Zootcase - We Make it Happen (1996)

How to describe this one? It's perched on the edge of those early 90s white funk bands but the vocalist and possible band leader is black so "WHITE-funk" doesn't work. They have a slight heavy metal vibe but all of their songs are mellow paced. They do have one blues song but they don't come across as a blues band despite what this eBay seller says. ($168.99? Come on now.)

They're a three-piece rock band with a familiar style that eludes description.

The one band I can think of that they sound closest to is King's X. That might be a lazy description but that's all I got.

1 We Make it Happen

2 The Moon is Full

3 Alice Don't Cry

4 Since You Left Me Baby

5 Where is My Heart?

6 Could This be True

7 Tell Me

Randy Mason - Demo Tape (1991)

Randy Mason is from New York. She plays guitar, she writes music, and she sings. But she's no "singer-songwriter" she's more of an iconic lead singer for a band that just never really happened when the environment was fertile.

This demo tape is from 1991 and the sound is too professional sounding for a demo tape.

As far as I know the only official release that she did was a 5-song EP from 1998 called "Halfway, Through the Night" and a song called "The River Runs" that she released in 2017.

You can hear the EP and the single here. I see no evidence of this demo tape anywhere online. None of the songs from this tape are on the other releases except for the song "Black Dove" which was re-recorded.

She's not only a musician but she's also a writer.

She wrote a novel that was released in 2018 called "Falling Back to One"

She made a trailer for her book:

Check out her OFFICIAL SITE (which doesn't mention this demo tape at all).

(Don't call the number on the tape. It's from 1991. You know damn well this isn't her number anymore.)

1 The Sapphire's Time

2 Black Dove

3 Without Love

4 Oriel

Moira and the Mice

Moira and the Mice wasn't really a punk rock band as much as they were a rock band from the punk era who came from Wales and I don't think they ever broke up. They might be playing a show this weekend for all I know.

They had a lot of original tunes but only recorded a few of them. Six that I know of on these two records.

Here's a great song that they played live but didn't release on a record.

Somebody posted a full show on YouTube (audio only) of a show they did at the Trubadour in Port Talbot in 1981.

Caught In The Act - Caught In The Act 12" EP (1984)

There are different kinds of 'new wave'. The most popular was the pop-styled keyboard-driven dance type.
This New York band is new wave but it's more of the "female punk vocals, distorted rock guitar, squeaky no-wave saxophone" variety. No keyboards and nothing to dance about. Not great, but really good.

1 Caught in the Act
2 My Imagination
3 Watch Out for that Dike Ike
4 Rat Race
5 Dance with Me
6 Into the Future

Vegimite Reggae

A - Too Many Years
B - Love is Gone

Trendy Ex-Hippies (1987)
1 Send it Out
2 Open the Door
3 Way Away
4 Rude Boy Rude Girl
5 For Love
6 Faces
7 Fat Girl
8 Illusions
9 I Need You
10 Latin Lover

*Stairway to Heaven

I posted the album on Tone and Wave many years ago. I knew the song Rude Boy Rude Girl so I was expecting a ska album. I was wrong. With a name like "Vegimite REGGAE" most people would assume they'd play a bit of reggae on occasion but that's not the case. Like Johnny Rivers' "L.A. Reggae" album which had no reggae at all. I was disappointed with it but I already knew what I was getting myself into when I got the single so I was less judgemental and I actually like the single quite a bit.

The Safe - Pleasure Grooves (1987)

This is a rock/new wave band and this may be the only thing they released.

This record is notable for me because it is the first record I bought with my first paycheck from my current job many years ago. It was sold on eBay as a ska record but there is no ska on here. There is a slight ska/island influence on a couple songs but only very slight.
The song "Untrue Untrue" should have been a best-selling single.

Listen to "Untrue Untrue"

1 Untrue Untrue
2 Banana Men
3 Genie
4 Father Marconi
5 The Natural
6 It's an Illusion
