Author Interview: Gabrielle Harbowy Discusses Her New Novel Pathfinder Tales: Gears of Faith + GIVEAWAY

Today we have a very special Q&A post with the author of Pathfinder Tales: Gears of Faith, Gabrielle Harbowy plus a giveaway of her new novel!

pathfinder tales gears of faith by gabrielle harbowySynopsis:

"Pathfinder is the world's bestselling tabletop role-playing game―now adapted as a series of novels.

Keren is a sworn knight of Iomedae, proper and disciplined in every way. Her girlfriend, Zae, is the opposite―a curious gnome cleric of the clockwork god, who loves nothing more than the chaos of her makeshift hospitals. When a powerful evil artifact is stolen from a crusader stronghold, both knight and gnome are secretly sent to the great city of Absalom to track down the stolen bloodstone.

Sure, they may not be the most powerful or experienced members of their organizations, but that’s the whole point―with legendary champions and undead graveknights battling at every turn in their race to recover the stone, who’ll notice one young knight and her gnome? All they have to do is stay alive long enough to outsmart a thief capable of evading both gods and heroes."

1) Kara: Obviously, you love Pathfinder and this really shows in your level of detail in descriptions and imagination in the book. What is your perfect character and how does he/she differ from Keren and Zae?

Gabrielle: My perfect character is one I’ve never played before!

In writing this novel and, essentially, having to play all the characters and understand the mechanics of a lot of different classes and options, I’ve definitely learned to step outside my comfort zone. I love playing healers and support classes, and that’s what I’ve always gravitated toward in tabletop RPGs, but now I want to dig into all the options and try everything at least twice.

I don’t roleplay Keren or Zae at the table, mostly because I don’t want to have to keep novel continuity separate from in-game continuity. “Remember the time we-- oh, right. That didn’t actually happen.” It would make things twice as complicated for me if they diverged! My current Pathfinder characters are a haunted Oracle whose belongings get shifted around by the spirits of everyone she’s killed; a very impatient Tian human fighter (of the “I respect your desire to negotiate, but can’t we just kill all the things?” variety); and a Tengu (ravenfolk) mage.

2) Kara: What advice would you give readers and gamers new to Pathfinder and Pathfinder Tales?

Gabrielle: Pathfinder is a collaborative game and Pathfinder players are very helpful people, so don’t be concerned about knowing every rule before you show up at the table. You can use a premade character to get a feel for things without getting bogged down by multiple books’ worth of rules, or to try different classes to you find one you enjoy. It’s totally acceptable to say “Okay, how do I roll for that?” or “Where do I find that on my character sheet?” or “Here’s what I want my character to do. Can I do that? What’s the best way to go about it?” and everyone will chime in to help you do your best. Pathfinder works best when the party is a team that strategizes together, so new blood is always welcome because it brings new possibilities to the table.

For readers new to Pathfinder Tales, my advice is basically the same. The novels might require you to piece some things together from context, but the novels (or series of novels within the Pathfinder Tales line) are engineered to stand alone. They’re enhanced by knowledge of the game lore, because you’ll recognize things and appreciate references, but specific knowledge of the game isn’t necessary to enjoy the novels. They’re set all over the known Pathfinder world, and they’re all meant to be accessible starting points.

3) Kara: There's quite a bit of in-depth mechanical description in Gears of Faith, and the Clockwork Cathedral is amazing! How did you come up with that and the descriptions for the clockwork devices?

Gabrielle: One of the exciting things about writing tie-in fiction is that you can take something that fascinates you, that’s just a concept or a couple of sentences in a reference book, and really flesh it out and make it your own. I find the Clockwork Cathedral fascinating, and I had a lot of fun translating its bare bones into a living, functioning building. The shape of the Cathedral was already in the canon, as were the giant gears that swing down at varying times to block off the hallways, and the fact that there are no amenities inside. I got to think realistically about what that would mean, what it would feel like and look like, and describe that through the wonder and incredulity of someone new to it all. I particularly enjoyed exploring the contrast between Zae’s first impressions, being overwhelmed by the eccentricity of the place, and the total nonchalance of her fellow students for whom it’s become commonplace.

Sometimes the ideas drive themselves. Without giving away too much, I’ll say that, for example, when a character says something, “be careful not to get stuck inside the gears,” it becomes kind of necessary and obvious that, at some point, someone’s going to be in danger of getting stuck inside the gears!

For the mechanical devices, I did a lot of research. I looked at spells in the game and thought about which of them were practical to house inside of objects and then activate, and how to make the object and its activation method appropriate to the device.

The failed devices were the easier ones to come up with than the working ones, because that just meant taking things to their logical extremes. I wasn’t bound by practicality. Like, take the Bleed spell. That spell means that someone who’s dying and has been stabilized, becomes unstable and resumes bleeding out. Well, you don’t need to go to the effort of magic to craft an object that can do that, when you could just use a sword!

Some of the more whimsical devices didn’t make it into the book, just because I had to strike a balance between creating fun objects and remembering that the characters were under a bit of a time crunch to solve the central mystery...but I’m holding on to the blueprints of those objects for future use.

4) Kara: I loved the diversity in this book! Zae was my favorite character because she's unique, smart, and quirky, and yet I admired Keren's inner drive. Their relationship seems like a good partnership. What did you most want to convey to your readers through the diversity of characters and relationships?

Gabrielle: Thank you! What I really wanted most was to normalize the diversity. Here’s a couple who’ve been together a while and aren’t in the new romance phase of a relationship, and they’ve obviously made it work. It’s not a coming out story, because coming out isn’t the only story. And there’s no way to dismiss it with “well, it won’t last.” It’s lasted. It doesn’t matter that they’re both female, or that they’re not both human, or whatever. They’re people having genuine emotions and genuine quirks and flaws. All of the things that might get them looked at askance in our real world just aren’t a big deal.

I have a transgendered main supporting character, and again it’s not a big deal. There are also a few non-binary characters sprinkled in conspicuously (one “extra” in the Clockwork Cathedral is a male gnome in eyeliner and a skirt), and no one cares, singles them out, or places different expectations on them.

In our world, people are still marginalized for these things. And because they’re not what our society sees as its default, it’s rare for people who identify in diverse ways to be able to find themselves depicted in fiction. My intent was that diverse readers would find that perspective refreshing, and readers who hadn’t come across much of that sort of thing might find their horizons widened, and their stereotypes and assumptions challenged. It’s not the big reveal or the punch line or the plot twist. It’s just people being honest with themselves about who they are and/or who they love.

5) Kara: What was your favorite part about bringing the game to life?

Gabrielle: I love Pathfinder’s take on gnomes, which was why I wanted to feature one in the first place. In Pathfinder, gnomes crave novelty and don’t have many hangups about how they get it. They’re long-lived fae-based creatures so they have an outsider perspective on humanity. I had a great time diving into the gnomish mindset. I’ve come to love Zae’s skewed perspective on the mostly human world around her. She gives me an opportunity to take things to their literal extreme, to question things people don’t question, to think about the names of things, and to approach a fascinating world with the kind of wide-eyed wonder that we all eventually lose when we live in a place and see it every day.

In “Inheritance,” the pre-Gears of Faith short story (linked below), Zae explains: “...it's not just [naïve] curiosity. It's informed curiosity. I know how big and complicated and dangerous the world is. What fascinates me is all that variety—how the world can be so full of parts that are so complex and weird and beautiful, and interconnected. I'm not fascinated by birds in flight because I think flight is mystical and impossible, I'm fascinated because I understand how it works, and how it works is fascinating. That's the kind of wonder I see in the world.”

6) Kara: What's next for Keren and Zae? Will we find out how they met?

Gabrielle: Maybe! They’ve hinted at it, but the whole story might come to light in a future tale. In the meantime, you can check out my short story “Inheritance” (free on Paizo’s website) and see how they acquired Appleslayer, Zae’s brave steed. As for what’s next, I think Keren and Zae are going to stay in Absalom a while, but both of them are at the mercy of their callings. Who knows where they might end up!

7) Kara: What's next for you? Will you be writing more books with Paizo?

Gabrielle: My next project is a contemporary (not fantasy / science fiction) young adult novel called Hearts Are Jerks, which is about a teenage girl and her adventures navigating polyamory. I’m in revisions on this now, and I hope to be sending it around to agents this summer. It’s also an attempt to normalize the diverse, and give voice to people who don’t get to see themselves and their relationships represented in fiction in positive ways. After that, I’ll be writing the sequel to Of the Essence, which is an urban fantasy novel I wrote in Ed Greenwood’s “Hellmaw” shared-world setting. Would I like to write more Keren and Zae? Definitely. And I’m looking forward to seeing what stories inspire me in Paizo’s forthcoming Starfinder setting, as well.

Thank you, Gabrielle, for answering my questions about Gears of Faith! I will definitely be looking out for your YA novel! Also, many thanks to TOR for sending us the book to feature and for offering a giveaway!

Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco + Giveaway

Every so often I read a book that perfectly matches up with the time of year, and this was one of those times.  What could be more perfect than reading a delightfully chilling Jack the Ripper story in October, right before Halloween?  I was hooked on Stalking Jack the Ripper from the moment I received the book.  The back of the cover is minimalist, with a picture of historic autopsy tools and
He murdered women in cold blood.  He terrorized an entire city.  He taunted those of us who hunted him down.  But despite all these horrors, in the end, I could not deny it... I was the girl who loved The Ripper."

Chills, right?  And although the jacket copy refers to Aubrey Rose's love for The Ripper, the book is so much more than that.  It's about a wonderfully fierce and feisty independent young woman and a mystery too!

Aubrey Rose is an excellently well-developed main character.  She is complex and unpredictable.  Stalking Jack the Ripper is set in 1888, so the reader sees her daily struggle between what society expects of her and what she expects of herself.  Rather than going full-tilt rebel, we witness her desire to still befriend her much more feminine cousin and to not overly upset/scandalize her older brother.  I always find that it's a mark of great character development if the character grows or changes any over the course of the book, and Aubrey Rose definitely does.  At the beginning of the book she is a very bright young lady who is good at following her uncle's instructions to complete an autopsy.  By the end of the book, she is very much thinking for herself and making her own decisions both on the streets and in the autopsy room.

Stalking Jack the Ripper also has a secondary character, Thomas Creswell, who is an absolute bonus!  I just loved him to bits!  I'm a huge fan of "snark," and he has "snark" for days!  His demeanor and witticisms had me smiling often through this book.  I found myself especially looking forward to any extended dialog between him and Aubrey Rose- they both gave as well as they got in the sarcastic remarks!

Finally, the mystery- this was a really good mystery.  It kept me guessing straight up to the end... and maybe beyond.  ;)  I'm not giving anything away!  You HAVE to read this one yourself.  Kerri Maniscalco reveals only one clue at a time, with a couple of red herrings, to keep you hooked.  I work in a library and ended up reading the latter part of the book on the reference desk because I couldn't put it down!  Not only will you want to solve the mystery, but you'll also cheer for Aubrey Rose as she works through the clues in the male-dominated Victorian era.

This standalone book left me craving a lot more, so I was very glad to read an author interview in which it was revealed that there will be more standalone Aubrey Rose stories in the future.  Go read Stalking Jack the Ripper now so that you can gush about it with me, and keep your eyes peeled for further adventures!

Forevermore by Kristen Callihan - Release day blitz!

Forevermore-Quote-Graphic-#1

Isolated and alone, Sin Evernight is one of the most powerful supernatural creatures in heaven and on earth. As an angel of vengeance, he hunts down the darkest evil, but when his long-lost friend, Layla Starling, needs him, he vows to become her protector. Even though she will be horrified by the man he has become.

Now a famous singer and the toast of London, Layla believes that Sin is only here to guard her from rabid fans and ardent suitors. However, the truth is far more sinister. Desperate to avoid losing Layla a second time, Sin will face a test of all his powers to defeat an unstoppable foe - and win an eternity with the woman he loves.

The final installment in the Darkest London series is finally here and I don't know if I should be happy I finally got to read it, or sad because it's now over! I'm a huge fan of the series, and I was lucky enough to read Forevermore already, and let me tell you, you wont be disappointed! Kristen really has a talent to articulate her characters and push them on the right path. This couple is no exception and I loved their blooming relationship, but we also discovered and spiderweb of links between the multiple characters that I never suspected! It was such a great read!

To convince you, here's an excerpt!

One might think being an immortal was a blessing, never grow old, never grow sick, never die. At one time in St. John Evernight’s life, he considered it a blessing too. He would be around long after the simple humans who surrounded him were nothing but dust. They could stare all they liked at his “strange” hair and frosty green eyes. They could gossip and speculate about him until they lost their voices. It didn’t matter. He was untouchable, and they were but fragile sacks of blood and bone.

How naive he’d been. Because living forever merely meant a lack of escape from the desolation of regret and loneliness. He knew now that he could walk down Jermyn Street endlessly, see the sands of time shift and rearrange before him, and never be a part of life.
“Brooding, Mr. Evernight?”
Sin almost jumped at the sudden sound of Augustus’s voice by his side. Damn, the blasted man loved to startle him. He gave Augustus a passing glance. Dressed in conservative brown tweed and a bowler hat, the angel appeared every inch the English gentlemen, save for his dark coloring that marked him to be from Southern climes.
“It’s really quite the trick, popping up like a soap bubble whenever you choose, Augustus. You must teach me how one day.”
The man’s mouth twitched. “With your luck, you’d pop up in the middle of a parliamentary session.”
Yes, Sin had abominable luck. Or perhaps it was more a matter of making abominable choices.
“You’re brooding again,” Augustus remarked.
“I’m not brooding. This is simply my face.”
Augustus snorted but remained silent as they walked along, past Trafalgar Square and down Whitehall.
“Care to tell me why you called me here?” Sin asked, when they came upon the grounds of Westminster. For the past year, Sin had been in Rome, soaking in the warmer temperatures, drinking espresso in cafes along the Piazza della Rotunda, under the shade of the ancient Pantheon. He’d eaten simple but delicious food, and listened to the rapid fire of Italian, and felt…well, not peace, but a measure of contentment.

Until Augustus had sent for him. Returning to England sat like a stone in his gut. But he would obey. Augustus was his mentor, and the man who’d given him salvation. The price was a lifetime of servitude. To be fair, his role was for justice, not evil, which was a nice change of pace.

A massive dray rattled past, kicking up dust and sending a fug of stale manure into the air. They hurried past the cloud and headed for Westminster Abbey. Sin hadn’t planned on visiting today, but here they were all the same. He wondered if Augustus somehow had led him to their usual meeting place or if Sin had merely headed that way because of the man’s sudden arrival.
He’d like to think the latter. It did not sit well with him having another control his actions. Not since a certain evil fae had kept Sin as a blood slave for years. Even now, the memory made his stomach turn.

Not a soul acknowledged them as they walked through the abbey and into the cloisters. Here, a rare bit of sunlight peeked through the constant cloud cover and cast lacy shadows along the walkway. The sound of their boot heels clacked out a steady rhythm as they strolled along.
“Layla returns to London tonight.”

At the mention of her name, Sin’s heart stilled within his breast. He’d tried his best to ward off all finer feelings, to remain numb, detached from life. And yet he could not, for the life of him, remain immune to Layla Starling. His childhood friend. The one woman who could take his breath, his reason, simply by laying eyes upon her.
Stuffing his shaking hands into his trouser pockets, Sin forced himself to keep an even tone. “So then I am to begin watching over her?”

God, but he did not want to. It would be agony, staying so close to her and never being allowed to show his true feelings. And yet a thrum of anticipation went through him at the mere prospect of seeing Layla once more.

“Are you ready?” Augustus asked, though his expression told Sin he fully expected an affirmative answer.
So Sin told him the only truth left to him. “I will not fail her.”

Guest Post: Amanda Carlson's Top 5 Forms of Art

Amanda Carlson is releasing her brand now book, STRUCK (a fabulous story about a Valkyrie who had no idea what she was), and to celebrate, I invited over to the blog to share about her favorite forms of art. I hope you welcome her warmly, and stick around there is a giveaway at the end!

Top 5 Favorite Forms of Art

I’ve always been an art aficionado. My father is an architect, and at an early age I found a profound love of art and design. Seeing a house start on paper and end in a structure is amazing. Remodeling is equally as wonderful. Taking something existing and turning it into something beautiful is always a treat. I think of writing that way as well. Writing the story is a beautiful journey, but editing it on the page, and turning it into art is the most satisfying!

Here are my top 5 Forms of Art:

1) Writing is number for me. No one is surprised by this, I’m sure. As I just stated above, there’s nothing like it. I was drawn to writing at a very early age. I wrote stories about kids in class, jotted down my daydreams, my hopes and dreams for the future. As I got older, I would take out my yearbooks and pick faces and create a story based around them. Writing isn’t something I like to do, it’s something I have to do.

2) Photography. Hands down this is my second passion. I received a camera in high school and took photography very seriously. My graphic arts teacher even made a class that didn’t exist for me (Photography 2) so I could continue doing what I loved. By my senior year, I’d won top awards at the MN State Fair. Taking pictures of my kids as they grew became a necessity. Digital photography changed the framework of what I loved, and learning photoshop and being able to edit my work was amazing.

3) Pottery. I found a love of pottery, especially on the wheel, after my first child was born. I took classes to get out of the house, but ended up buying a wheel. It was a lot of upkeep, and hard to clean with three little kids running around, so we eventually sold it. But creating something fluid and alive out of clay will always be near and dear to me.

4) Drawing and painting. I wish I could say I was as gifted as my father in this field, but sadly I’m not. My father is a wonderful artist, not only who creates homes, but art in all forms. As a teenager, I started an art book and filled it with drawings. Later using oil crayons (cray-pas). It didn’t stick with me, but I love going to galleries and taking in the art.

5) Sewing. Some of my favorite forms of art exist in fashion design. When I was first married, we couldn’t afford much. I bought a sewing machine and fairly quickly bought a serger. Over the next few years I made everything from baby blankets, towels, washcloths, sheets, bumper pads, baby quilts, to reupholstering rocking chairs. I got so into it, that my husband and I made it a business for a few years. We enlisted my father to design some kid-friendly designs, my husband (an engineer) made the screen prints, and I sewed, dyed, and made the clothing. We mainly sold them at art fairs. That was a tough way to make a living, but a very fun one! Once I had multiple kids, the work was too much. So I turned to, you guessed it, writing stories about them instead.

I hope you enjoyed reading a little about my passion for arts of all kinds. Thank you so much for having me on the blog today! I hope everyone enjoys STRUCK. It’s a super fun book chock full of action and adventure. Just the way I like it. Oh, and it has a little romance. Because, you know, love.

Thank you so much Amanda! We actually share a lot more than I would've thought ^^

Here are so of Amanda's pictures:

'These are actual photos that inspired me to set the Valkyrie stronghold in New Mexico. So I guess they are apropos! First two are the Grand Canyon, last two are Monument Valley. The one of the "glove" is at sunrise. The last one is an actual cliff dwelling in Mesa Verde National Park called Cliff Palace.'

A little teaser anyone??

I blinked open my eyes to find two concerned faces hovering above me. I shifted my body, and a cascade of shoeboxes tumbled around me. “What happened?” I swallowed a few times. My throat felt funny.

“You tell us,” Sam said, hands on her hips, her blonde curls bouncing in agitation. “I was minding my own business helping a seventy-five-year-old lady cram her corns into a pair of high heels when all of a sudden what sounds like a sonic boom goes off. I run back to find you out cold, crumpled like a rag doll on top of a pile of Steve Maddens.” She extended her arm to help me up. Samantha Reed, my co-worker and recent best friend, was not amused. I grabbed on to her hand, scattering boxes and shoes as I went. “When I saw you lying here, I thought you were dead, Phoebe. Don’t scare me like that again. Ever.”

“Yeah,” Tom echoed in his standard monotone. “Don’t scare us like that.” Tom Levine, Macy’s resident eighteen-year-old stock boy, took a few steps back so I had enough room to fully clear myself of the mess. Apparently, I’d passed out, but I had no recollection of the event at all. “But, dude, at the same time it was freakin’ awesome. I thought the whole building was going to cave in or something. There was this huge kaboom.” Both his hands went out in front of him, mimicking an explosion. The story ended with a whooshing noise out of the side of his mouth. It was the most animated I’d ever seen the guy. “Then the lights flickered and…you were lying here.”

“Honestly,” I said, trying to smooth down my now static-frizzed hair, “I don’t remember much. I heard a noise and glanced up, right as a bolt of something shot out of the lights. It must’ve hit me, which is weird, because I didn’t feel anything and I’m not hurt. Next thing I knew, you guys were looking down on me.”

We all tilted our heads up to the ceiling.

Several long, narrow fluorescent bulbs hung from their fixtures at odd angles, rocking slowly back and forth. It was the only indication that my convoluted story held a kernel of truth.

“No way.” Tom moved under one of the bulbs and tried to reach it, jumping twice, but it was too high. He glanced over his shoulder, flipping his brown hair off his forehead in a single flick. “I wish this kind of stuff happened to me. It’s boring as hell back here.”

“I had no idea fluorescent lights could shock someone like that.” I rubbed my arms. My extremities were a little tingly, but other than that I felt fine. My throat was better after a couple of swallows. “A big store like Macy’s should insulate their lights better or check the circuits or hire better maintenance people.” I gestured to the broken fixtures. “That’s a lawsuit waiting to happen.”

“Please, fluorescent lights can’t shock you like that.” Sam’s voice was full of authority as she marched forward to investigate. “It’s completely impossible. Electricity doesn’t arc that far at one hundred and ten volts, and even if it did, fluorescent lights are made up of electrons and gas, not wire filament. So essentially there’s no way on earth those light bulbs or that fixture”—she directed an angry finger toward the hanging bulbs that still had the audacity to rock back and forth—“shocked you from way up there.”

Sam was an aspiring actress, but she should’ve been an engineer. Her brain was vast and held more factoids than I thought possible for one person. She was one of the smartest people I’d ever met.

A sharp acidic smell hit the air.

I glanced down. The hemline of my skirt was smoking.

“Oh.” I licked my fingers and pressed them against the frayed edge, and a soft psst sounded as the tiny coal of heat was extinguished.

Sam met my eyes, her expression shocked. “Holy crap, Phoebe!” she cried, moving in front of me. “We need to get you to the doctor right away. Your skirt is smoking. How is that even possible?” She twisted her head up toward the ceiling and then back to look at me, her face incredulous.

“Dude, that’s freakin’ crazy.” Tom was giddy as he shuffled toward us. “I’ve never seen anyone on fire before.”

“I’m not on fire,” I answered testily as I checked the rest of my body for any other indication that I may, in fact, be on fire. This was beyond insane. “I’m totally fine. I promise. I have a great idea. Let’s call maintenance, and they can come in and check it out and we can all go back to work. The customers are probably crawling up the walls by now, and Nancy is going to be mad we’ve both been back here so long. I can’t afford to lose my job.”

“I don’t care if Nancy’s pissed or not. She can wait.” Sam placed her hands firmly on her hips. “This is much more important. Phoebe, if your clothes are smoking, that’s a pretty big indication that something calamitous just happened. People don’t just catch on fire. Something could be really wrong with you. I think we need to get you to a hospital, pronto.”

She might be right, except I felt better with each passing second.

In the short amount of time we’d been standing here, my body had become somehow more…energized. Like I’d downed an entire bag of Skittles, and the sugar high was kicking in. My fingers twitched, and my feet almost bounced on their own.

“Sam, I’m fine,” I reassured her. “I feel more awake, but that’s it. I actually feel like I could go for a run right now. Whatever happened, it didn’t hurt me. It worked the opposite.”

Sam wasn’t buying what I was selling. “It’s the middle of winter in New York City, and you hate running. You refer to runners as self-torturers who love inflicting pain on themselves. That alone means we should take you in. You’re not yourself, and this proves it.”

“Well, hm, you might be right about the running part,” I said. “But according to how I feel right now, I might have to alter my definition of self-torture. I could be missing out by not giving it a try.” She crossed her arms. “Seriously, Sam. I’m not lying. I feel amazing. I have no explanation for what happened, but I have no scorch marks on my body, no gaping holes in my chest, and nothing else is smoking. Let’s not make this a big deal, okay? Even though you said the noise was loud, you two seem to be the only ones who heard it. No one else is here.” I glanced at Tom. The kid had four looks: bored, ultra-bored, slightly happy, and confused. He was giving us confused now—the same expression he wore whenever we tried to explain how invoicing worked. I turned back to Sam. “Let’s get back to work. This entire thing is embarrassing, and we’ve been gone so long the customers are going to riot. Please, Sam. I can’t afford to have Nancy fire me. I can barely cover rent as it is.”

Sam rolled her eyes, dropping her arms. “Fine, but I’m keeping an eye on you for the rest of the day. If you so much as sneeze in the wrong direction, I’m calling an ambulance. I mean it, Phoebe. I’m not taking any chances.”

“Deal.”

“Dude, you know”—Tom shoved his hands in his front jean pockets, tugging them down impossibly lower—“when you were lying there, you looked totally dead. I’ve only seen one other dead guy before, but you looked just like him. Kinda freaked me out.”

“Thanks, Tom. That’s really helpful.” Judging by the artful green leaves proudly displayed all over his attire, he was a real poster boy for Sherlock Holmes. Anything could look dead if it wasn’t moving. “I was clearly breathing the entire time, since I’m standing here alive. Fainting can look an awful lot like dead. The subtle difference would be in the chest movement.” I nodded to Sam. “I’ll just clean up these boxes and meet you out on the floor.” Macy’s didn’t mess around with their shoe department in New York. It spanned two floors, and it was always busy.

“Okay,” she relented. “If you’re not out in ten minutes, I’m coming back to find you.”

“Got it.” I was relieved when she finally walked out of the stock room. I wanted to forget this craziness had ever occurred.

Tom bent over to help me as I gathered up the errant shoes. “Dude,” he said, “can I touch your arm? I’ve never touched anyone who’s died before.”

The Selection by Christine Castle and Jayne Faith [Review and Book Tour]

The notion of a selection, where young adults are more or less given away like property, sounds a bit barbaric. We’ve seen it in the Hunger Games, and in another series with the same title as this one by Kiera Cass. All are similar in the sense that the powers that be host a competition. In the Hunger Games, they fight to the death for entertainment with one (supposedly) victor at the end. In Kiera Cass’ series, the winner ends up with prince charming. In this book however, it’s a little of both. The surviving winners ends up in the Lord’s employ while the rest end up…dead. The girl who wins ends up in the Lord’s harem, while the winning boy ends up as a servant for that same lord.

Although it feels as if this story has been told multiple times, I enjoyed this version very much. Not only is it sci-fi, but it does have a magical feel to it, with the prophesies and mystical themes.  I loved the idea of a race humans that abandoned Earth long ago that are now back to reclaim the planet, now called Earthenfell, while fighting an alien race. It took me while to understand the whole concept and the world the characters lived in but I loved how the writers slowly incorporated the necessary details as the story progressed. I thought it was very well written although I wish it could have been even more detailed.

Usually, I dislike female leads that are naive and fragile, but in Maya’s case, I think it was necessary. Her whole life she thought she would be safe from the selection since her community had preselected a girl that would be trained and prepared for the competition, to be the Obligate of Maya’s clan when the time came. However, because this preselected girl dies right before the bi-annual ceremony that would announce her as the next Obligate in the deadly game, Maya is randomly selected instead. Maya has no clue what the selection really entails. As she mourns her fate with her family and friends during her last night on Earthenfell, I believe she comes to terms with her possible fate. “An Obligate entering the competition with no training was walking into almost certain death (loc 215).” However, once in the competition, Maya proves to everyone that she might just have what it takes in order to survive the physical and mind games they are putting her through.

When we first learn of Lord Toric through Maya’s point of view, he’s made out to be an evil and sadistic leader. However, the more we learn, the more we see the humanity in him. He has a dark past which has forged him into the man he is, and we slowly realize that he’s not the real enemy. Actually, he singles out Maya the first time he sees her and she becomes his obvious favourite. I love the rapport they build. It’s simple and modest, and Toric does his best not the intimidate the shy and innocent Maya.

One of my critics would be the length of the book. Not only does the story finish on a cliffhanger,  but I find the book was too short. It’s almost as if the writers purposely cut the story in order to make it fit into a trilogy. The ending makes you want more so if their goal was to leave me wanting more, they certainly achieved it in the most evil of ways. I definitely plan on reading the next book, however the release date has yet to be announced.

ABOUT THE NOVELLAS

IN TIME

Gabe's life has been devastated in the wake of the economic crash. The only option left for someone like him to escape his tragic past is to leave his small town behind and to attempt to become a skiptracer. This already almost-impossible task is made all the more difficult by his first "score,"a young girl who won't speak, but who changes his life in ways he could never imagine.

SPARKS RISE

Sam didn't think things could get worse at Thurmand rehabilitation camp. Then the Reds arrive. Everyone assumed the kids with firepower had been killed years ago. Instead they were taken away, brainwashed, and returned as terrifyingly effective guards. To her horror, Sam recognizes one of them: Lucas, the one spark of light in Sam's dark childhood.

Lucas has a deadly secret--he beat the brutal training that turned his fellow Reds into mindless drones. When Sam defends herself against an attack by a vile PSF guard and faces a harrowing punishment, Lucas must risk everything to save her.

BEYOND THE NIGHT

The government-run "rehabilitation camps" have been shut down, but kids with Psi powers are anything but free. Sam would rather be on her own than put in the care of a foster family and given the "cure"--a dangerous procedure that unclaimed kids across the country are being forced to undergo. But there's more at stake than just her own safety. Sam once made someone a promise, and the time has come to fulfill it.

Now that she's out of her camp, Mia only has one thought in her head: finding Lucas, her beloved older brother. She hasn't seen him since they were separated and taken to different camps years ago, before Mia even became Psi. When Sam, Lucas's childhood best friend, rescues Mia from the government's inept care, Mia learns that nothing is as simple as she thought--and the past that she's so desperate to salvage may not be possible to recover...

Her Sinful Angel Blog Tour: Her Dark Angel Review + Giveaway

Honestly, as far as free e-books go, this one is good and steamy! I enjoyed it so much, I immediately purchased the next book of the series. I usually don't like novella length stories because I feel like I get cheated from long character development and back story. In this case, I simply went along for the ride and enjoyed the good paranormal romance that it is.

The hero and dark angel of this story is Apollyon and he is summoned by a witch in modern Paris. This witch, Serenity, inadvertently calls Apollyon to help her get her revenge on her ex, Edward , who cheated on her and broke her heart. Serenity's mother always told her to beware of angels, especially this one who is also known as Abaddon, the Great Destroyer. So when she first sees Apollyon, with his strong armor and majestic wings, she more or less freaks. Eventually, they gain each other's trust and begin to plan Serenity's revenge.

All Serenity wanted was to make Edward jealous. She never planned to fall for her guardian angel, although, with his incredible physique, it's kind of hard not too be attracted. More than lust develops between the two, but Serenity doubts strongly a future with Apollyon is possible, so she hides her true feelings. I loved the interactions between the two main characters. I wish we could have had more development and action, and as a whole, I was a little disappointed with the climax of the story (no pun intended). Actually, there's a lot of romance/love scenes in this story, quite a bit for a book this length. And they're very steamy! They're also very detailed but written in a classy way.

Overall,  I thought Her Dark Angel was a really good paranormal romance short, and I can't wait to meet more angels in the rest of the series. It's ebooks like these that allow you to simply get lost in a good romance with lovable characters. Her Dark Angel was a quick and easy read that was enjoyable despite its short length.

Spider's Trap Blog Tour: Review + giveaway

Spider's Trap Tour Banner

A quick warning: Spoilers for previous novels abound in this review! If you're not caught up, you might want to skip down to the giveaway. :)

Gin's in a very different position in SPIDER'S TRAP: she's spent much of the series hunting Monroes and dodging assassins and now she's the queen of Ashland's underworld. "Reluctant" doesn't even begin to describe how she feels about it but her feelings become moot when someone plants a bomb on her friend Phillip's boat while she's on board for a meeting. The would-be assassin's magic is unlike anything Gin has ever faced, and she can help but think it's related to her past, though she can't quite put her finger on it. Nonetheless, Gin being Gin, she goes into full seek-and-destroy mode, to ensure the safety of her loved ones.

The books in the Elemental Assassin have a definite structure to them: Gin meets threat, Gin spends novel trying to defeat threat (usually with at least one attempt that goes awry - at great cost to her person), Gin survives (again, often at great cost to her person). Within this structure, there's usually a lot of nice personal and thoughtful moments, particularly in the past couple novels, where Gin has struggled with being "out" as The Spider and how that affects the people she cares about. In SPIDER'S TRAP, Gin's reflections go in a different direction, taking us back to her early days with Fletcher, which is one of the reasons I really enjoyed this novel. Every few books, we get to dip our toes into Gin's early days -- you can't quite call it an idyllic childhood, can you? -- and these are my favourite stories because we see how Gin became the woman she is. And we get to learn about Fletcher, who I'm very attached to despite the fact that he's been dead for pretty much the entire series. Gin's formative years and her time with Fletcher are always fascinating and SPIDER'S TRAP is no exception. Estep has given us another peek at Gin's younger self, and of Fletcher in his prime, and I loved it. (As an aside, I would happily read a prequel series just about Fletcher with or without teenaged Gin and Flynn.) Without going too far into spoiler territory, I think I can safely say that it was quite fun to have Gin be something of a secondary player in some of the reminiscences. I'm afraid to be less cryptic, so you'll just have to read through the novel to really get what I mean by that!

I have such big love for SPIDER'S TRAP that I could go on and on but I'm very concerned that I'll inadvertently ruin some of the surprises so I think I'll have to sign off now. ;) I'll close by saying that, as ever, Estep has written a fast-paced, action-filled novel that also manages to deliver great character development and pithy dialogue. It's no mean feat to keep a series interesting once it's hit double digits but she's done a fine job. I'm always eager to read the next Elemental Assassin book and SPIDER'S TRAP has truly delivered. It's exciting, satisfying, and will have you hooked from the opening scene. I dare you to read the excerpt linked below and not run to the bookstore to get your own copy!

Waking the Dragon tour: Guest post by Juliette Cross + giveaway

Waking the Dragon Banner 851 x 315

Today we have a guest post from Juliette Cross, author of WAKING THE DRAGON.

---------------------

Hold Your Heads High, Romance Lovers

I know many romance readers who receive frowns or snickers when non-romance readers catch a glimpse at what book they’re holding in their hands. I also know many romance writers who are viewed as the red-headed stepchild of the fiction writing world. (No offense to redheads. I happen to be one.) So, what is it about romance that makes us so addicted to these worlds, no matter how many ugly looks we get from haters? Do we long to travel back in time and be courted by the dashing rake when we read historicals? Do we seek an escape that offers hope and inspiration as in contemporary romance? Do we choose a tome to fulfill unquenched or longed-for desires when we read erotica? Or perhaps, we have a darker motive. Do we yearn for a cathartic purging of our own blacker emotions via fantasy, such as the vengeful death of a ghastly villain by a dark hero as we see in paranormal and fantasy romance? The answer could be one or all of these reasons.

From the moment I read JANE EYRE when I was sixteen, I’ve been drawn to the Gothic romance. I’m lured by the dark hero, the strong-willed heroine, the misty, moonlit settings, the good versus evil plotlines where a vicious villain threatens to tear my MC’s world asunder. Above all, I yearn for good to prevail, for the hero to save his girl, and for her to save him right back. I suppose this says a lot about me as a reader and as a person. I yearn for the romances woven with haunting settings and dark characters with secrets to hide who eventually get their happily ever after. I suppose this is why I write the same types of stories myself.

Romance novels take us to that faraway place where adventure, passion, and love triumph in the end. And while the real world still contains all these things, the mundane chores of everyday life (paying bills, changing diapers, cooking dinner, washing dishes, etc.) can often drag us down. Romance lovers know that an instant vacation to escape all of this is just a mind-trip away. All we need do is pick up a good romance book and let the author carry us to a new world where a hero promises to sweep us off our feet. So cheers to romance lovers! Hold your heads high, ladies. There are many more of us than you know. ;)

"When I'm not writing" with Dianne Duvall + giveaway!

Badge_OFFICIALToday we have a guest post from Dianne Duvall, as part of her tour for her new book, A SORCERESS OF HIS OWN. I love her Immortal Guardians series but now she's out with something new, a self-published novel. I think you'll really enjoy discovering exactly what she does when she's not crafting her next novel!

WINW

When I’m not writing, I’m often thinking about writing, either going over the scene I wrote the day before or mentally writing the next one. I know it sounds weird, but sometimes I even mentally write scenes that I know will never find their way into my books. When you create the characters in a series and live with them for years, you tend to get to know them so well that it’s hard not to imagine them in this or that situation, even if it has absolutely nothing to do with the series arc.

When I’m not actually immersing myself in the world of Immortal Guardians and Gifted Ones, I’m often still doing writing related activities. Chatting with other readers and writers on social media sites. (Love to do that!) Blogging. Updating my website. (I’m not that great at HTML, but always seem to muddle my way through it.) Designing teaser images to share with readers. Or doing research. I’ve had to research some of the most peculiar subjects for my books. I know some writers dislike that portion of their vocation, but I actually enjoy it. I’m always curious to see what I’m going to have to look up next.

When I’m not writing, I also work in the local independent film industry, which is another fun creative outlet for me. I’ve worked all three stages of production in a variety of projects that ranged from drama to horror to romantic comedy. And, yes, I was still thinking about writing while doing it. LOL.

In pre-production, I have served as Script Editor, Assistant Casting Director, and Shooting Scheduler. Those are pretty self-explanatory. I edit scripts. I organize casting calls, rehearsals, and table readings. I also create shooting schedules, which is actually trickier than it sounds because films are shot out of sequence.

During production, I’ve worked as the special effects make-up artist, sometimes providing what I call blood and guts make-up. This is always fun, because the actors and crew get such a kick out of it. I have also provided other special effects, like “candy glass” car windows that can safely be shattered without harming the actor. I have also served as Script Supervisor. The Script Supervisor ensures continuity. So, if an actor scuffs her shoe in Scene 23, the Script Supervisor ensures that the actor’s shoe is scuffed in all subsequent scenes. That, too, is more difficult than is sounds, since—as I mentioned—films are shot out of sequence.

Post-production is the stage that allows me the most freedom to be creative, so I tend to enjoy it the most. In post-production, I edit films, add special effects, create unique title sequences, design movie posters, and fashion DVD menus and covers.

All of this film work, of course, came in handy when the time finally came to shoot trailers for my books. (So exciting!) It can also be quite time-consuming, though, and have very hectic schedules. So writing and filmmaking combined doesn’t leave me much in the way of downtime. I’d like to say I spend quite a bit of time reading. I’ve always been a voracious reader. But now I tend to get my fiction fix by listening to audiobooks while I do all of the things around the house that I sometimes neglect while writing: folding laundry, washing dishes, trying to solve the age-old socks vanishing in the dryer mystery. This year I’ve decided to make time for some gardening, but am not off to a stellar start. I’ve already neglected my little seedlings shamefully while working to meet my latest deadlines.

And, of course, I spend as much time as I can with family and friends, who—fortunately—don’t mind when my mind once more wanders away from the movie or TV show I’m supposed to be watching or the game I’m supposed to be playing and begins fashioning the next scene in my latest work in progress.

Did I mention that when I’m not writing, I’m often thinking about it? :)

"When I'm not writing" with Jan DeLima + giveaway!

Today we have an extremely awesome author visiting us: Jan DeLima. I'm a huge fan of her Celtic Wolves series and I'm waiting with bated breath for the next book in the series, AUTUMN MOON, coming out in September. There's a lovely giveaway as part of the tour so make sure you read all the way down.

Welcome, Jan!

WINW

My hobbies outside of writing are very homey and comforting, and may give the impression that I write inspirational or cozy novels—which I do not.  My series is paranormal with graphic elements, but at home I’m just a wife and mom. Family is the biggest part of my life outside of writing.  If I had to choose one hobby, gardening is at the top of my list.  Cooking is a close second.  I’m an artist as well, but that muse is finicky and doesn’t come to me often.

In the spring in summer months, if I’m not in my office writing, or spending time with my family, I’m either cooking, or in the garden.  After a long day at the computer, I’ll pour a glass of wine, turn on some soulful music, and walk around the flower and herb beds and let the characters in my head calm for the night.  This is my wind-down time.  I have an outdoor stereo system, and my family and neighbors have heard my playlist more than they probably care to.  (My kids hid the Matchbox Twenty and Joss Stone CD’s on me, but then I subscribed to a popular music service and have an endless supply of all my favorite songs.)

I do love to share, so I’ve included the playlist below, along with a tour of my garden, and a family recipe for blueberry muffins.

Enjoy,
Jan

WELCOME TO MY GARDEN

This is me standing next to Brynmor Cottage, home of Ms. Hafwen.
Ms. Hafwen is a character in my books, introduced at the very end of Summer Moon. If you haven’t guessed, she’s a pixie, and I couldn’t resist building her cottage in my garden.

JanDeLima_Garden2July is my favorite month in the garden. It’s when most of my climbers bloom along the fence.

JanDeLima_Garden3The gatekeeper guarding her post. This is Willow, my youngest English bulldog, standing under the Nesting Arbor.  Every year a robin makes a nest in the tangled vines around the arbor, even though it’s our most traveled gateway into the vegetable garden beyond. It’s beautiful when the wisteria is in bloom.

JanDeLima_Garden4Lobelia baskets add color to the shady parts of my garden, plus it’s a great place to hang the hummingbird feeders.

JanDeLima_Garden5Boil some sugar and water to fill the feeders for the hummingbirds.  Four parts water and one part pure cane sugar is a safe portion.  It’s tempting to add a bit more sugar to the mix, but it only forces the birds to look for water.

BUTTERMILK BLUEBERRY MUFFIN RECIPE

This is an old recipe that has been handed down in my family.  The secret to these muffins is to make sure all the ingredients are room temperature, as if the eggs were just gathered from under the hen, and the blueberries were just picked from warm summer fields. Also, and just as important, the wet and dry ingredients are barely stirred.  There should be lumps in the mix.

Ingredients:

- 2 cups of all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon of baking powder
- ½ teaspoon of baking soda
- ½ teaspoon of salt
- 2 eggs
- 1 cup of buttermilk
- 1/3 cup of sugar
- 1/3 cup of packed light brown sugar
- 5 tablespoons of melted butter
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla
- A pinch of cinnamon (1/8 of a teaspoon if you need to measure, no more or the spice will overwhelm. You can dip the tip of your 1/4th teaspoon if you don’t have a 1/8th.)
- a pinch of nutmeg
- 1 ½ to 2 cups of blueberries

Heat oven to 400 degrees and prep a muffin tin with wrappers. You can grease the tin but the papers are pretty and, more important, the tin is easier to wash afterward.  Whisk together all dry ingredients in a bowl except for the sugar.  In a separate bowl, whisk the wet ingredients along with the sugar.  Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour the wet items into the well.  Mix only until the dry ingredients are barely moistened.  Ten turns of the spoon, if that.  There should be lumps in the mix.  Gently fold in the blueberries.   Bake for fifteen minutes, but start checking around ten by inserting a toothpick in the center.  They’re ready when the sides are golden brown and the toothpick comes out clean.

Makes 12 muffins

Dylan Black has been hunting for Sophie since the night she ran from him----an obsession he cannot afford in the midst of an impending war.  Dylan controls Rhuddin Village, an isolated town in Maine where he lives with an ancient Celtic tribe.  One of the few of his clan who can still shift into a wolf, he must protect his people from the Guardians, vicious warriors who seek to destroy them.

When Sophie and Dylan come together for the sake of their son, their reunion reignites the fierce passion they once shared.  For the first time in years, Dylan's lost family is within his grasp.  But will he lose them all over again? Are Joshua and Sophie strong enough to fight alongside Dylan in battle? Nothing less than the fate of his tribe depends on it...
