The Battle of Stackville

The quiet town of Stackville was rather happy to stay quiet. But then the civil war came to town.

Confederate troops stationed nearby the town found themselves directly in line of a Union army heading south.

The Rebels make good use of the stone walls around the town of Stackville.

The Union army advances up to take on the Confederates.

The confederates give the Union boys a friendly welcome.

The Union pressure the Rebel flanks while attacking the town in the centre.

Both sides trade shots as the Union get closer to Stackville.

The first charges from the Union are repulsed by the defenders.

The Rebels reinforce the town.

The Union build up to another attack.

The Union charge the town again, but it is the same result.

More pressure now from the Union right flank.

Still the Rebels hold out.

Union Zouaves are in the thick of the fighting.

By night fall the Confederates were still in possession of the town. The Union had no choice but to slink away to fight another day.

Rules used were Rank and File.

The Williamite war at Conquest 2016

Last Saturday some of the lads put on a demo game at this years Conquest wargaming event. Each year we try to put on something different for our demo games and this year it was a game from the Williamite war.

There were some lovely painted units involved in this game, so much so that I spent more time taking photos of units rather than the game itself. I'm not too sure about who is who so I am not going to attempt a report. Except to say that there was attacks on the flanks between various mounted units after which the infantry moved forward to finish things off.

The figures are from the collections of David, Wayne and Geoff. All Front Rank figures too, I think.
David also hand painted the flags for his units.

Rules used were slightly modified Rank and File rules.

AWI using Rank and File

Last weeks game for the gang was set during the American Revolution.

The scenario idea was based on the battle of Brandywine.

The Americans were defending along a river and were attacked from the opposite side but also attacked in their flank.

 The Americans could setup anywhere along their side of the river.

 The game began with the arrival of the first British brigade. 

 The first brigade started putting the pressure on the American lines.

 The second brigade of red coats arrived on the flank of the Americans. The Americans were forced to turn some of their troops to meet the threat .

 On the American left both sides were happy to trade shots across the river.

 By now the third British brigade had arrived and was moving down between the second brigade and the river.

 The pressure was mounting for the Americans.

 Down at the American left casualties were mounting on both sides of the river, but

 at the other end it was all on! Repeated charges from the British were slowly pushing back the Americans but they were making a good fight of it. Some excellent shooting from the defenders was making life difficult for the British.

 Although far from being destroyed the American army needed to protect Philadelphia and so were now being forced to withdraw in front of the advancing British.

Conquest 2015

Last weekend was Conquest.  This year we decided to do a 28mm Napoleonic game.

Set somewhere in Spain and using the Rank and File rules.

 The battle was mainly for control of the crossroads in the centre with points for taking the two towns.

 The British and Spanish troops had entered one of the towns and the Spanish guerrillas had taken over the vineyard.

 The French entered the other town and had their guns and dragoons covering the crossroads.

 British marines open fire on the French from behind the stone wall.

 The British had control of the farm buildings near the crossroads but it wasn't long until it was under attack from the French.

 The vineyard also came under attack.

 After some heavy fighting around the village the French withdrew.

 The British sent the Highlanders forward to support the defenders of the farm.

Looks like the Spanish have moved the vines away from French hands!

 On the other flank, near the river, the British launched an attack on the French held town. Both town sectors would eventually fall into British hands but the cost of this action in lives was high. Back on the far flank, the French having given up on taking the town began shelling the town with howitzer fire. With the town on fire the British had to fall back out of the town.

The game ended with one town ablaze another in British hands and the crossroads still between both armies. Slight victory for the British.
