marine in combat!

At 3, Its The current Chapter Master of the Flesh Tearers, Gabriel Seth.

Wow, another running with your sword out pose. maybe i just like this pose! I also think the Flesh Tearers colour scheme is rather awesome!

At 2, its the Space Marine Terminator chaplain.

I think people would find it hard to disagree with this one. its suitably badass. What i like is the way its sculpted to really look like a solid armour wearer marine. he looks VERY tough.

And number one on my list, Its Captain Lysander, First Captain of the Imperial Fists.

Why hasnt this fellow been promoted to chapter master over that old fuss pot Vladimir Pugh yet? Maybe he will get an awesome model himself. Even if he does he would be unlikely to top this beast.

I liked this model so much i used it in my Rainbow Warriors HQ model.

Thats it for this top 5, do you agree with the list? What do you think I have missed?

Tactica: Space Marines Underused Units.

Tactica: Space Marines.

 Explosivo111 – Sci-fi wargamers Tactica Blog
Blog 2 – Power of the Unknown
Part 1 – Codex: Space Marines

Greetings sci fi wargamers! Explosivo111 here with another edition of my tactica series. Unfortunately due to the snow closing 95% of England down, I haven’t been able to play any 40k so this time I’m going start a new irregular mini-series for my blog called ‘power of the unknown’ where I will look at the little used units in 40k that you rarely see on the gaming table. These units, when given some care and attention, can really surprise your opponent.

Whirlwind Tank

The Whirlwind, underrated?

Most players look at the whirlwind tank and say ‘vindicator’. Why wouldn’t they? The vindicator has double the whirlwinds strength and the mighty AP of 1. I have had a whirlwind in my collection since 3rd edition; it’s horribly built because of the hefty metal cannons that were provided in them days but still has a place in my heart.
I must admit when I first started playing with the gaming group I have now, I didn’t use my whirlwind at all but that all changed when I was having problems with a very sniper heavy Eldar list (never EVER underestimate Eldar snipers). They were picking off my terminators and Lysander with ease as well as destroying my sternguard which was leaving me without a large amount of my points. They were really hard to remove due to the 2+ cover save they were receiving and it was difficult to assault them because it pulled my attention away from the rest of the game. Eventually it occurred to me that a whirlwind could solve all my problems, it has specific ammunition which ignores cover which with its strength and ap meant I was killing the pathfinders on a 3+ (provided I hit) this meant I could easily destroy them from a nice safe distance at the low cost of 85 points per game!
Sure whirlwinds fragile but due to their reputation at the moment, most players won’t even bother wasting a shot on them….until it’s too late!

Techmarine/Master of the Forge

Master of the forge. master of the battle?

For some this is an obvious choice in a lot of lists, mainly for allowing dreadnoughts as heavy support but techmarines can have their own uses. A lot of space marine lists nowadays have the usual TH/SS terminator death star in a Land Raider but since 6th edition vehicles have become a tad more delicate due to hull points. Slam a techmarine into your death star squad and that problem goes away.
Now I know some of you are saying a techmarine is a waste of an elites slot, but if you kit this badboy out with a full servo harness then he really can become a combat monster in himself!

Scout Bikers

Scout bikers, Useful?

Scout bikers truly are a hideously underused unit! The trick is to look at these as a unit that is eventually going to die, it’s up to you to decide WHEN they die. Kit them out with a teleport homer and the bikes combined with the pre-game scout move means they can easily get to an objective early in the game and use there teleport homer to bring down a more powerful unit to hold the objective.
As an added bonus these bikers can be very useful during the scenario ‘The Scouring’ whereby fast attack units become scoring themselves.

Attack Bike Squadron

It baffles me that I never see an attack bike squadron on the gaming table. 3 of these with a multi melta each comes to only 150 points! These can move 12” and fire the multi melta due to relentless giving them a huge 36” threat range. The advent of the jink special rule in 6th edition means these guys got a bit more survivable as they don’t have to go flat out and forgo shooting to receive a cover save.
It’s also worth noting that attack bikes have two wounds each and will need strength 10 to instakill them.

So that rounds up another blog. I hope I’ve given all you space marine players something to think about next time you’re writing an army list, and I hope I’ve put a little bit of fear into you non-space marine players.
As always please leave comments in the section below if you have any suggestions/comments/abuse and I’ll be sure to get back to you ASAP.
